apple iPhone facial mapping - Blade runner

2017-10-16 Thread gdorn@me
Watching the apple show last night, what struck me about the facial mapping
feature, was that it appears to be quite similar to " point cloud mapping"

There are apps and iPad/iPhone addons that allow an can create 3D digital
scans. such as structure sensor.
https://structure.io/use/3d-scanning

and trimensional
http://www.trimensional.com

I can imagine that if other future apps can make use of this inbuilt scanning
hardware, photographs can be taken that will capture the scene in 3D such that
it can then be explored ( via AR) - kinda like the scene in Blade Runner when
Decker sticks a photo into his scanner then wanders around the photo!

and if that becomes the case, then i Imagine 'privacy' may become a real issue.

just some thoughts

passing of Bill Parker

2017-02-24 Thread gdorn@me
Hi Wamug
This may a notice of WAMUGS Bill Parker passing away.
If not my apologies

https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1744507319196872=19128610156

Another good man gone. Vale (Dr) Bill Parker, renaisance man,...
Bill sat at the back of his school class in UK and couldnt see a thing so
considered not too bright. Later, the miracle of glasses. and Dr Bill
Parker, microbiologist, self taught musician to performance standard, folk
dancer, rowing coach, sustainable house designer and goodness knows what else
and a hell of a lot of fun to share adventures with in 'The Red Sea
Pedestrians"... We rehearsed every Saturday afternoon for months to develop a
sound and style and a playlist, with Bill and David Hoffman combing through
hundreds of Klezmer recordings and folk songs , transcribing to written music (
usually printed on the back of used documents of a dubious nature) then a
unique Jewish or Academic style of struggle for the best result whereby
everyone was equal and stood up powerfully for their view or ideas and yet no
one was insulted and inclusion in the group as a peer was a given. A powerful
result developed and we performed at The Oz concert, various arts council or
city council "concerts in the park", at some amazing weddings, a couple of Bar
Mitzvahs, music festivals including Nannup, Fairbridge, Bridgetown Rhapsody,
Kulcha Club, live recording for the ABC etc, We started out thinking it would
be Jewish weddings and Bar Mitzvahs but developed into a 40 minute show act
where we came on and played a "show" of great music with a non stop flow
between pieces. Melanie Jones transferred her bush dance calling skills across
to teaching audiences folk dances from Jewish and Russian roots which was
hugely popular. Bill had a wickedly surprising sense of humour that went down a
treat. One of our early gigs was a huge wedding in a marquee on Bindoon farm,
Son of leading Jewish family marries daughter of major Italian restaurant
family ... so we added in a suite of Italian songs and the joy and dancing at
the wedding was amazing and we kept the italian and latin stuff in the play
list, along with Jazz crossovers derived from Klezmer.
Going to the big shows or festivals with the band was good for our family as
the band was just one of many good acts on the programme so we got to enjoy the
whole show, have trips away, hear and see things we otherwise would not have
thought of. Reuben used to come with me often to the Saturday afternoon
rehearsals and I reckon he saw a model there of how hard you can work at
knocking a band into shape. :-)
So now Bill is gone and David has sent this to the West Australian death
notices.
"Suddenly Monday night, our founding band member, clarinetist, transcribing
musician, farmer, Perth Morris Man, scientist and friend. Bill, there was so
much more you longed to do. Mel, Paul, David and all Red Sea Pedestrians
Klezmer Band members
Regards,
David Hoffman "
For me, there is of course the sense of loss and of compassion for those
closest to Bill, but also very strongly a great reminder and a realisation of
how fortunate I have been to share so much creativirty and enjoyment with such
people as Bill and everyone in that crazy band.

Hi Juliet
I use an app called phototransferapp

which allows both download and upload via wifi to any computer on the wifi

I've found it easier and faster than itunes - but is does not sync like itunes.

They certainly make it difficult to discern who are legitimate phone calls.

iphone/ipad backups

2016-10-02 Thread gdorn@me
Hi WAMUG

The other day, a family members iPhone accidentally dropped into a toilet
bowl! and no longer starts ups . This phone hadn't been backup up for some
time, thus a few months of photos, lecture notes, ideas and the like evidently
can not be recovered - so say Apple.

Thus I take this opportunity to remind members to routinely back up your
iPhones ; if you have anything important on them you want to keep - just in
case a wet accident occurs.

I went to backup up my iPhone and get the

"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone " Gary Dorn iPhone" because an
invalid response was received from the device"

apple mail - drafts

2016-08-01 Thread gdorn@me
Helo Wamug

RE: Apple Mail 5.3
Mac os 10.7.5

Drafts

could someone please enlighten me to the workings of Apple mail, in partilcular
how Mail box Drafts work

I understand this is the place where email is temporarily stored until it is
sent.

but

sometime I send an email and is shows up in both DRAFTS and SENT

does that mean its hasn't been sent ?

