2002-07-17 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
We are overstocked on 40GB 7200RPM Barracuda hard drives so these are

once stock has run down so if you are thinking about a new internal
drive or extra storage now is the time to act -

special open -

Our $89 64MB and $149 128MB USB pen drives are back in stock. Remember
these are totally cross platform plug'n'play but if you want faster
transfer times in OS X and don't need the cross platform functionality,
simply reformat the pen drive as a Mac volume in Apple Disk Utility.
Next month we will be releasing pen drives in capacities up to 1GB.
http://www.zytech.com.au/usb/pen/index.html

And the latest in the RAM market some commentary -

China's latest back-to-school purchasing wave has stirred the
long-slumbering PC market. Demand for the for the newest models have
caused DDR (double data rate) module demand in China's clone market to
skyrocket. In a time when channel stocks have been very thin, the China
demand has sent prices soaring.

To worsen the issue most major fabs are having yield or supply line
issues bringing their lines from SDRAM onto DDR so prices seem set to
rise even further over July.

Key issues include;

· China back to school demand sends DDR prices soaring. · SDRAM prices
expected to follow DDR trend. · FABS struggling to meet DDR demand

After a period of general stability or reduction, SDRAM prices are
headed north sucked along by DDR and in response to reduced production
capacity as fabs move to DDR.

---

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. June 24, 2002 Seagate today launched the
Barracuda ATA V disc drive, introducing the most advanced data-density
ever: it's the first hard drive to achieve 120 Gbytes using only two
discs, giving Seagate a significant technology advantage in
high-performance PC storage.

Barracuda ATA V will also offer a native Serial ATA interface a faster,
simpler, more intelligent technology designed to replace today's
Parallel ATA hard drive interface. Barracuda ATA V will begin shipping
next month with the Ultra ATA/100 interface; the native Serial ATA
option will be available this fall.    Barracuda ATA V builds on the
proven technology of its extremely successful and reliable predecessor,
Barracuda ATA IV today's leading 7,200-rpm product. Virtually any PC
application will benefit from the increased performance offered by
7,200-rpm disc drives.

Mainstream applications see performance boosts of as much as 44
percent, PCs boot faster and load applications faster, and users
perform everyday tasks faster. Barracuda ATA V has the world's fastest
PC hard drive internal transfer rate at up to 570 Mbits per second, and
a 9-msec seek time. The Ultra ATA/100 version features a 2-Mbyte cache,
and the Serial ATA version will sport an 8-Mbyte cache, the largest on
any PC hard drive.

Seagate's patented SoftSonic Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor
makes the fast 7,200-rpm Barracuda ATA V almost too quiet to hear,
using the same technology that made Barracuda ATA IV the first
virtually silent PC drive. Seagate invented the FDB motor for hard
drives and has shipped more than all other drive makers combined. And
with Seagate's exclusive 3D Defense System, Barracuda ATA V offers the
best combination of performance, quiet operation and ruggedness.

In the fall, Barracuda ATA V will feature native Serial ATA technology.
Seagate's native technology enables Serial ATA's full
150-Mbytes-per-second transfer speed and adds no excess components or
slow overhead to reduce performance. By contrast, Serial ATA bridge
architectures must translate Parallel data streams into Serial data
streams and back again and may be limited by the speed of the Parallel
ATA controller on the drive.

In addition to fast 150-Mbyte-per-second data transfers, the new Serial
ATA interface offer features that improve design capabilities for PC
makers: intelligent data handling, hot plug capability, a
point-to-point connection from the drive to the host without the need
for master/slave jumper settings, and thinner, longer cables with
snap-in connectors that simplify installation, improve overall system
dynamics and enable innovative small form-factor designs.

Serial ATA will provide easier and better connectivity, much greater
system expandability, and better data reliability with 32-bit Cyclic
Redundancy Checking protection on command data as well as data on the
bus. Its speed, intelligence and simplicity will enable a future of
data-intensive and entertainment-heavy content delivered via PCs, home
network hubs and Consumer Electronics devices.

[CommPost:] 60GB FireWire $359

2002-06-03 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
This week we're offering probably the best special of the year -

$359 60GB Pyro external FireWire drive with Seagate Barracuda IV and
Oxford 911 bridge.

