mutism

2010-05-26 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. I agree with Ken on this one. On hearing of Mr. Schwump
and selective mutism. When you've been married as long as I have, you develop
what is known as selective hearing. When I'm called for supper, seems I hear
just fine. But when I'm called to take out the trash or do the dishes, then
something is lost. I blame it on years of working in a noisy environment, but
my wife says that excuse just don't wash. Selective hearing, selective mutism,
call it what you will. It's saved me from many an ugly exchange.

Ken,
Barney should have used selective mutism
when he told Gomer he had Thelma Lou in
his back pocket.

Mr Schwump and Mutism

2010-05-23 Thread Ken Anderson
I did some research this weekend about people who cannot speak. According
to my sources in the Learn a Month Magazine, and they are goood sources,
many adults who suffer from mutism experienced some form of emotional trauma
during childhood. So I am speculating that this was happened to our beloved
Mr. Schwump. Probably what happened was when ever the kids heard his last
name of Schwump they would tease him. Then perhaps he had a stuttering
problem back then and whenever he was asked to read aloud or speak in class
the kids would again tease him, and perhaps even his teacher would humiliate
him in some way. So he developed what is known as selective mutism. I am
speaking from experience as I use to suffer from an extreme case of fear of
public speaking. Whenever I was asked to say something in front of a group
of people I would get so scared I would wet my pants and then I was so
terribly embarrassed it would bother me for weeks. I finally saw a
therapist and after years of treatment I finally overcame my problem. Oh I
still wet myself when I speak in front of groups, but it no longer
embarrasses me.

Fascinating you should mention this, Ken. There was a character on the
daytime soap opera Search for Tomorrow in the 1950s who suffered from this
very thing for this very reason. The actor who played him: a then-unknown
Don Knotts.

Selective Mutism and Mr. Schwump - Part 2

2010-05-23 Thread Ken Anderson
You don't question the omen of selective mutism. It comes in mighty handy
at home. I use it to my advantage all the time. Like when my wife asks,
Does this dress make me look fat or when she says Do I look as good as
when we first got married? or Am I as good a cook as your mother? Yes
sir, a lot can be said for selective mutism. Good old Mr. Schwump really
knew what he was doing when he just sat there with that silly grin on his
face. Barney could have used that himself a few times. It would have saved
him a lot grief, like when Thelma Lou asked him about Melissa or when he
told the guy at the truck stop that he didn't appreciate being called a
squirt or when he bragged to that college kid about Andy's faults as
sheriff. It works on the same principal as selective hearing.

Like the time my wife was complaining about her body. She said to me, Look
at this double chin, look at my big hind end, look at my varicose veins and
all my gray hair and wrinkles. Just tell me one part of my body that is
good. Well, I said, There sure isn't anything wrong with your eyes.
I definitely should have done a Mr. Schwump that time.

Wonder what Leon's problem was? Maybe he had a peanut allergy and all those
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches gave him swollen vocal cords. Although
he did speak in one of the commercials.
