Re: noisy fans

2014-10-17 Thread Kevin Lock
Ronni,

update on noisy fans in G5 tower.

I had reset PRAM and PMU and with a compressor blew out any dust inside. The
fans start up loud and die down as the OS appears on the screen, then get loud
again without opening any applications. The air coming out the back of the
tower is barely warm.

It is a quad G5 and nice and fast. If I can find someone who is need of a good
fast machine I think they will put up with a bit of noise……it aint that bad.

Thanks again,

Kevin

noisy fans

2014-10-12 Thread Kevin Lock
Hi all,

I am preparing a nice PPC G5 tower for distribution (liquid cooled model). The
fans are very noisy and I have not been able to find a fix on the net. Both
pieces of software I have will not run on this machine.

Any ideas for me?

Thanks,

Kev

Re: noisy fans

2014-10-12 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Kevin,

The fan syncing software is on the original system installation disk. Start up
holding down the D key.
BUT, I take it from what you mentioned you don't have the original system
installation disk.

You could download Hardware Monitor Lite It will tell you if you have a cpu
overheating issue.
If one or both CPU's are overheating (+65 degrees C) the fans will run
continuously.
http://www.bresink.com/osx/216202/details.html

I guess you have done the suggestions below, but I'll post just in case you
have not, or other members with G5 Mac Pro Power Mac models might be
interested.
A) Reset PMU PRAM

B) De-Dust the G5 - Over the years of 'fixing' G5 Noisy Fans I found this is
the most common cause... DUST!

As the fans pull air into the computer, they also pull in dust.
Dust can accumulate on the air intake vents, on the fan itself, or on any
surface along the flow of air within the computer. When a layer of
dust sits atop a hot component, it acts as an insulator, preventing some of the
heat from escaping into the air.
And if dust blocks the air flow, the heat that does escape has nowhere to go.
Either way, your fan must work harder, which not only makes it noisier but also
makes it suck in even more dust.

You can remove dust by brushing or wiping, by vacuuming, or by blowing it off
with compressed air. The compressed-air approach is the least desirable,
because it puts the dust right back into the air.
An ordinary vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment is more preferred, but before
using such a vacuum on the inside of your computer, note the warning just
ahead. If you choose the brushing or wiping approach, be sure to use a soft,
dry cloth or brush—and a gentle touch.

Warning! Conventional AC-powered vacuum cleaners, particularly those with
plastic nozzles, can in theory build up enough static charge to damage your
computer’s circuitry if used on the inside of a case. To vacuum inside a
computer, use either a battery-powered vacuum or an antistatic vacuum designed
expressly for cleaning electronic gear. In any case, be careful not to touch
the nozzle to any components inside your computer.

To de-dust your Mac, follow these steps:
1. Shut down and unplug your computer; also unplug any peripherals or other
cables. If your computer is a laptop and has a removable battery, remove the
battery.

2. Be sure you have plenty of room to work. If your computer is located under a
desk, for instance, move it out into the open.

3. Using your dust-removal tool of choice, remove dust from in or around any
holes or slots on the outside of the case. Be aware that some of these openings
may be on the bottom or the back of the case, depending on the design.

These remaining steps are for desktop computers only:
4. Following the instructions that came with your Mac for installing RAM or
other internal options, carefully open the case. The method for doing this
varies from model to model. For example:

* Most Mac Pro and Power Mac models have a side panel that you can remove
without tools by opening a latch.

* For iMac G4 models, turn the computer on its side (using a soft cloth to
protect the display) and loosen the screws on the bottom plate.

* Remove the back cover of iMac G5 models (and early Intel-based iMacs) by
placing the computer face down on a soft cloth and loosening the three screws
in the grill on the bottom.

* The aluminum Intel-based iMacs have only a small compartment for adding RAM;
further disassembly is tricky and probably best left to a professional.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Tony,

If you press the iMac power button while you are inserting the power cord, the
iMac will enter a mode in which the fans (blowers) run at full speed.