This special is exclusive to our mail/news list and is available until
Friday 7 June (or until we sell out) ... no accounts, no rainchecks ...
sorry it's first in on this one!

This product is not on our website so if you'd like to order please
just respond to this offer by return email.

... and while we're at it some brief background on FireWire and
USB 2.0.

USB 2.0 uptake has been very slow although there is a spate of new
products coming out of Taiwan and some PC's are now coming through with
USB 2.0 on the board. Obviously Intel (and no doubt Microsoft) will be
pushing it hard over the next several months and there will be a large
number of people that blindly follow.

However, they are going to need to confront FireWire on 2 fronts.

Firstly, the acceptance of FireWire (or IEEE 1394) as a high-speed data
bus is now almost complete. Certainly the standard has existed on Apple
product for several years but most importantly the momentum for its
wide acceptance in the PC market is now dangerously close for
Intel/Microsoft.

This week Computex is being held in Taipei. I've been
to Computex before and trying to find Mac product there is almost
impossible. However, this year will be different as there will be an
entire FireWire hall!

Quite simply the Taiwanese producers, who are
essentially the people who make or break potential products or
standards for the PC industry have embraced FireWire absolutely
and of course the whole standard is further supported by Sony's
commitment to FireWire ... they just haven't got around to getting the
name right (and even this one day may change, especially as the 1394
Trade Association has just officially adopted both the FireWire name
and logo in a no-fee licencing deal with Apple.)

Market research firm In-Stat/MDR predicts that FireWire will be
included on more than 64 million personal computers and nearly 100
million digital devices by the end of this year. - MacCentral

Even with flash card technology, if you use a FireWire card
reader/writer you can partition the card (or 1GB IBM Microdrive) just
as you would a normal hard drive and even boot your computer from the
flash card.

Secondly, as Intel try to popularise USB 2.0 as a direct competitor to
FireWire, they will be battling not just FireWire but FireWire B which
pretty much doubles the throughput of both FireWire A and USB 2.0. So
they'll be trying to push a new high-speed standard whose direct
competitor is twice as fast . it will be interesting to see the
spin they use for this one.

If you thought FireWire B was a long way off, think again.

This month Macpower, who build our FireCube/IceCube and FireStar
enclosures are releasing FireWire B enclosures - Macpower's new line
of SuperWire(TM) enclosure products will combine the raw firepower of
800Mbps 1394B FireWire and 480Mbps USB2.0 to provide the ultimate
high-speed data streaming solution for the next generation external
data storage products. The new Oxford UF922 chip is based on their
wildly successful OXFW911 - the 1394 bridge chip integrated into more
than half of all external storage devices. The 922 is optimized for
asynchronous application and is the ideal choice for PC or MAC external
storage solution.

With FireWire B product coming to market this month, how long will it
be before we see FireWire B on a Mac? Is there anyone at Apple
listening who might like to let us in on a secret? Certainly you can
bet if FireWire B peripherals are now coming out of Taiwan, FireWire B
PCI cards, cardbus adapters, etc, etc are very close behind.

It is interesting though with the 922 chipset, Oxford are hedging their
bets on FireWire B vs USB 2.0.

The greatest problem now for FireWire is acceptance from the major hard
drive companies. Sony and Yamaha have already announced plans for
native FireWire CD-ROM drives but until the likes of Seagate and IBM
join the fray, we are stuck with using 7200 RPM drives. It's ironic
that only a few years ago, it was the Mac platform that was the
dominant users of SCSI drives. I know personally SCSI product was held
back in development by Seagate as they couldn't see its application
beyond the Mac market. Now that Apple has effectively dropped SCSI, it
has become the standard for the high-end PC market with drives spinning
at up to 15000 RPM.

.. and the FireWire proponents have yet to convince Seagate, etc that
these high-end drives should be developed as native FireWire
interfaces. So there's still the opportunity for faster data storage
ahead using existing technology. With the possibility of super-fast
native FireWire hard drives and a likely spread of FireWire also as a
high-speed networking standard (which is another story entirely) we can
expect not only the growth of the FireWire standard but some great new
high performance products. Watch this

And a memory update -

It is contract negoitiation time and everyone has already seen the
sudden price increase of 48% that happened on Monday 13th May. A major
earthquake in Taiwan has caused significant fab damage and prices are
expected to spike during  buying day of thursday 16 May.

