Hi I am having major problems trying to import photos from my wives iPhone 12 to her iMac Core Retina i5 3.1 21.5” (4K, Late 2015). (Which has 8GB of RAM, (which according to everymac is not upgradeable after purchase.)
Initially when I tried to import using Photo’s it was running El Capitan and I got the message that it didn’t recognise the HEIC photos on the iPhone and that I would have to upgrade to 10.14.6 Mojave. So I backed up on two disks and installed Mojave. Once Mojave was installed I thought I would open Photos and see what happened, it ran through an “upgrade”. So I then backed that up using one of the back up disks, this took 30 hours!!! I could see things were not looking good. So then today I tried to import post upgrade and got the message, "A software upgrade is required to connect to XXXXX’s iPhone, would you like to download and instal this update now?” I had a look and it wanted me to instal Monterey 12.6.6. I believe the iMac is technically able to function wth Monterey, but as the more modern operating systems use more and more RAM, I wonder just how effectively it would operate if I have to go down this avenue? Now I think this is really odd why would I get the recommendation to upgrade to Mojave if it was incompatible? I looked on the web and some people had described a method of importation using Image Capture. I tried that also and it didn’t work as the first part of the process, “Open Photos on your Mac and choose ‘Import from iPhone’ from the Import menu”, didn’t work as the iPhone does not show up on the Mac, so I don’t get that option . I did try just using Image Capture independently, with “Photos” as the destination in the import to box at the bottom and that too failed. I would appreciate if anyone has any idea of what I can/should do next? With regard to taking 30 odd hours to write to the back up disk, it was about 526GB on a 2TB disk. I suspected that maybe something was wrong with the iMac, so I tried to use DiskWarrior to find that DiskWarrior Recovery Maker is incompatible with the APFS system that comes with Mojave and so is Disk Utility. I would hardly call that progress. I have reset the PRAM and the SMC, but would like to know if anyone has any ideas as to how with the APFS system I can verify and if necessary repair my hard drive, if in fact that is an issue?