In order to correct the issue, reset the SMC and then start the computer by
pressing the power button after the power cord has been fully inserted.

To reset the SMC on a Intel iMac

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Cheers,

Hi List,

I recently bought a refurbished 8 core MacPro from the Apple Online Shop. 2
gig of RAM, and running Sys 10.5.1. It is the model which has just been
superceded.

It was delivered about a week ago, but due to work commitments I only got to
unpack it yesterday. It seemed to boot fine, and I loaded and set about
running a memory test programme. All seemed well yesterday, with the whisper
quiet operation of the fans which I had previously seen in the retail shops I
had visited.

It is temporarily set up in the middle of the floor in my office, with
unrestricted airflow.

This morning I woke it from sleep, and shortly afterwards the fans came to life
both loud and strong. The air coming out seems barely warm, and the case is
not in the least warm. Upon being made to go to sleep, the fans die, and on
wakeup they kick in again. I have tried shutting down, leaving it for 15
minutes and rebooting, with only the Finder running. Same deal, really loud
fans if the machine is awake, instant quiet if I put it to sleep.

The machine is presently switched off.

Does anybody have any ideas??

Thanks,

Bill Chesnutt

No ! But it reinforces my reservations about refurbished
recently made gear !

Obviously the refurbished gear went back to the factory ( ? ) for some
reason .

The question always to be answered is :

Was the problem fixed OR
as in lot's of situations , did the refurbishment consist only of new
packaging ?

Hello Bill,

Normally loud fan noise and fans running fast is caused by build up of
dust. Being a refurbished unit from Apple it should be clean, you
would hope?

Check that there is no dust clogging the vent on your video card. Wipe
it with a Q-Tip and see if it fixes your problem.

Otherwise check here:
http://macsaregreat.com/?p=63

I read this on the Apple Mac Pro Discussions some time ago kept the
text but not the link, sorry.

Quote:
I SOLVED my fan Problem. I decided to clean my computer on the
inside. While doing so, I decided to look up how to take out the front
cooling fan on the internet, and I stumbled upon this articlehttp://macsaregreat.com/?p=63

My fan problem was caused by a solid layer of dust built up on the
heat sink of my ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card. If you go to the
article linked above, you can see a picture of how it looks.

If you aren't looking for it, you will easily miss it because it will
be a solid layer of dust covering the heat sink (plus its not the best
viewing angle to see).

I cleaned the heat sink to my card, booted my computer, fans ran loud
for 5 seconds and then slowed down and started running quietly!

I can't vouch for other video cards, but this totally fixed my
problem, even the booting up twice problem!

End of Quote:

Cheers,
Ronni

G5 fans

2006-03-18 Thread Chris Burton

Hi everyone

Im puzzled why the fans in my G5 (dual 2ghz) are running more
frequently now. Up until yesterday they were handling the heat pretty
well only starting up intermittently. Yesterday I upgraded to 10.4.5
and now they start up much more frequently, even when my office is
not warm ie in the early morning.

Is there any way of changing a default temperature at which they
start up using software? Has anyone some idea of what's going on?

Many thanks to any advice or clues

kind regards

chris

Re: G5 fans

2006-03-18 Thread James Devenish
Hi Chris,

I don't know specifically about any changes to the tolerances. The G5s
have many sensors, but I guess you won't have a recorded history to
peruse. There is also no utility bundles with Mac OS X for viewing you
sensor readings :-(

However, you could use Activity Monitor (Mac HD Utilities Activity
Monitor) to see if there are any highly active programmes running in
the background of your computer.

To do this, open Activity Montior and you should see a list of
Processes. Choose All Processes as the filter, then sort on the %
CPU column. The items near the top of the list may offer clues.
However, it is really something that you must compare against
normal, and normal can be different for each person (depending on
peripherals, software, Internet, etc). You can expect kernel_task
and Activity Monitor to appear near the top of your process lists
because you are using them to generate the process list. If, on the
other hand, you saw Acme Printer Driver: 80% CPU, then you'd guess
something was amiss.