How far will this price spike raise price and is this that start of
another major series of prices rises? Remember it is Q2 which is the
traditional down season worldwide for the PC market. But any way you
look at it prices are up and will continue to rise over at least week
20 and week 21.

In particular it is likely that there will be a shortage of SDRAM parts
relative to DDR availability over the balance of this Q as more fabs
convert SD lines to DDR while crossover of motherboard sales still lag.

Key issues include -

· Contract price to world major PC makers in being set this week.
· Earthquake hit Taiwan fabs
· SDRAM Shortage likely
· Channel stock very low causing very sudden price reactions
· DRAM market expected to leap 78% in second half 2002

SDRAM  - UP   Fabs stop supply, raise prices prior contract
negotiations. Earthquake causes price spike. Very low channel stocks
have created a hyper reative market (monday morning prices dropping
10%, monday afteroon prices rise 48%!) Likely shortage of SD as DDR
takeup in market still lags.

these units are in stock, ready to ship.

There is a possibility that we have seem RAM pricing finally hit its
peak. More about this next week however, don't expect a rapid fall
in pricing anywhere soon. Our info last week about the component cost
of RAM to manufacturers has been borne out with Apple's US$100 price

[CommPost:] 10% off card readers

2002-03-18 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
This week our exclusive mail list special is 10% off the price of ALL
our card readers.

That means our USB Compact Flash reader is $44.10, the dual-slot
CompactFlash Smart Media and new MemoryStick readers are $58.50 each,
5-in-1 reader $89, the new 5-in-1/USB hub $89.10, the FireWire CF
reader $111.60 and the FireWire MemoryStick reader $144.

For those that loved the expensive keychain USB memory our new MS and
MM/SD readers are exactly that style but with the added convenience of
being able to exchange the memory cards - CHEAPLY! They also have a USB
extender cable if it is a nuisance for the device to be poking right
out of your computer.

Remember that card readers are also card writers so by adding new
memory cards you effectively have a removeable hard drive. CF

The best new product I've seen come out of Taiwan is our brand new USB
5-in-1 card reader/USB hub. They are SERIOUSLY nice. It's composed of a
weighty titanium coloured cylinder, covered in hard clear acrylic that
extends past the cylinder to create the feet - there's just a hint of
violet in the acrylic at the extremities and to finish off the top is
highly polished chrome.

So we now have a portable credit card-sized 5-in-1 reader (normally
$89) and now a desktop model that adds 2 USB ports - normally $99.

Best of all our entire range of card readers are in stock, ready
to ship. All prices include GST. To receive the 10% discount offer just
insert WAMUG reader special in the special comments section and we'll
deduct 10% off your ordered reader at invoicing.

and ... the current RAM situation a very interesting update
courtesy of Legend Technologies -

It is usual to expect price to fall during March as it is year end for
Japan who usually quit all memory stock. As Japan has all but exited
the DRAM market, this traditional year end effect is not seen. Instead
contract prices to major PC companies continue to rise with spot
market prices being bouyed upward despite relatively soft demand.
Notebook memory prices continue aggressive price rise. Market confusion
on DDR standards. Rambus sales fall.   Key issues include; Contract
price to world major PC makers still increasing. Memory is now 9%
of total PC value if your PC has 256M installed  Spot marlet demand
slow but prices still drifting upwards. Hynix, Micron, Samsung
Infineon refuse any sales to traders.

Commentary; Despite a soft market prices continue their rise due to
tight control of supply by chip fabs. In particular traders have been
excluded from the chips fabs customer lists and all product is now only
supplied to the major PC assembler or through official distributors.
This supply control has seen name brand modules disappear from the spot
market to be replaced by a vast array of no name
products generally the product of low end taiwanese fabs or dud stock
clearances.

Memory as a portion of the total PC has grown dramatically during the
last three months. October 2001 saw the memory portion of the complete
PC at a historic low of 1% of total value. Assuming 256M that portion
has now risen to nearly 10%.

This trend is likely to see more makers moving standard memory down to
128M in the short term with the attendant likely increase in sales of
aftermarket memory upgrades.

CommPost: RAM discounts

2002-02-11 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
This week we have another RAM special -

512MB RAM modules for PowerBook G3 Pismo (FireWire) at $389.