Mail help says
Save and send draft messages
If you’re writing a message and want to finish it later, you
can save it as a draft. Mail saves drafts automatically a few
seconds after you start to write a message. If you quit Mail while an unsent
message is open, Mail saves it as a draft automatically.
Drafts mailbox
The Drafts mailbox contains messages you’ve saved but haven’t sent yet. The
Drafts mailbox remains displayed until there are no drafts and you quit Mail.

Send draft messages
When you’re done writing the message and it’s ready to send, click the Send
icon in the toolbar or choose Message > Send.
If you have several drafts to send, select them in the mailbox where you store
drafts and choose Message > Send.
By default, drafts are stored in the Drafts mailbox.

Further to the above, for the past year, I am also finding that some emails,
particularly those that are either forwarded or replied, completely disappear
from my mail boxes - simply can't find them!

thanks in advance for any advice or word so wisdom.

The software they are starting to use are photoshop and illustrator.

She has the means to get her own macbook. ( currently shares a 2009 macbook 13")

Can anyone who is familiar with apps please suggest the minimum spec machine

Re: iMac & mavericks: start up disk problems

2015-12-19 Thread gdorn@me
Howdy
Further to the problems we've had with our iMac harddisk, it is evidently a
Seagate 2TB purchased+ installed feb 2013 by Macworx Joondalup. They have
confirmed that its a dead harddrive and is still in warranty ( 3yrs) - return
to base.

So we had them install a 250 GB SDD in the Superdrive bay, so we can install a
replacement harddrive in the HD bay when it arrives .

Question

The files in time machine are total 650 GB - too much for the 250 GB SDD!

In migration assistant - its has the option to select which files/folders to
migrate.

What is the minimum files/folders can we migrate from the time machine to the
SDD so that we can atleast use the important business files.

hmm there are other questions attached to this - I might just start another
thread on it.

migrate assistant for 2TB hardisk to new 250 GB SDD transfer

2015-12-19 Thread gdorn@me
Howdy

Following on from the previous thread about our dead hard drive problems, we
had installed a smaller 250 GB SDD.

Thus until we have the original 2TB hard dive replaced, we need to operate from
a smaller file/folder set.

I've read that creating a new user and then copy /paste select folders to that
user from the Time Machine backup will cause permission/ownership issues,
therefore we are better of using Migration Assistant. ie
Applications>Utilities>Migration Assistant

My first look at Migration Assistant saids that we can select what to transfer
over ie which Users and which folders.

migration assistant says to select from the following:

Applications 28 GB
User 1 9.8 GB
User 2 93 GB
User 3 628 MB
user 4 335 GB - ( this is the one we want to keep going) consists of
Library 35 GB
docs 23 GB
music 7.6 GB
Pics 248 GB
other data 20mb

User 5 30 GB
User 6 20 GB
User 7 116 GB

Other Files and Folders 2.38 GB
Computer and Network setting 39MB

 - we are particularly keen and getting Sticky Notes over for one User 4 (
normally kept in Users/Library/stickies database - but is not visible on the
Time Machine backup - there is no User>Library folder) along with Work folder,
Email, Contacts

What would be the minimum folders to migrate over ?

What happens if we only do a partial migration ?

Hope the above make sense.

Re: iMac & mavericks: start up disk problems

2015-12-19 Thread gdorn@me
Hi Neil
thanks for the suggestion.
I'd agree- be much easer to put in a 2TB hardisk now migrate over to it and run
it as a dual drive setup. We were hoping that the damaged harddrive would be
replaced straight away, but unfortunately for us, it evidently has to be
returned to manufacture first (Seagate).

We've only just have enough money to do SSD or the HD at the moment not both.
- and figured that a SSD would be a better investement for now.

If we can get the drive off this week - hopefully by the time my Wife gets back
into here work seriously again ( mid Jan) the replacement may have arrived.

2015-12-07 Thread gdorn@me
I've checked the TM backup using a macbook - it was visible and readable in
Finder. ( dec 5 2015)

I've downloaded DiskMaker X and have started the making of the Mavericks
installer to USB - how long ought this take - so far its been saying

" DiskMaker X prepares your disk ... please wait "

for over 60 minutes now.

Further to the advice noted below, how do I go about checking that the Time
Machine backup we supposedly have actually exists and is accessible.
I say this because for a while, the time machine had be turned off and I
frequently find that the usb cable unplugged.

So I would like to check the status of time machine before doing anything else.

