Hooking a modem up to a Mac LC111

2002-04-11 Thread braunstonian
Hello,
I'm perhaps going to ask the impossible but I thought I'd give it a
try

Currently I have a Mac LC111 (a very old Mac by the standards of i-
macs) with a system in French - System 7.5.1 I think.

I took this machine to the UK last year with the intention of setting
it up with a modem purely for email use - no surfing, just writing
messages.

Currently I have no modem for this machine as I'm not sure what I can
actually use with it. Obviously I should be able to use it on the
mains in the UK (230v) but my question is... What will I need to set
this machine up with a modem. What drivers, connection lead etc?

So far I've managed to find a compatible copy of Eurdora Mail but
have no software/driver to dial up a modem. There is no COM1 socket
on the LC111 - only printer and Apple Talk sockets - purely for Apple
type connection leads. I'm not even sure if these have been swapped
over at some point as the Apple talk socket is used for a printer(?)

Well there you are - my bizarre question. If anyone can help with
advice on this I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks in advance,

John Nelson, France.

For the West Australian Macintosh Usergroup we've spread far and wide
indeed :-)

To answer your questions. The COM1 socket you are referring to does
exist, but not like it does on an IBM PC-compatible. The round printer
and AppleTalk sockets are the ones you're looking for.

This is how it's intended to work:

Both ports are identical.

AppleTalk runs (in preference) over the one marked as the printer port,
but you don't need to run AppleTalk if you don't have any AppleTalk
devices - you switch it on and off in the Chooser.

The other port, generally marked as the modem port - it is identical to
the printer port - is used for people to hookup their other serial
devices, including modems.

Many - if not most - modems will work fine. What you need to actually
hook it up is a Macintosh Modem Cable, which converts the round RS422
plug into a 9 or 25 pin RS232 plug which you can then plug into your
modem.

The final step is to find drivers - generally downloadable from the net.
If you have a choice of modems choose the one that comes with the
drivers, or one that you can readily download the drivers for.

If you're getting the modem from a shop, see if you can get the shop to
help you make it work.

Finally, your LCIII will very happily serve as an Email machine, and if
you run a browser you'll most likely surf without problems as well. I
cannot remember how much memory you can put into an LCIII, but have a
look at http://lowendmac.com/ and it will tell you.

We have an old LC that connects perfectly well to the net using
MacPPP and MacTCP. You can find them at
http://www.index-site.com/macppp.html

Connect the modem to the modem port (or the printer port - either
will work). Select the port and configure using ConfigPPP and it
should all work!

The page I've pointed to has a detailed description of what to do.

Cheers, Kaye

I used the same setup many moons ago. Yes, FreePPP was the best bet and a simle
modem string with a 28k Banksia modem (but I've used several modems inc 56K
with the same string...hang on a sec, I have a list here somewhereah...here
it is) Wow! I have a list for many modem brands (1996...so may be out of
date)..the string I used was ATF...give me another second and I'll dust off my
LCIII! Looks like I've uninstalled FreePPP...but I'm sure youcan get it off
Tucows.com. Incidently, if you have problems with a cable (I may have one of
those put away).

Re: Hooking a modem up to a Mac LC111

2002-04-11 Thread John Nelson Isabelle Briant
Hello Peter,

Thanks a lot for the information. I never realised that the two ports did the
same job. In fact I will not be using a printer so at least that will give me
more flexibility.

I have downloaded the FreePPP - via my PC and have transferred this to a Mac
disk through a Mac Exchange program. The file is a *.HQX which has become *.SIT
on my Mac floppy. Is *.SIT a Stuffit Expander file?

Thanks for your invaluable help.

You LCIII has 2 serial ports - one with a printer icon and the other with a
telephone icon. Functionally these ports are almost identical, the only
difference being that the printer port doubles as an AppleTalk port. You can
print or use a modem from either port. You will need a Macintosh modem cable
(this may be be most difficult part of your problem, depending on how helpful
your local suppliers are) and an init string for your modem. You'll also need
some good connection software, and on the LCIII you'll probably find that
FreePPP might be your best bet since it allows you easily to enter a custom
modem init string, overcoming the need to make sure you have the right driver.
Stay with a well-known brand of modem, and make sure it's Hayes-compatible to
avoid headaches.

FreePPP is no longer listed on VersionTracker, but you can get it from the
sites listed at http://www.rockstar.com/ppp.shtml.
