Re: Help in Geraldton. Snow Leopard DVD

I can loan you a mini or an imac and/or a firwire drive. I'm in Dongara but
happy to drive up to Gero for a change of scenery.

Seagate 1TB

Hi all, I see Betta Electrical have a 1TB Seagate drive for $189, no
details given in catalogue but presumably USB only. Seems like a
good deal though - any views?

Re: Mail message won't go away

Hah, yes indeed it does Ronni. Cut makes it disappear without a
fuss. Quit mail and reopened to make sure it has stayed away and it
has,

I suppose we'll never know why it wouldn't delete,

Cheers,

Graham

Hi Graham,

Can you highlight the email, then click on Edit and choose Cut.

Does it go away then?

Re: Problem with WD My Book drive

2009-04-01 Thread Graham Byatt
My USB 1TB one, blew the power supply and then did the same to a
replacement power supply (within 30secs). I'm wondering if this is
likely to be a fixable thing because can't find receipt and don't know
how much stuff is on there that i no longer have elsewhere.

Dear WAMUG'ers,

Has anyone experienced problems with the Western Digital My Book-Home
Edition 750GB with 3 interfaces: FW400, USB eSATA?

I bought one a few weeks ago and experienced problems with formatting
the disk. I eventually managed to format it as a Mac drive and was
able to transfer some data on to it. However during heavy usage, using
GraphicConverter to convert fairly large amount of photos from jpg to
tiff, the drive would suddenly disappear from the desktop. System
Profiler was not even able to see the drive, or on odd occasion would
see the drive but reported the origin as 'unknown'.

Disk Utility would not see the drive once it disappeared.

I eventually returned the drive and was given a new replacement. I
followed WD instructions in updating the firmware for OS 10.5.x,
formatted the disk and have been working with it for 2 weeks until the
same problem occurred. The only way I am able to remount the disk is
to pull the FW connector, wait a couple of minutes and plugging it
back. I did encounter the problem with the initial drive on both FW
and USB.

I run a G5 1.8Ghz dual, OS 10.5.6 with 2.5GB RAM.

Will I have to return this drive back??

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards and good night to all,

Monitor/TV query

2008-07-29 Thread Graham Byatt

Hi All,

I'm wanting to ditch the old TV and move to a more computer-centred
home audio/video experience. Either, simply buy a moderate size
Monitor that can connect to my laptop (G4 Al. 17) and also accept AV
input from Video Recorder - (for TV). Or perhaps buy a mac mini to
use as dedicated audio/visual unit and connect to monitor as above.
Or move into the Digital TV era, with either powerbook or new mac mini
and some kind of eyeTV device?.

I assume others have recently been down these various paths and would
appreciate any advice that they may have.

I'm in the geraldton area, get really good TV reception on all
available channels with existing on-roof ariel - if this is relevant
for digital reception

Cheers,

Graham

HD Failure Powerbook

2007-09-07 Thread Graham Byatt

Hi all,

The HD (Hitachi IC25N080ATMR04-0) has died in my : PowerBook G4 17;
model 5,3; CPU G4 (1.1), 1.33GHz, Tiger 10.4.10

Any views on a good replacement, I don't mind paying more for better/
quieter/cooler/etc.

The instructions for replacement seem fairly straightforward but I'd
appreciate any opinions/advice on doing this myself (I put more RAM
in, but that's the limit of my experience - well actually i'm a
qualified telecommunications technician, but that was a long time
ago, phones had dials and exchanges had big, clunky, noisy stepping
relays. I gather things have changed a bit)

I'm in the Geraldton area, but travel to Perth fairly frequently.

Also, is there any freeware/shareware data recovery software around
(of course i made backups, but .. . ). Couldn't find any on
VersionTracker.

Cheers,

Graham

New imac advice wanted

2007-08-27 Thread Graham Byatt

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a new desktop machine to complement my G4
powerbook.

I'm thinking 20 imac, 2.4GHz, and have a couple of questions

1. Should I wait for Leopard?

2. Most seem to come with ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO but winthrop shop
at UWA advertise Radeon X1600 Graphics card (with NVIDIA GeForce
7300GT in the 24}. Which is better? Does it matter? I'm not a big
game player or video editor at the moment but I don't want to limit
the options.

Are there any other options I should consider? I would want 2GB RAM
but otherwise 'as advertised' seems fine.

3. There seems to be a bit more price variability than there used to
be in the apple world? Are there any special deals around at the
moment?

In terms of price i've seen:

 $2,149: 20, 2.4GHz, 1GB, 320GB, Radeon HD 2600 PRO: @
nextbyte, stirling highway
$2,069.10 20, 2.16GHz, 1GB, 250GB, Radeon X1600 : @ UWA
Campus (edu price, RRP is $2,299, they say)

Seems that it's not much of edu discount for a lesser machine. I
also saw some at Myer in Perth, just as they were closing on Sunday -
they seemed fairly cheap but I had no time - and now I'm back in
Dongara for a few weeks.

Thanks for all and any comments,

Graham

internet banking concern

2007-02-26 Thread Graham Byatt

Hi All,

While in the process of transfering funds from a NAB account using
safari, the name and bsb details changed to those of someone i do not
know and have not previously paid any money to. Is it possible for
someone to hijack auto form complete or some such? It gave me a
fright and i cancelled and logged out immediately.

Using safari, 10.48, G4 Powerbook,

I've also been having some slow down issues lately,
