It worked pretty darn good in 10.2, so I hope they haven't changed things for the sake of change! I tend to agree. Panther networking seems determined to phase out the classic method of mounting shared folders and devices, where they would mount as icons on the desktop, and which you could unmount as you finished with them by dragging to the trash. The new network browsing model works more like the Windows arrangement where, having once logged in to a remote share, you remain logged in until you log out of your local account. This is much less secure on a computer which is used by several people. On my system, the network browsing model works fine for networking through to my old 7500. If I try it using Go Connect to Server... (the Jaguar way) the Finder hangs while trying to draw the contents of the remote window. Note to Apple: Gimme the Panther functionality, but please make the Jaguar way work again! -- Peter Hinchliffe Apwin Computer ServicesFileMaker Pro Solutions Developer Perth, Western Australia Phone (618) 9332 6482Fax (618) 9332 0913 *Seasons greetings all* While this causes probs for you I think it may have fixed some things for me. In the past I would experience nasty, but recoverable hangs on OSX when a mounted share changed status ie went offline. So far (two weeks) I havent noticed this prob. Previously we needed to be v careful and always dismount these drives asap, now Im thinking we can relax a little, hopefully. Basically anything which required a network connection (Help, FTP bookmarks, network shares etc) could cause this prob if the share wasnt available resulting in 'The Spinning Wheel of Disenchantment'. Cheers Paul PS Sorry about leaving the previous thread in this message, I think it is probably apt. If a 56k connection has probs with text Id be looking for a new ISP or something.

It is not one email that has a problem over 56k, its when you are subscribed to multiple lists etc. It also wastes peoples download limits, and bandwidth. It also means that unless you are a top poster people need to scroll through pages of stuff they have already read in order to read your response. It comes down to responsible internetting and netiquette. I suggest you read http://www.albion.com/netiquette/ especially http://www.albion.com/netiquette/rule4.html Adam.
Re: Is it just me, or does Networking in 10.3 suck!
Just something I've noticed, if you have 2 computers on the same network with names that start with the same word such as Matt's computer and Matt's imac you will get this symptom. Changing the name of one has fixed this problem twice for me now. Other than that I have a client who brings his powerbook 10.3.1 from home where he has an airport network to work where there is a DHCP server running on ethernet. Changing locations gets him on the net fine. Generally I've found the networking in 10.3 good so far apart from the inexplicable need to have to turn appletalk on from both the network settings and from the Directory Access Utility. I set-up a gigabit network the other day with a G5 and a high spec Win XP box and the transfer speed was like nothing I have ever seen. I had to choose files of 50Meg and more just to see a transfer progress bar appear on the Mac. Anything smaller and the files just appeared on the desktop as if by magic. Just my experience so far. I can see the iMac, it will prompt me for, and accept, my password and will even display the shared partitions, but clicking on them informs me that the volume cannot be found. Rebooting, etc does not solve the problem. Obviously I can live with the hassle of a one-way connection, but... Roll on 10.3.2. Re: Is it just me, or does Networking in 10.3 suck!
Generally I've found the networking in 10.3 good ... I'm having endless trouble connecting my PC (Windows ME) to my eMac running 10.3. (used to have it working from 10.2). I can see the eMac from the PC, but get No permission to access resource if I try to connect. I have enabled Windows sharing in System Preferences. Is this another case of having to also set switches somewhere else? Despite the fact that networking seems to be working OK on the PC I can't see it at all from the eMac - it simply doesn't appear when I browse the network. Any suggestions will be gratefully received (ok - I know - get rid of the PC :-) Cheers, Kaye -- Kaye Stott and Geoff Prince Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web: http://www.omninet.net.au/~kg/

Rod this definitely seems to be the case I use a Powerbook between here and work, moving between Ethernet and two airport networks.
