Microsoft fighting dirty again :-)

P.S. Apparently, after an outcry from the Internet community, Microsoft did
mend their ways, at least for now.

[wdvltalk] SCR videos

2003-02-14 Thread Jan Major
Hi Joseph,

Thanks for letting me know about the Meta tags. Why didn't
Dreamweaver show that there were duplicate tags? I deleted them,
and uploaded correct page, but don't see any difference.

I've been surfing through Microsoft's windows media section
to see if they have something there that might help. So far,
nothing.

I have tried putting other movies first, changed them all
around, still with the same results.

My attitude about this is very bad, with feeling sick and all
the problems with the videos I'm ready to send a bad letter to
Microsoft.

I am going to try the code that Bankei pointed me to yesterday.
If that doesn't work, I have to leave this problem for now. My
clients are being very good about this.

Oh, Microsoft, Oh, Microsoft
I want to blow your top off!

Jan,

I wasn't paying attention, was I? My mind was dwelling on
interaction, where a small fault in one thing becomes maximised by a
small fault in another. So I'm thinking some weakness in the video
code and some glitch in Bill's IE 6.0 (which would surprise no one).

Would it give a temporary solution to put very short videos (small
file size) as nos 1 and 7, thus letting the 5 important ones run in
the middle?

I have just visited the site. This report may help. IE 5.5.
W98SE. Daddy, Tiger and Sam links OK, small window comes up, activity
of download (no video show ?IE 5.5?); interesting bits --TRex link
OK but no window, no activity; Batman no link ie the cursor finger
did not point.

The Batman link failure seems weird since the tags are there same
as for the other four; and trex seems to be written up identically as
well. Might it be a problem on the server disk? Have you tried a
copy of the page under another name so it sits on another part of the
disc?

Oh. One other point is there a reason for the meta tags to be repeated?
And could that have any effect?

HTH (more than my last anyway!)

[wdvltalk] Re: [OT] Justifying training expenses

2003-02-14 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
We're using some asp.net though not a lot at this point only for clients who
will benefit in terms of faster development time OR easier future
maintenance. Web development is getting to be a smaller percentage of our
business as opposed to some of the custom browser based apps we are doing.
Wish we were doing more but then I'd have to actually come to grips with
Visual Studio.NET to do code behind and for some reason that IDE is like oil
and water for me.

I'm also getting wildly varying reports about the .NET adoption rate. A
local training shop says that outside of two local firms that have
international interests, the .NET adoption rate is very slow here (central
U.S.). In fact they only get a trickle of developers for their .NET
classes. To listen to the MS hype I'd think everyone except me is already
well-studied in .NET and successfully using it to deploy galaxy-wide killer
app solutions.

yeah, DISTINCT is a whole nother thread

DISTINCT is very often misused

besides, GROUP BY is more useful

well, congrats on getting it running, now i don't have to think ;o)

by the way, why are you converting Purchase_Date to smalldatetime?

what is it, a character field? yikes

I could be wrong, but I don't think DISTINCT would work here, as if there
are several tickets related to the individual then each counts as a distinct
record.

However I have finally got it working in the way I want by doing the
following:

group by [all selected fields], then adding into the selection list:
MIN(convert(smalldatetime, Purchase_Date))

Which returns the individual, and the earliest valid ticket they have that
meets the criteria.

Based on the suggestions of the list I've got the report returning
everything as I want it and compiling in a fraction of the time it used to.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, you wonderful people :-D

[wdvltalk] Re: [OT] Justifying training expenses

2003-02-14 Thread Furry, Tim
Tim, previously:

>your company (ROI, etc.)? I'm getting close to taking the big .NET
>step, and would welcome information both on justification of training
>and specific .NET-related training experiences.

David replied:
I will be surprised if your employer does not have periods of paid
training
during each working year. This is so common now that it might be
worthwhile talking to HR to find out if such a policy exists, even if it

isn't well known.

There used to be a fear that, if companies trained people, they would
leave. Now, people tend to leave if they can't get regular training,
especially in the ICT area.

I should have answered this properly. There is no sound basis for
calculating ROI on training. It is just an expense, without any real
possibility of a return. This is especially true in those companies
that
allow their employees to have 'shot-in-the-dark' training, where an
employee will book training that is not directly related to their
current work.

Tim:
And I should have given a little more information. The company does in
fact provide for one week per year of paid training for me...except it's
rather assumed that I will spend it at TechEd every year (which I don't
mind at all and I think is a good investment on their part). I am the
first/only programmer this company has hired so they don't really have a
set policy.

After doing quite a bit of online research and talking to people from
two national training centers, I'd have to agree with your statement
that there is no sound basis for calculating ROI on training - in fact,
the gentleman from Wintellect is in the process of trying to figure out
how to do it at all. Most of the problem is that a calculated ROI
depends on thorough assessments of both before and after the training,
and neither one is performed in the real developer world...it's expected
to be a "cost of doing business" expense instead.

My conclusion at this time is that I can't justify the expense for
now...the standard tools I've been using will suffice for the next year.
I'm aware of the tendency for people to leave if not regularly trained;
the lack of training is perceived by the developer as a lack of interest
in their professional development. I'm feeling the same thing, although
I'm aware that part of the problem is the tight economy.

I'm also getting wildly varying reports about the .NET adoption rate. A
local training shop says that outside of two local firms that have
international interests, the .NET adoption rate is very slow here
(central U.S.). In fact they only get a trickle of developers for their

already well-studied in .NET and successfully using it to deploy
galaxy-wide killer app solutions.

On Friday, February 14, 2003 at 11:54, jac wrote:

j> Sorry Darren what are "error resume next's" ?

when you are trying to trap errors in vb you can wrap the code that is
likely to cause an error in an 'on error resume next' and 'on error goto
0'. this stops the error from crashing your code allowing you to handle
things a bit more gracefully.

so you'd have:

on error resume next ' ignores any error from now on
  some code here
on error goto 0' any error will now be shown

unfortunately with asp being a bit loose in how it deals with functions and
subs, turning error trapping off and forgetting to reset at the end of the
method can affect everything below it in other functions. this gets worse
if you're handling errors in an included file and forget to reset the error
trapping! :>

the on error resume next is very useful around things like database
routines or things like file uploads where errors are common. the error
can then be handled and a more helpful message shown. but it creates havoc
when you're trying to debug something as the error doesn't show up/shows up
at the wrong line!
