Hi Neil,

Ok yesterday was a hard day, I probably should not have bothered searching to
find an answer to your query.
It was actually a 'copy paste' from Apple Discussions.

'Game Center' has generated a lot of comments, negative as well as positive.
But, the reality is … Game Center is part of the iOS4.1 Software … we have to
live with it.
I won't use 'Game Center', but realise a lot of people who are avid gamers are
excited, and have been wanting this in an update.
Also the game developers welcome this.

We will soon have it on our iPads as well. iOS 4.2 beta for iPad released to
developers, what's new?

I would suggest you leave feedback for Apple here:

Hi Neil

Although, this doesn't actually get rid of it completely, if you don't want
to see the icons for the things you use, this is another way to do it.

NOTE!!! I haven't tried this, and as it's using some modification code, be
very wary that it could break things. So always back up, and be aware.
(That's just to cover me if anything goes wrong should someone try it,...I'm
just providing the info.) :o)

The iPhone doesn't need to be Jailbroken, which is quite handy.

Worth a read anyway:-

But yes, throwing them into an unwanted folder, tends to be the easiest
way to deal with it. :o)

Re: iPhone app - Game Center ???

2010-09-23 Thread Neil Houghton

Thanks for that Daniel.

I'm still getting to grips with how the iPhone SHOULD work though - so I
think I'll wait a while before I think about changing things too much ;o)

It's quite funny - this is my first mobile phone - the other half had been
nagging for a while if you had a mobile phone, I would have been able to
let you know I was going to be late! - but I decided that if I was going to
have one it would have to be an iPhone and the first iterations didn't
really do it for me - you just KNEW that the next one would be so much
better - so when the iPhone 4 was released, I was finally happy that the
feature set was worth the money.

So, now I've had the phone 4 weeks and I've had lots of fun making up
playlists and transferring music, checking out various apps, deciding which
free case to go for, and generally playing with my new toy.

I have to say it's great fun, however, to date, I've made 1 phone call, sent
one email (a test!), missed one phone call (the other half) received one
real SMS (the other half saying You actually supposed to answer your phone
when it rings. Where are you. plus a couple of Telsta SMSs... so, given all
my data has been over the home wireless network, my $49 cap plan with
Telstra is hardly being maxed out!!!

I dare say that actual phone usage will increase over time ;o)

Ah Neil, now I understand your 'surprise' about 'Game Center' added in Software
on the iPhone.

You have never had a Mobile Phone, so have never experienced all the 'Tools,
icons, and stuff' that are on Mobile Phones.
I always had Nokia mobiles, prior to owning an iPhone, and they had 'stuff' on
them I never wanted or used.
I just hid them as you can do on the iPhone.

Use your iPhone, you will enjoy the experience ;-)

iPhone app - Game Center ???

2010-09-22 Thread Neil Houghton

I'm confused...

A new app has suddenly appeared on my iPhone - it is called Game Centre -
I have not downloaded it and it doesn't appear in my apps section in iTunes
- though I can see it on the iPhone when connected to iTunes.

If I open the app it wants me to sign-in with my Apple ID account - so
presumably it is an Apple app? - but why did it suddenly appear on my
iPhone!

I have absolutely no interest in games (either on my iPhone or Computer) -
so I would like to just delete the app - how do I do that?

Hi Neil,

Andrew is correct.

Game Center
iOS SDK 4 includes the Game Kit APIs that allow you to create apps that will
work with Game Center, Apple's new social gaming network. Your users can invite
friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through auto-matching, track
their achievements, and compare their best scores on a leaderboard.

Oh! A little harsh Ronni ;o)

OK, I had missed that the Game Center was part of the new software, but the
trouble is:

1. I really DID want the new HDR photography - so I had to upgrade for that.
2. In general, sticking with my current software and refraining from any
further upgrades does not seem like a balanced response just because I don't
want Game Center and I have no interest in games on my iPhone - I would miss
out on all the other improvements features ( how many times, when
troubleshooting issues, have you said make sure your software is up to
date)

It¹s no big deal, I have just created an ³obsolete² folder on an additional
apps screen and Game Center is now despatched there together with the
³Weather² app that featured unrealistic weather forecasts (for Albany) from
Yahoo weather (I¹m now using one that uses BOM data) - however, I still
don¹t see why Apple won¹t let me remove apps I don¹t want/need I mean, I
could remove iMovie or Garageband from my iMac if I really wanted to!

Cheers

 I'm confused...

A new app has suddenly appeared on my iPhone - it is called Game Centre -
I have not downloaded it and it doesn't appear in my apps section in iTunes
 - though I can see it on the iPhone when connected to iTunes.

If I open the app it wants me to sign-in with my Apple ID account - so
presumably it is an Apple app? - but why did it suddenly appear on my
 iPhone!

I have absolutely no interest in games (either on my iPhone or Computer) -
so I would like to just delete the app - how do I do that?

 Cheers

Re: iPhone app - Game Center ???

2010-09-22 Thread Peter Meyer

Yes the software update (iOS4.1) was certainly required if you wanted apps on
your iPhone 3G or 3GS to run again at a reasonable speed after the iOS 4
upgrade.
Admittedly there were hacks suggested to solve the slowing problem just prior
to release of the update but they seemed to be uncertain and unverified.