How would I do this - I have access to a macbook with Mavericksor Yosemite and

2015-10-05 Thread gdorn@me
Hi Wamuggers,
FYI
Found this "historic" you tube video

even though what is demonstrated is now common place - ie 3D modelling - the
software demonstrated - Architrion, has been updated into BoA, which is what I
use everyday and pretty much still does the same thing.

apple termites

2015-04-08 Thread gdorn@me
howdy all
thought this might be of interest

we discovered termites under our suspended timber floor the other day
on further inspection of where I store my apple boxes, it appears that termites
prefer the apple boxes over other makers.

Thus My G4 , collectable Bondi IMac and 20 inch screen boxes have all be eaten
to various stages, including the foam packaging.

What a bugga.

I was advised by an entomologist to stick boxes outside in sun, open up as much
as possible and let the predators go for it - ie ants, birds, spiders

Was an amazing site how quickly these predators forraged for the juicey white
termites.

Of note , is that I inspected that area back in January 10, where there was no
sign of them.

 my previous reply:
 /Begin Quote:

Save As has simply become Duplicate Duplicate is better than the old
system. And so is Revert To Saved, which works way better than the old Quit
and then answer No to Do you want so save your changes?.

You get the same functionality with basically the same number of keystrokes
overall, but you get a LOT more flexibility and a lot more safety net under
 you with the new system.

For example, if you make some changes, then decide you don't want them and
you Revert To Saved, then Quit, the document will look just like it was
 before your changes.
Drag-n-drop it, attach it to an email, it is unchanged. BUT you can actually
retrieve the changes in the revision history if you later decide you want to
look at them, or copy some of them, or actually use that version.

A LOT more flexible, unless you're worried about subpoena's and want no
evidence you ever thought of making any changes. (In which case, you should
be worried about temp files and all kinds of other issues.)

A new feature of OS X Lion http://tuaw.com/tag/lion is Auto Save, which is
going to stop a lot of Mac users from doing the Command-S twitch. Versions is
another related feature that keeps copies of different versions of your
 documents for posterity.

Auto Save takes a snapshot of whatever you happen to have open on the screen
in an app at any particular time, and saves it for you. Let's say that you
have TextEdit open with three different documents, all scattered about on
 your 27 display.
None of the documents have been saved, and you suddenly realize that you need
to leave for a meeting. You quit out of TextEdit, and the familiar Do you
want to save the changes you made in...? dialog doesn't appear. No problem.
The next time you launch TextEdit, all three of those documents open up in
the exact same locations on your screen that they were in originally.

Use File Save just once: When you do decide to save a new document, to
give it a title and location on disk, use the File Save menu item.
Afterwards, the File Save menu item won’t appear for this document.
Instead, you’ll see File Save a Version

Work in a duplicate: If you’re about to do something in a document that might
prove disastrous (such as a global Find-and- Replace), choose File
Duplicate to get a new, unsaved document whose contents are identical to the
current state of the original document.

Export is self explanatory - if you wish to export your document, or print
 to PDF

press save anyway

now says

You don’t have permission to save the file “... sk 3.png”.

To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File

upgrade to lion 10.7.5 - feedback

2015-02-13 Thread gdorn@me

thanks to those who provided advice on my upgrade form 10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.5 -
Daniel , Ronni etc

I had a significant problem with iCloud after the update. - ie mail iCal,
address book not working at all ( crashing)

Eventually I rang Apple support and with the help of Harris in Sydney, fixed it
up - took about 90 mins on the phone and his screen watching utility

solution was a complete removal of UserLibrary folder

Evidently its a known fault that some people have issues with iCloud when
upgrading and the heavy weight solution is to remove the library altogether ,
then rebuild it slowly via Time machine.

So its now working okay

My peeves with Lion are

In Preview

Save As has gone. instead we have save a version, duplicate - which does
not suit me at all.
How do I change an image resolution /size now?

Lions Safari 5.1.7 does not work - (crashes on opening)

I copied v 5.1.10 from a macbook, and have to keep it in a separate folder .

Re: Say Goodbye to iPhoto and Aperture

2014-06-28 Thread gdorn
As iPhoto is a native mac app, will we able to transfer/install the iPhoto app
from SN/ML/mav to Yosemite and use it anyway?

I am thinking like we still do with iWeb ( ie its discontinued, but can still
be used- ie a legacy app)

 Hi Ronni,
I have several thousand photos in iPhoto.
Considering the ADSL speed in this country is NOT too flash, I don’t even

Do you feel that the new “Photos for OSX” will force us to do that ?
Or do you reckon we will still be able to “just” store them on our Mac ?

 Hi Steven,

If you do upgrade your iPhoto Library to the Yosemite - Photos App, your
Photos will be stored in iCloud.
 Apple have mentioned:
That that the company will be ceasing development of Aperture and iPhoto,
offering Photos for OS X as a replacement, which was first shown at WWDC.
With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library,
enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them
from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture. When Photos for
OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture
libraries to Photos for OS X.
Apple says libraries will be able to migrate across to the new application
when the application ships. Apple is working with Adobe to offer a upgrade
path to Lightroom. As noted by TechCrunch, Apple will offer a Yosemite
compatibility update for Aperture, but otherwise development has ended.

