Hi Merv, Yes, you can have as many bootable partitions as will fit on your drive. Format the partitions as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make bootable copies. Hi Merv, Just adding to Carlo’s reply. In order to boot from an Intel based or PPC based Mac, you may need to change the partition map. The bootable partition Map for PPC is (APM) Apple Partition Map which is Apples default. The Intel based Macs require (GUID) “GUID Partition Table to be bootable. Thanks Ronni, Carlo and Bob. From your responses I gather that having made a GUID Partition Table I must then format each partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Have I got it right? Yes Merv, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID Partition Table If you need anymore information I have on my website a PDF I created “How To: Format Partition External Drive for Time Machine”. Even though you will not be using Time Machine to backup to this drive as Time Machine is NOT bootable. After you format and Partition your External Drive you will use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to create bootable backups.