The web price on these modules is $463 so you save $74 per module.
(Limited numbers only.) When ordering just insert WAMUG special in
the special comments field and you will only be billed $389. You'll see
below that RAM pricing is still trending upwards!
http://www.zytech.com.au/memory/index.html

A reminder about our $599 February FireWire sale -
80GB FireCube (Barracuda) external FireWire hard drive
30GB FireStar portable 2.5 FireWire hard drive
32x LaCie FireWire/USB burner

The new 32x LaCie burners started shipping last week. One of the lucky
recipients was my son Scott who had this to say about the burner -
The LaCie burner is excellent - most CDs take 40sec. OSX Toast converts
mp3s to AIFF on the fly which means it takes less than 3min to burn a
complete CD from Mp3s it used to take over 30min to encode etc.
It's awsome

On the RAM front here is some commentary from our suppliers -

Concerns that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Micron Technology Inc. and
Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the DRAM makers focusing on the contract
market, will fall short of DRAM chip supply to their customers in
February, have been confirmed. Given the strain on supply, Samsung and
its peers reached an agreement with their customers to scale up the
128MB SDRAM contract price, a rise of between 20 percent and 30
percent.

This rise stirred up the value of the DRAM spot price again. However,
the appreciation was not as strong as had been expected, probably
because retailers unloaded their inventories onto the spot market for
cash needed ahead of the long Lunar New Year holidays.

The DRAM spot price is likely to continue to rise, as the world's
leading computer companies, including Compaq Computer, Dell Computer
and IBM, are having a problem acquiring sufficient DRAM chips on the
contract market. They are actively searching for DRAM chips and memory
modules on the spot market.

A chipmaker said that it was not clear that the real demand for DRAM
chips justified these frantic purchases by leading computer companies.
Nevertheless, their behavior has guaranteed that DRAM demand will
exceed supply in the first quarter, resulting in a gradual rise in
prices. Anticipating this development, some DRAM chipmakers have
started to slow the pace of delivery in the hope of exploiting higher
unit prices in February, thereby bringing them faster to the break-even
point.

CommPost: Digital Camera/Flash Memory Offer

2002-01-14 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
FUJI digital cameras:

As normal we look at all the competing products and offer on the Zytech
site the product that we feel offers the best combination of quality
and dollar value. and the Fuji FinePix cameras are simply
brilliant! and yes they are made in Japan, not China, India or
elsewhere.

Under OS X they mount on the desktop (like a hard drive) without the
need for loading any driver software. Alternatively, iPhoto also sees
the Fuji cameras directly (without the need for any other drivers or
software) and you can import (and erase the camera memory if you wish)
with a click of the mouse.

These are probably the most Mac-like cameras we've seen.

The controls are easy and intuitive, there's a QuickStart guide, Mac
image editing software (if you need it!), a 16MB SmartMedia card, all
the cameras in the range use the same controls and setup and the auto
camera functions work flawlessly. We've tried many cameras and the Fuji
FinePix are a joy to use.

For full details and ordering go to -
http://www.zytech.com.au/cameras/fuji/index.html

5% OFF Special Offer:
This week's exclusive mail list offer is a 5% discount on any Fuji
camera order. Just add WAMUG special 18/1/02 in the special comments
field to ensure you receive the 5% discount.

That means you can order the Fuji FinePix 1300 for just $446.50 inc
GST.

[CommPost:] FREE courier delivery!

2001-12-10 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
Several clients have requested information on RAM pricing so here is
the current situation we've just reduced pricing on most modules
although some increased. The bad news is there is a price increase
today from our Australian manufacturer (Legend) and we have been
advised to expect to see almost daily price increases of 5% over the
next 1-2 weeks. Bottom line is if you want some RAM buy it today!

We currently have 256MB Legend RAM for G3 G4 desktops at $72 -
http://www.zytech.com.au/memory/ram.html

We have now transitioned 100% of our RAM supplies to Legend in
Australia and US Modular in the USA. Both are quality manufacturers and
only use the highest quality chips such as Micron, Hynix (formerly
Hyundai and recently purchased by Micron), NEC and Samsung. Expect to
pay a slight premium but both suppliers produce a first rate product.
All comments on RAM pricing and sourcing - as always - are very
welcome.

After much demand we have added a Mac USB 2 port PCI card for $38. They
are in stock and will be on the webpage shortly.

