In my small hometown (Nowata, OK) as a child, we could still pick-up the
receiver to speak to the operator. But, as dial phones came around, there was
a payphone on the outside wall of the phone company. It had a dial, a
change-slot, everything. When you picked up the receiver, before you could
deposit your dime or dial a number, the operator came on to connect you. I
guess it was a true transitional time in telephone technology!
