Ima Hogg

2006-07-12 Thread DeLayne E Rand
The banker in the town where I grew up, had a cousin named Ima Hogg. But they
pronounced it with a long 'o' , like hoag. The joke was 'where's your brother
'Hesa'?

Doors and walls

2006-07-12 Thread Fgfrankling
Through this discussion of doors and such, I was reminded of the time Barney
was locked in the bank vault. I think in freeing himself he broke through
the bank's wall and into the beauty shop... right? And without an appointment
mind you !

Rain

2006-07-12 Thread Ruth Stanley
Rain in Mayberry has often been the subject on here, so I hope y'all don't mind
me telling that today a 114 year record of no measurable rain on July 12th, in
Salem Oregon just was broken. Just like an article one would expect in a
Mayberry news paper, it appeared on the front page. Salem was also the only
city in Oregon to have this distinction. Oh well, it is still the State
Capitol. Actually I live in Keizer which which was established in the 1980s,
due to the fact that we did not want to be annexed by Salem. We're an
independent bunch of folks, that's what makes Mayberry, oops I meant Keizer so
great..

I always thought it was funny that the governor stopped in Mayberry to
shake Barney's hand and tell
him good job, but He still didn't pay the ticket while he was there.

Re: Mysterious doors

2006-07-12 Thread rhadorn2
While we are on the subject of mystery doors that lead to ??. How about the one
in Andy and Helen's redecorated bedroom that appears in episode 125, The
Rumor?

It looks like it may lead to an outside porch but since this room is upstairs
it would have to be a deck or add-on and I don't recall seeing any such
structure in any of the exterior shots of the house.

Hoggs

2006-07-12 Thread dudleygl
By the way, being from Texas, I did mention before that I'm a Texan right?
Anyway, we're acquainted with the name Ima Hogg. She's old Governor Hogg's
daughter and possibly they're some distant kin to Hog and Hogette Winslow.
There's still people around here who will swear that Ima had a twin sister
named
Yura, but that ain't true. After all, who'd name their kid Yura Hogg?
Sorry for the chit chat, I just hate normal conversation.

Nathan Tibbs

2006-07-12 Thread Paul Mulik
Good observations, Sam. The ladies do say from the beginning that they are
positive that the direct descendant of Nathan Tibbs lives in Mayberry or a
nearby town, but how they figured this out remains a mystery. Think about
it: genealogists ALWAYS start with the known present, and work back into the
unknown past. How did these ladies come to their conclusion anyway? What
did they do, uncover an old letter that reads Hello, my name is Nathan
Tibbs, and 185 years from now, I will have exactly one living descendant,
and he will live in or near the town of Mayberry? It's a great episode,
but you have to admit, the premise is ludicrous. The women also made
another obvious error: Otis has at least one brother (Ralph Campbell), and
they insisted all along that Tibbs had only one living descendant.

As far part 2 of your question: Winken told Blinken, Blinken told Nod, Nod
told Barney, and Barney told Mayor Pike.

--Paul

P.S. Ima Hogg (1882-1975) was a real person, the daughter of the Texas
governor James Big Jim Hogg, but there was never a Ura Hogg, that part of
the tale is an urban legend. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ima_Hogg

Was watching A Plaque for Mayberry and it struck me
that, when Mayor Pike hands over the town records, he
calls for a meeting on Wednesday to announce who the
descendant of Nathan Tibbs is even though a] the
ladies don't yet know for sure if he has any living
descendants and 2] how could he know whether they
would have the answer by Wedneday or not?

There was a Mayberry Moment in my local paper the other day. On the same page
there was an article about a town on the east coast that had a Civil War cannon
that the town council sold. Then right below was a picture of some men in a
town near me who helped rebuild the bandstand for the town park.