Will I still be able to store all my photos ‘On My Mac’ or ‘Do I have to
 store them on iCloud’?

Apple Might Finally Solve Photo Storage Hell

As for the expense, Apple has already announced very reasonable new iCloud
pricing; $50/year for 200GB is great. For comparison, Dropbox is $200/year
 for 200GB.

This is my hope for iCloud Photo Library. I have a feeling it’ll be a
fraction of this at first, but over time grow into the service I’ve always
wanted. Although this would obviously only work for people who have adopted
the Apple ecosystem, I think it could be one of the most straightforward,
turnkey solutions that could exist, and would be very appealing to Apple’s
 entire customer base.

Apple to challenge Dropbox with iCloud Drive

Apple took the wraps off a new cloud storage service called iCloud Drive at
its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) today. The new service will take on
wildly popular services like Dropbox will feature deep integration with
devices running OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.

All the accounts - mine, kids, are on apples icloud server, , hence show up on
other computers

although I do find that some sent emails only show up on the source.

Anyway, these also get backed up via time machine on both MacPro and iMac.

Presumably if an email account does get lost, it can be restored via
Timemachine (less anything since last backup - 1 hr ago)

hopefully nothing will ever got lost!

It was just weird that the iPad email temporarily disappeared! -

The red dot/white simply means that the certificate is out of date. The
certificate is just an electronic document confirming that you are who you
say you are. If you select one of the certificates and click Show
Certificate you will see all the information it contains. This is of no real
significance though. Just choose one (probably either of the .Mac ones) and
click Continue. You will be asked at some point to confirm in your keychain
that the certificate is correct. Just follow all the leads. You should
eventually arrive at the shopping page.

Yes they all have expired
selecting either one keeps coming back to the same notice - ie a valid
certificate is required.

interestingly - I tied the online shop address in Firefox, opened okay - could
it be a safari thing then?

ahh very old maybe 2001?
Could be a driver issue; check you are using the latest driver for the
 scanner.

downloading and reinstalling drivers says I had already the latest driver (
since approx April 2011)

In Applications Utilities - 'Epson Scan Settings'; check the settings are
 correct.

hmm - no such app present - did search - nothing of that sort found.

Is it likely to be a (old ) hardware issue.

thanks for the advice.

Re: Apple event roundup - prices!

2012-09-14 Thread gdorn
I've noted the price difference of the iphone 5 between USA and Australia and
others on the Apple stores

iphone 5
lightning adaptor

USA $199= $175 AU
$29 US = $25 AU
OZ $799 = $799 AU
$35 AU = $35 AU
S $948 (singapore?) = $603 AU $42 SGD
= $32 AU
HK $5588= 630 $AU
$238 HKD= $26 AU

Anyone got any thoughts an why there is such a price difference for the phone
when the accessories are fairly evenly/similarly priced?

Aren't these things made in Singapore or Taiwan or somewhere around SE Asia.

mail since mobile me move to icloud

2012-08-31 Thread gdorn
Hello WAMUG

After the demise of mobile me, I moved over to iCloud- for email only ( running
OS 10.6.8)

I have 4 accounts ( in preferences accounts on this Mac Pro they all say
MobileMe IMAP, all Port 993 use SSL and authentication password

It took a while but eventually got all my email accounts converted to iCloud -
I even transferred my WAMUG membership over from my garydorn@ausconnect
address to this one.

for a quite a while now, when I go send, a message comes up saying

Cannot send message using the server smtp.me.com:gdorn
Sending the message content to the server failed
select a different outgoing mail server form the list below or click try Later
to leave the message in the your Outbox until it can be sent
Sending form gdorn gd...@me.com)

This seems to occurs at irregular intervals in all the accounts

Is there some setting I have not selected or adjusted?

Any advice appreciated

thanks

Re: mail since mobile me move to icloud

2012-08-31 Thread gdorn
I think I may have just fixed my issue up

1. set from to gd...@me.com instead of gd...@mac.com and has started to send

2. used the correct wamug address!

sorry for taking up bandspace with my nonsense.

 Authentication: Apple Token (Not Password)
 Outgoing Mail Server: iCloud (iCloud)
 TLS Certificate: None
 Incoming Mail Server: p01 -imap.mail.me.com
User Name: whatever your user name is
Password: whatever your iCloud Account password is

hmm my settings are different to these.
all accounts say Mobile Me IMAP
authentication: no option for Apple token
outgoing servier is smtp.me.com.gdorn (for this account)
imcoming server is mail.me.com ( greyed out)

Have I done something wrong?
