Another double-alumni sighting
I was watching "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers", a 1956 sci-fi film on MeTV, for a little while the other day. In just a few minutes, there was Mr. Maxwell, from "Mayberry On Record", who played the lead role as a scientist trying to fight the UFO's. Then there was a general at the conference table who I thought might've been on TAGS but I couldn't place him - until I looked him up on IMDB. Turns out, he was character actor Thomas Henry, who played the guy who came to repossess Jim Lindsey's car while Jim was at Andy's house for dinner, in "The Guitar Player Returns". TAGS alumni even on Svengoolie! JOE from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Double-alumni sighting on M.A.S.H. - and another in a classic movie
Watching a Season 2 episode of M.A.S.H. ("The Trial of Henry Blake"), there was Clara Edwards, playing a nurse running a clinic in Korea. And the guy playing the general in charge of the court-martial looked familiar from TAGS too, so I looked him up: Robert Simon, who played Mr. Crawford, the drug store owner, in "Opie's Drugstore Job". A couple days earlier, I watched the 1956 movie "Patterns" on TCM, about the ruthless world of corporate board rooms. The nasty, mean villain of the movie was Everett Sloane, known to TAGS fans as mean old Jubal Foster in "The Keeper of the Flame". The casting director for TAGS must've seen that movie when thinking about who to cast as "Jubal". JOE from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Another double alumni sighting
Just finished watching a very good episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and there was Doris Packer (Mrs. Wiley), playing basically the same role she did in TAGS one year later - a hostess at a party (although a lot fancier one than the one in Mayberry). But then there was another familiar face from TAGS - Everett Sloane, who played a famous, successful poet, 3 years after he played the moonshining Jubal Foster who burned his own barn down on TAGS. Another really good character actor. JOE from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Double First Season/Double Alumni Sighting
The other day, I was watching an episode of "Perry Mason" from Season 1, and immediately recognized an alumni from Season 1 of TAGS: William Schallert a/k/a "Quiet Sam". In Perry Mason, he played an assistant to a wealthy, nasty guy and he ended up in trouble for being an accomplice to murder - quite a different role from his character in TAGS. But there was an older woman in the Perry Mason episode. playing a housekeeper to that same rich guy, who looked awfully familiar, so I looked her up. Turns out she was Lillian Bronson, the woman behind the scenes in Season 1's "The Beauty Contest" who Andy ended up giving the crown to at the end. Turns out she was born and raised in Lockport, NY, about 22 miles from where I live. JOE from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

On "The Rifleman" today, I saw Ellen Corby (Hubcaps Lesch) and Chubby Johnson (Mr. Carter) as a married couple (Walt and Mrs. Avery) who had moved to Northfork to live down the bad name of their outlaw son. Chubby Johnson's smile was so big and toothy! Happy early Father's Day to all the Dads, Ron **Barn McLendon LaVergne, TN ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
A surprise double-alumni sighting
Well, last night on TCM I finally watched the classic movie "Niagara". It was shot in and around my hometown when I was a toddler, and was the movie that launched Marilyn Monroe into super star status, but I've never actually seen it. I was pleasantly surprised to see 2 TAGS alumni in it: one of the main characters was played by Max Showalter, who used to go by his stage name of Casey Adams when he played the guy Andy sold the old cannon to in "The Horse Trader" in Season 1. Then, toward the end of the movie, there was Will Wright a/k/a the original Ben Weaver, playing a guy who had a small marina near the Falls. Ever though he was 7 or 8 years younger than he was in TAGS, he looked about the same. Always nice to find TAGS alumni everywhere. Last night in an especially creepy "Alfred Hitchcock Hour" episode ("The Jar"), George Lindsey and James Best appeared together in a couple of the scenes. George played a mentally-challenged man, and was excellent in that role. James had a smaller role as the handsome boyfriend of a married woman. The episode was made in 1964, right at the height of TAGS popularity. Joe Suszczynski Grand Island, NY ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Last night while watching "The Rifleman", I was pleasured to see Chubby Johnson (Mr. Carter) and Ellen Corby (Hubcaps Lesh) appear as husband and wife in the episode "The Spoiler". They were an older couple that moved to North Fork under assumed names because their son was a known notorious gunfighter and killer. Notably, Mr. Johnson appeared with his partial in place. I'm accustomed to seeing him with those bottom teeth missing, like it was his trademark. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6425/chubbyjohnsonspoiler.jpg Ron **Barn McLendon LaVergne, TN ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

While recently watching a couple of episodes of Hogan's Heroes, I spotted a couple of TAGS alumni, one in each episode. Joyce Jameson (Skippy of the fun girls) appeared as a German girl who lived in an apartment that shared a back wall with the vault of a German bank. Hogan kept her busy with alcohol, while his men cut through her apartment wall to be able to access the entrance to the vault. In the other episode, Hal Smith (Otis Campbell) was the owner of a cannon manufacturing plant. Hogan arranged to get his men work in the factory and by the time the episode ended, so did the cannon factory. Wednesday's Rifleman episodes each had TAGS alumni. In the first one, Aunt Bee's medicine man (John Dehner) appeared as a hired killer. I was watching an episode of Death Valley Days today, and the show concerned Black Jack Pershing. It was about an incident in the early life of the famous general.Anyway, there were 2 TAGS alumni in the show.Mr. Foley was the commanding officer of the fort, and the bad guy was played by Bing Russell.A lot of people do not remember Bing Russell, but he was the explosive expert that Andy called in when they had the loaded goat.Bing Russell was also the father of the famous Kirk Russell. Late Sunday night, on MeTV, there was an episode of Peter Gunn that had two of the main characters from TAGS in it.First Clara Edwards was the manager of an apartment complex, who chewed gum and flirted with Peter Gunn. Yesterday, I surfed into a rerun episode of Dragnet 1970 and found John Masters (Olan Soule) as a Los Angeles County Court judge and Miz Larch (Maudie Prickett) as a testifying witness, wearing a really dreadful hat that the Mayberry matrons would probably have drooled over! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

TAGS fans, Saw two TAGS alumni on an episode of The Rockford Files yesterday. Arlene Galonka (Millie) was there, playing a Hollywood agent. Still beautiful, but a little older. The other alumni was a bigger surprise, though. Jim was in a hotel room and, hanging on the wall, was a print of the painting that hangs over the Taylor's fireplace. I wonder if there's any chance it was the exact same prop (that someone found in a stock room a decade after it last showed up in Mayberry)? If you want to see a ton of TAGS alumni, watch the Hitchcock classic, North by Northwest. Must have been more than a dozen of them.
