Re: MacBook Pro Lion to Snow Leopard

2012-02-06 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Diana

Just adding to what Ronni has posted.

Depending on when she bought it, will affect what can be done with it. If it's
one of the most current models (Which is referred to as the MacBookPro x-inch,
Late 2011 or MacBookPro8,2) these were upgraded in October 2011. Because of
this, the Firmware on it would have been upgraded at that point which meant it
would only run what it came with (which is shipped with Lion 10.7.2. This means
it wouldn't go backwards past that point. (And you couldn't even run 10.7.0 or
10.7.1 on it, it had to be 10.7.2).

If it was purchased before October (so would be referred to as a MacBookPro
x-inch, Early 2011 or MacBookPro8,2 as well just different processor) then even
if it came or shipped with Lion, it would still go back to it's Snow Leopard to
a point. (they originally shipped with Snow Leopard 10.6.6 so unfortunately an
Original Retail Snow Leopard Disk wouldn't even run on it, as they were only
10.6.3 - sorry Ronni,...). :o)
(I won't go into all that, as it starts to get even more complicated.,..lol).

So depending on the model of her machine and time of purchase (which can be
also gained from the serial number via a limited search), it *may* run Snow
Leopard.
It would be a fairly fiddly job, as to get it running you'd need a special
install of 10.6.6/10.6.8 work around to do it. (It would crash on trying to
boot of a 10.6.3 DVD from memory).

But yes, it is possible.
I did the same with a MacPro that shipped with Lion. Luckily they have been
specced up yet, so even though it shipped with Lion, it was possible to get
Snow Leopard on it. Took a while and a bit of mucking around, but it was
do-able and worked (and runs) well. :)
(Just as we did the same with yours).

Sorry if that's a bit confusing. It's a bit of a grey area with some of those
things.

So if she was going to do it, she'd want to get someone in the consulting field
over there I would think to do it for her. Not just a plug in a DVD and go for
it unfortunately..
On a side note,...I've never been to Melbourne, so she can feel free to send me
a return flight ticket over and some free food and I'll do it for her,...lol
;))

Hope some of that helps. ;)

Kind regards
Daniel

 Hi Diana,

 Short Answer: NO!

As the new MBP came with Lion installed, Snow Leopard will NOT install as
you cannot install an older operating system.
You can always upgrade but not go backwards on a new computer.