This week's exclusive mail list offer is FREE freight on our 80GB
FireCube FireWire hard drive -
http://www.zytech.com.au/memory/ram.html
Price is $671 inc GST; to take advantage of the FREE freight offer just
add WAMUG SPECIAL into the special comments field. This offer expires
Friday 14 December.

This week we will be launching our Zytech Affiliate programme so that
website owners including Mac groups, resellers, organisations, etc can
earn income from their clients or members purchasing Zytech product. In
particular this programme has been put together to benefit User Groups
and commercial providers the opportunity to partner with us and earn
some extra cash that can be ploughed back into providing member
services. This is an Australian programme and will be run by the same
people that do the Qantas Telstra Visa programme. Watch the website
this week for more details or simply send a return email.

By the way the Zytech store will be open right through the Christmas
period but obviously there will be no outbound freight on the normal
public holidays.

[CommPost:] Closeout special CompactFlash

2001-12-04 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
We have a final runout on 100GB FireCube hard drives at $699 + freight
.. first in, first served. You will need to order by email as we have
replaced this drive with the new 120GB model for $834 -
http://www.zytech.com.au/firewire/drives/firecube/firecube.html

If you follow this link you'll also see new pricing on the 60GB
FireCube $560 and 80GB FireCube $671. Remember we only use the
premium, superfast, super quiet Barracuda IV Seagate drives in these
models.

We have delayed the introduction of the 160GB model until the Mac OS
can see capacities over 132GB.

I'll switch to education corner now one of the neatest (and the
very cheapest) products we are stocking (excuse the Christmas pun) is a
$10 PC Card (PCMCIA) adapter for CompactFlash -
http://www.zytech.com.au/memory/cfadapter/index.html

You take a CompactFlash card from your digital camera, MP-3 player,
etc, click it into the adapter and load it instantly into the PC Card
slot on your laptop. The alternative of course is one of our range of
USB or FireWire card readers but if you are using a laptop forget Zip
disks, etc just grab a $10 CF adapter and make the almost
indestructible CompactFlash cards your new floppy disk.

OK ... the bad news; OS X does not yet support PC Card storage devices
but this is slated for an upcoming OS X update. In the meantime there's
a wet'n'dirty OS X driver at - http://pccardata.sourceforge.net/
Thankyou to Garner Annett at Apple for keeping us up-to-date on this
issue.

If you no longer wish to receive this email update, please reply with
unsubscribe in the subject line - thankyou.

CommPost: New Zytech site specials

2001-11-19 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
We have a brand new site this week with all our new products added.

There are CompactFlash PC card adapters for $10
80GB FireCube ext FW drive at $699
A Mac 1.3 megapixel digital camera at $320 (with CF slot)
FireWire desktop cameras
A FireWire scanner
FireWire memory card readers
Microsoft Office v.X (taking orders now - ships 5 December)
128MB premium CompactFlash cards for just $145

Unfortunately RAM prices continue to soar with some modules increasing
100% last week. Prices are likely to remain high for several weeks but
I doubt if we'll see prices ever get back to the levels we had up to a
week ago. Most chip manufacturers were selling their product at a loss
so expect the market to stabilise over the next few weeks and more
sustainable pricing to eventually be reached.

If you are wondering why we chose Ritek's Ridata memory cards as our
preferred memory cards, take a read of this extensive performance
review at -
http://www.zytech.com.au/memory/flashmemory/index.html

There are numerous cheapo cards about that are typically produced in
China but even amongst the better known brands you'll be absolutely
amazed at the difference in performance in these cards. We were about
to list Sandisk (where a lot of my friends from SyQuest days wound up
... sorry guys) as the preferred option and include their quite
expensive ultra flash cards but the Ridata cards overall beat
everybody, even the ultra cards!

By the way one of the added FireWire support features of OS X 10.1.1
update was a fix for the Oxford 911 compatibility problem introduced
with 10.1. We're not exactly sure if Apple's fix for this problem is
100% as we have already updated the Oxford 911 Firmware on all our hard
drive products. Any comments on this issue are welcome. As usual there
is excellent reporting on the issue at Mike Breeden's xlr8yourmac pages
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/OS_X_10.1/os_x_10_1_1_feedback.html

If you are on the list in error or wish no longer to receive these
updates simply reply with Remove in the subject line - THANKS!
