re: Australian search engines?

2002-12-18 Thread Ray Forma
Everyone may be interested in my recent experiences in getting our site
http://capetocape.8m.com listed by various search engines.

Yahoo and Alta Vista both wanted substantial subscription payments to list our
site immediately, else I could wait 6 months for a 'free' listing. Even then,
our site would not get its fair place, because these engines would give paying
sites 'priority' in the listings.

So, if you use Yahoo and Alta Vista you will not get a true search; instead you
get a listing of the sites that pay the most.

Google, by comparison, offered to list the site immediately, and a search for
cape to cape publishing on Google will immediately list our pages.

So, use Google to find Australian sites, and just add Australia as one of your
search terms.

So, use Google to find Australian sites, and just add Australia as
one of your search terms.

Or you could just go to google.com and click the 'Australia only' web
pages radio button!

(Must be a new addition to google in the last few days)

The google page may detect something in your browser or IP address
that you are from Australia. Otherwise try http://www.google.com.au

For me http://www.google.com.au gives the buttons
 but http://www.google.com doesn't have them

http://search66.com/ is a country-specific search page that
channels searches to a number of search engines. Links to the
individual search engines (specifically Australian) are available at
http://search66.com/addurl.htm

Go Eureka http://www.goeureka.com.au/standard.php is the Australian
Alta Vista.

Yahoo's Australian/NZ search page is http://au.anzwers.yahoo.com/

I've found that adding Australia without the quotes to my search terms
brings up the relevant Australian matches to my searches first.

Don't know about good but try -
http://www.webwombat.com.au/

There's also links to other Aus search engines at -

It looks like Matilda (search engine) may have gone walkies.

Another approach is to add
site:.au
to your Google search.
