Oscars

2018-03-05 Thread Margaret Bentle
Watched the Oscars Sunday night.

The In Memoriam did not include everybody.
The ones I noticed were TAGS people: Rance Howard, Don Rickles and Harry
Dean Stanton - proprietor in "Howard's New Life".

Another actor Wes Studi was talking about war films and that he had been in
the military. No he never was on TAGS, but his father-in-law was Jack
Albertson who played Bradford Taylor. Mr. Albertson's daughter Maura Dhu
Studi is married to Wes Studi.

More Oscars

2013-06-19 Thread Dan Goodwin
My question about Oscars was a little tricky when I said I knew of 4 Oscars.
That was true, just that 3 of them belonged to Jack Nicholson and 1 to
George Kennedy. Then Victor came up with Jack Albertson and Ron Howard.

So now we've got a total of 6 Oscars by 4 actors. Have we missed any?

This may have been discussed before but, being old, I don't remember it.
How many folks who appeared on TAGS have won Academy Awards in their
careers? I can think of 4 Oscars won by TAGS alumni. Anybody think of any
more?

Re: the Oscars

2013-03-05 Thread Gretchen Offord [SGLC]

I, too, was disappointed with this year's Academy Awards show, in that the
producers decided to 'go after' the
younger crowd, thus bringing in a popular (it is believed) comic to host the
show.

And the omission of several persons from the In Memoriam segment was a
travesty, yet those omissions seem
to happen every year.

I
was expecting much of what I heard, and immediately went to the Oscars
website and left a comment about it. It is when we speak up for
things that those in charge can make changes for the better of all.

The Academy Awards have been the classy elegant awards show over its duration,
something I've seen
true in the times I've watched it over the past 45 years. Even when Bob Hope
hosted, though his comments were
often double entendres, it was still classy and elegant.

What is sad
is the presumed preference for off color, grade school, even bathroom humor
thus the promoting such
comedy as entertaining. Entertainment can be clean to be enjoyable.

It would seem that the producers brought in numerous A list award winners,
including Barbra to sing, in order
to compensate for the host's rather inane comments.

Those producers must remember several things: the academy is mostly older folks
not young people, excessive
focus on apparel demeans the elegance of the show, young people can find value
in something that is
different if given the opportunity, and though 'family guy' has a large
following it doesn't represent the majority
of viewers.

Last year's Grammy awards (a show typically off color) did honor Whitney, her
sudden death being a tragedy in
that recovery didn't help her, and her loved ones felt that grief more so as
they wondered if they could have done more
to save her. Perhaps she
was a warning to those in that industry that life is short, treat it kindly or
it will be gone.
(Apparently addiction was a genetic factor for her so her ability to overcome
it was difficult).

The world has changed much, and entertainment is most reflective of it, 'art
imitating life' or 'life imitating art'?
This year as last movies were recognized that were based on actual persons or
events, which is encouraging rather
than movies about fluff. Ron Howard's upcoming movie 'Rush' should be an
excellent one based upon the information
he's released about it via his twitter account.

particular: Buddy Ebsen, who appeared as Opie's hobo friend right about the

Oscar-nominated role in Breakfast at Tiffany's was entertaining movie

RE: Omission of names at Oscars

2006-03-07 Thread Anthony Sizemore

I found a section on the Academy Awards web site that recognizes the artists
that have died.
It appears that the memoriam is updated and artists recognized between the
dates Feb. 1st through Jan. 31st of the next year.
So this would explain why some of the actors were there that had just died
this year, and why Don Knotts and the others were not.
I am already looking forward to, and yet dreading the reminder that he is
gone, of Mr. Knotts career being acknowledged.

Big ain't the word for it.

Omission of names at Oscars

2006-03-07 Thread Anthony Sizemore

Well, I'll buy the time constraint theory for leaving out Don Knotts in the
memoriam segment. After all, where would Hollywood find any talented people
at the last minute to pull off such a spectacular project? Wait, we're
talking Hollywood film makers, so I ain't buying that either.
As for the 2005 theory; when did Shelly Winters and Chris Penn die? 2006.
And just who is Chris Penn?
I know there's nothing that can be done since it's over, and maybe they'll
have them in next year's show, but that's a long way off.
Don deserved better.
And that's all I got to say about that.

The Oscars and Our Deputy

2006-03-06 Thread Hinesley, Tim
The question was asked...

Did I miss it? During the Academy Awards program I watched all the names
of the fine talents that left us this past year, and I didn't see Dennis
Weaver, Darren McGavin or Don Knotts.

The website for the Oscars memorialized all actors and actresses who
died in 2005. Our beloved deputy will be recognized next year.

Omission of names at Oscars

2006-03-06 Thread Ruth Stanley
This is in respose to Andge in Bethlehem Ga. I think that because Don, Dennis,
Darren died so recently that there wasn't time for them to be included in the
tribute. It probably was put together some time ago because they have to have
all the segments put together alloted for in the given time period. Now if it
is ommitted next year rest assured there will be some very angry people.
