Winning The Oscar
Vic Friskey asked about people on TAGS who won an Oscar after Andy went off the air. Of course there was Jack Nicholson, who won 3 Oscars. One Flew Over The Cucoo's Nest, Terms of Endearments, and As Good As It Gets. Then Opie won an Oscar for directing the movie A Beautiful Mind. There are probably more, but those two leap to mind. As for actors who appeared in Oscar winning movies, that question is a little fuzzy. Do you mean actors who appeared in movies which won the Oscar for Best Picture, or for people who appeared in movies that won an Oscar of any kind. If you are speaking of actors who appeared in movies that won an Oscar for Best Picture, then Jack Nicholson was in One Flew Over The Cucoo's Nest which won best picture. And then Ron Howard had a small scene in the picture A Beautiful Mind which he direcsted. No one else leaps to mind immediately. If you are speaking of actors on TAGS who appeared in any Oscar winning picture, there were dozens. Briscoe Darling was in The Alamo and Bonnie and Clyde. Mr. Frisby was in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. Clara Edwards was in Rosemary's Baby. Emma Brand was in I'll Cry Tomorrow. Howard Hessman was in Shampoo. Ken Lynch was in Days of Wine and Roses. Orville Hendricks - The Butter and Egg Man. I certainly was never in any Oscar pictures. Because I was an OTR trucker for 20 years including the time this movie came out and subsequently made it to TV..I was never able to see it before now..Lo and Behold..in the scene where Jack is rescuing Rose from jumping overboard the security guards show up and I couldn't believe who was with them..None other than Mayberry's Malcolm Merriwether..as Col. Archibald Gracie...? That got me to thinking and I put a two gallon galvanized bucket on my head to helpHey, It works...The movie won 11 Oscars and I got to thinking of all the movie stars who appeared on TAGS. ? ?With the bucket still on my head I thought of two movie stars who won Movie Oscars after appearing on TAGs...Can you name them ??? ? There were also four other actors on TAGS who appeared in Oscar winning movies...Can you name them ?? ? After all that thinking I had to get the bucket off my head, so there might be more to this than i know... ? RE: Oscar Winning
I'll try this oneJack Nicholson is one. I still have my bucket on trying to think of the other one. I really, really racked my brain on this one before I suddenly went duh! The other one: 2001 Best Director Ron Howard. I thought of Ron Howard but Vic's statement was movie stars and Ron was not a movie star...he was a director. From Vic's email: ?With the bucket still on my head I thought of two movie stars who won Movie Oscars after appearing on TAGs...Can you name them ??? Maybe I'm splitting hairs!!! I'm sure this topic could even explode if it were opened up to nominees who didn't win. Right off the top of my head I can think of one in particular: Buddy Ebsen, who appeared as Opie's hobo friend right about the time his Oscar-nominated role in Breakfast at Tiffany's was entertaining movie audiences. Someone had mentioned former TAGS members who were in other movies. I know who Howard Hesseman is, and that he later appeared on WKRP in Cincinnati, but in which episode of TAGS did he appear? TAGS/Oscar winner
I thought that maybe The Meathead (Rob Reiner) may have won an Oscar. He's won an emmy, and has been nominated for an Academy and Golden Globe award, but never won an Oscar for his acting, writing, producing, or directing. I believe he may have been part of a picture or 2 that won Oscars, like Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, or my all time favorite This is Spinal Tap. Does directing, producing, acting, or writing for a movie that wins best picture count? Does anyone else know that Rob Reiner co-wrote the first episode of Happy Days? The first year of that series was my favorite, before they over did it with the Fonz, and got a live studio audience. Kind of like the way that an unnamed show declined when it went to color..(I'm referring to Lost in Space, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, or I Dream of Jeannie, of course). What was the name of the character Rob Reiner played on that colorized episode of TAGS? Ken's award
Hi all, I was happy to hear that Ken won that award in the parade for comedy. Ken, you mentioned that you didn't know how you won, unless it was due to the way your wife was driving the squad car. Might it have been due to you 'hanging your head out the window, like a dog'? Hmm, just a thought.
