Re: re telstra

2009-05-06 Thread Jennifer and Dick Lefroy
We have been with Highway1 as our server for years. They are very
good with support (our knowledge as well as our needs are pretty
basic) and I think I can only remember a couple of occasions when
they were down. They even advised us when they thought we were on a
plan which was more expensive than we required.

Since changing to a Mac , I have found that they have people who
specialise in Macs.

Hello Everyone,

We transfer files between a Dell with Microsoft Windows XP and our Mac
OS X 10.5.6 using a Toshiba Memory Stick without any problems. I
think we were too ignorant to envisage any need for formatting or
possible incompatibility!

The one time you would need to format as Mac is if you were using
the Memory stick

on a Macintosh running an OS prior to OSX

Because OSX first became available in about 1999 there is not much
use for OS9 now .

Gmail and hotmail

2009-04-04 Thread Jennifer and Dick Lefroy

Good Morning,

I have now downloaded Safari 4 to our Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Thank you,
Ronni, Miss Cloe and others). I can access my own email. However,
visitors using hotmail and gmail can open them, but not access the
emails - the latter won't highlight.

Is there a step I have missed out, or can you help in some way?

Many thanks,
Jennifer

Thank you, Ronnie, for the usual magic.

That seems to have done the trick for hot mail and will check gmail
when the user gets back from a swim - a Brit basking in the warmth
while he can.

Fitz tells Miss Cloe that he, too, is outside basking. He hasn't yet
explained which is his workday and is awed at the thought of two
computer rooms!

Hello Jennifer (Miss Cloe says hello also),

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, I sent this fix to Maureen re
her daughter's hotmail account and it worked.

In Safari 4 Beta:
Go to Preferences Advanced - and checked Show Develop Menu in
Menu Bar
Then gone to the Menu Bar and clicked on Develop User Agent and
then choose the latest version of firefox,

that should fix the problem.
I know it does for Hotmail.

Let us know how you get on please.

Cheers,
Ronni (Miss Cloe is having a nap in my other computer room, not
helping me this morning ... it's Sunday her day off)

Safari 4

2009-03-24 Thread Jennifer and Dick Lefroy

Good Morning,

I have a Mac OS X 10.5.6. I am not sure if I should download Safari 4
and if I do would it import my bookmarks? Are there
contraindications for someone who has only very basic knowledge? I
suspect Miss Cloe could teach me a thing or two!

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Thank you all very much for the advice and you, Ronnie, for the extra

Apple security updates.

Fitz, our cat, was particularly thrilled to have email from Miss Cloe

Hello Jennifer,

Are you currently using Safari 3? If so, make sure all security
updates etc are installed, then download Safari 4

http://www.apple.com/safari/what-is.html

The downloaded disk image of Safari 4 includes an uninstaller. Keep
a copy of this in a safe place.

If it turns out you don't like Safari 4, the uninstaller will
automatically revert you to your previous version of Safari.

All your settings, bookmarks etc will be preserved.

Cheers,
Ronni Miss Cloe

Hi Bob,

First off, whatever approach you try, if you have an up-to -the -
minute
back-up then losing the wife's folders and files shouldn't be a
worry. If

you haven't then I'd be looking at doing that as a first priority.

Assuming you have another Mac to hand (yours?) and a firewire
cable, boot

the Emac in target mode and clone it's drive to somewhere, eg:
- spare external drive (ideal)
- disk image on an external drive (with enough space)
- disk image on your machine (again with enough space)

Now, I'd feel safe to address the problem.

As Bob says, sometimes the stand-alone Combo update often works
best for
updating - and the fact that you used Auto update doesn't stop you
running
the Combo update over the top of this - and you shouldn't lose any
info.

Since the problem only appeared after the auto update, it seems
highly
likely (though not certain) that this is the root of your problem
and so
running the Combo updater over the top may be all that's needed to
fix it.

Under your Apple drop down menu do an about this Mac to
see what version you are running .

Depending on your hardware you may do better by not going to the
latest version .

Some people are still running Panther ( 10.3.x ) or

Tiger ( 10.4.x )

I have remained at 10.5.2 and I always keep the Apple software
update turned off .

I don't know how you tell whether a combo update has been run , but
it will not hurt to run it again

if you feel it might help .
