RE: Turn UP the AC

2011-05-09 Thread Hughes, Clyde L. (HSC)
Hello Fellow Mayberrians,

I appreciate the AC posts. I think you hit it on the head, Mike. I, too,
think that Andy was probably referring to the *intensity* of the AC, rather
than the temperature. If I said we need more AC, that might also be
expressed as turn the AC up as in *increasing* it. Those older AC units had
those switches, not to mention bigger wires, so it was more of a manual
(Manuel?) procedure.
I wonder if Emmett might know more about that? Did he work on AC's?

Over and Under,
Clyde Barn

Hi Gang -

Nice to see all the posts about Mayberry and TAGS and keeping on topic of the
bulletin board.

About air conditioning, when I heard the comment on the bowling episode about
turning UP the air conditioning I always considered it as in turning a switch
on the unit from perhaps low or medium to High. In those days the
units had switches more than they had thermostats like we do these days with
our central air, so turning it UP simply meant going to a stronger setting.
If they had used bigger wires maybe the power wouldn't have gone off on
Howard's 300 game, lol.

Desilu Air Conditioning

2011-05-09 Thread BRIAN RODAHAVER
Construction of the Desilu-Cahuenga Studios commenced in May 1946. By the
time
TAGS began filming in 1960, I'm sure the air conditioning was adequate. Today,
now known as RED STUDIOS, the first item they list on their website concerning
all their stages is that they are fully air-conditioned.

re: Heating in Mayberry

2011-05-09 Thread PLV
Was anything said on TAGS about heating homes and businesses? I'm sure
they must have had furnaces, for when Andy and Aunt Bee considered buying
the new house, the seller's son spilled the beans and told them that the
crack in the furnace was getting bigger every day.

And don't forget about the furnace in the basement of the courthouse where
Barney sent inept Newton Munroe to clean the flue. Flue? What's a flue?

Heating system

2011-05-09 Thread tubist
It seems the folks in Mayberry County couldn't make up their mind what sort of
heating system the courthouse should have. As has been mentioned, in certain
episodes there is a large gas heater in the corner.

However, when Barney industriously cleans the room in preparation for Gentleman
Dan Caldwell's visit, Andy remarks This place ain't been so clean since the
boiler busted and flooded the place, which seems to imply that they once had
steam radiators or some such.

Further, when Barney puts Newton Monroe to work, he makes him go to the
basement (which we never see) to clean the furnace, which is said to have a
flue. From the huge cloud of black smoke that billows up soon afterward, I
would guess there was a coal-burning furnace down there.

In an earlier episode, I think I remember seeing a radiator sitting in the spot
where the furnace heater grate came to be located in the Newton Munroe episode.
But I can't remember which earlier episode.

Jury Duty

2011-05-09 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. Last summer I received a juror summons that would have
conflicted with our trip to Mayberry Days in September. Now I don't know if it
was the Mayberry Deputy, the town clerk Howard Sprague or maybe even the count
that intervened, but I managed to wrangle out of that week, so it is strange.
Well, this week I'm paying it back. Been in the courthouse all day today and
gotta' go back tomorrow. I don't mind doing my civic duty as long as it doesn't
interfere with my Mayberry activities.

BTW, there are two jurors with the last name Taylor.

Re: WBMUTBB Digests - Turning up the AC

2011-05-09 Thread Ron McLendon

I believe Clyde Barn got it extry-special right as rain by explaining that
turning up the AC meant increasing the intensity. I always thought turning
something up meant increasing the function it is/was designed to do. Now
that we have that settled, I would like to point out other phrases and such
that may or may not have been used in Mayberry. We all use them today, I'm
sure. For example, My dog is a little big and he's pretty ugly, but I love
him just the same. Can anyone recall any such phrases or descriptions,
whether in real life or in Mayberry?