Re: G5 fans

2006-03-18 Thread Chris Burton

Hi James

thanks very much indeed for this description of the Activity
Monitor...I have been transfixed by this app!! Just watching the %cpu
use while doing nothing is amazing, with just mail, firefox and the
Monitor on. Firefox alternates with the Monitor and by going to the
'Network' button there is a constant stream of 'packets/sec' coming
in!!?? Thats a worry! This reduces to 0 when I turn the modem off!!
Surprise surprise chris!

For others who may want to know, regarding the fans, I spoke with
Nick Krane at Joondalup and he suggested to me both resetting the
pram ( I did, with no difference) and then shutting down and
completely removing the power cord for a few minutes. That was 2
hours ago and the fans are back to normal!!! He said it resets the
pmu or smu or something??

Thanks for your input James

kind regards

chris

[OT] Big news for Star Wars fans!!!

2004-02-11 Thread Rod Lavington

Hi All!

I am sorry for the OT post, but I am sure there is a large majority of Star
Wars fans on this list!

Anyway, the Star Wars trilogy (IV, V, VI) are finally coming to DVD. 4
DVDs, with an extra dvd full of docos and other extras.

Due for release at the end of September in the US.

RANT

This is true, however they will be the bastardized abominations that
George calls the special editions. This is a man who said Casablanca
shouldn't be colorized to protect cinema history, and then proceeded to
rape Ep 4,5 and 6. If he wants my money, he is going to have to release
the ORIGINAL theatrical versions, untouched by CG artists. (Or possibly
the CBS Special Edition where Leia's boob falls out of that metal
bikini in Jedi). But he isn't going to do that, so he isn't going to
get my money.

On a related note, Indiana Jones 4 has been delayed due to script
issues. Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford both love the script. George
Lucas doesn't. Out of those three, I wonder which two would have a
better idea as to what constitutes a good script. (HINT: George didn't
write the script for New Hope or Empire. He did for Jedi though, and he
gave us Ewoks.)

If George Lucas got 10 bucks every time someone wanted to kick his
butt, he would have more money than the earth could hold.

It wasn't actually Leia's boob, it was one of the alien dancers with
the grey floppy pointy heads and it falls out when Jabba opens the pit
and feeds her to that giant creature thingy..I remember rewinding that
bit a million times when I was 5

hang on... got my facts a bit wrong

George wrote and directed New Hope. Gary Kurtz produced it.

Leigh Bracket Larry Kasdan wrote Empire, Irvin Kershner directed it.
Gary Kurtz produced it.

Larry Kasdan George wrote Jedi. Richard Marquand directed it. Howard
Kazanjian produced it.

Gary Kurtz parted with George after Empire. Had Gary gotten is way with
Jedi, there would have been no second death star, no ewoks and Lando
would have died in the beginning. Han Solo would have died in the end.

Actually, George wrote and directed a New Hope, but only provided the
storyline for the second. Empire was directed by Irvin Kershner, with the
script by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan. Most agree that Empire was
the best out of all 5 that have been made (you can see why!). Return of the
'George' saw Lucas play a role in the script, and of course has been
Executive Producer of all 5.

I'd say by the time they started work in Return (around 1980), Hollywood
just started seeing the massive monetary benefits of merchandising. And
they have been 'selling out' ever since.. :-)

(We better end this thread now before the list nanny gets angry :-)

News: Microsoft set to woo Mac fans

I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for Appleworks. Seems Apple are
going to actively promote Micro$oft Office for the Mac.

AppleWorks survived the last Office release and Apple didn't abandon
it (well, much :), I suspect it'll do the same again. AppleWorks is
still a lot cheaper.

Have fun,
