Re: Problem using iChat

Stephen

I have exactly the same problem, usually get a message saying there is
insufficient bandwidth to do video chat with iChat. All the people I
am video chatting with are on Macs in various countries including
Australia / Tasmania, China, India, England. We now just use Skype
which works every time.

Hi folks,

Myself and someone overseas recently set up iChat to video
conference with each other.
However other than messaging, we do not seem to be able to connect
with each other.

No audio and no video.
It just ticks away for a while and then gives a message (that I
cannot recall)

It does the same thing in either direction.

We have both used Skype for some time so we know we can connect
audio video no probs.

But as he recently went Mac we thought we would give iChat a shot !!

Even checked firewalls and they are both switched off.

Hi Stephen,

Are you both using iChat 4.0.2 in OSX10.5.2?
How are you connecting to the Internet, what Modem/Router?
What settings do you have in iChat Preferences - Audio/Video?
And Quicktime Streaming (in System Preferences)?

Was it an Error 8 in Video Chat invites?
If so check on both Macs - System Preferences Sharing, that Internet
Sharing is NOT on.

iChat's system requirements for some features require a lot of
horsepower.
To find out which features your Mac can handle, choose Video
Connection Doctor, and from the Show pop-up menu, choose Capabilities.
There's a little chart of all iChat features, showing checkmarks for
the ones your Mac can manage.

Also under the Show pop-up menu you can see Error Log.

The Error Log should give you an idea what is stopping the Video chat.

Do you have a Modem/Router which might have a firewall enabled?
If so, you need to open the Ports that iChat uses - 5060, 5190, 5297,
5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403.

The ports need to be open for UDP protocol in all cases and TCP in some.
Apple Document 93208 gives details: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208

If your Router has the Universal Plug n Play (UPnP) setting, use that
as it will dispense with the need to set NAT/Port Forwarding settings.

Cheers,
Ronni
