[wdvltalk] RE: [OT] freezing in MySQL

2004-06-04 Thread Smile-Poet
Not so  'Aha...'

Still freezing.I have removed all the tables except the controlling
'mysql'.Do I need to reinstall the whole bundle of progams (Easyphp with
Apache, MySQL and PHP)?Or just MySQL. Or is there another answer?

If, with phpMyAdmin, I open a database I can, variably, open none, one, two,
or three tables; but the next table starts to show a limping attempt and
then freezes. I can only get back into the databases by restarting the
machine.

Programs outside the local server do not appear to be affected The local
website, Blog and ghostshop all appear to be running (though now moaning
about the lack of databases).

[wdvltalk] RE: SharePoint as an intranet

2004-06-04 Thread Furry, Tim
Howard and ravenstudio2, thanks for your comments. I've used STS before
as collaboration software and was pretty happy with it in that mode, but
I agree that it just doesn't seem suited for informational sites.

Sean, I know it's expensive and overkill. :-) Since I'm growing wiser
with age, I'm not commenting further at this point on that particular
detail. :-) :-) But thanks a bunch for the CM links, I'll be looking
at them today. I've hardwired a website for content management on our
current site that feeds a database but am looking for other ideas as
well.

Will - I'm mailing you offlist. Thanks for the info.

Aha...!

drew,

In the course of preparing and gingerly testing what froze and what didn't I
discovered windows was opening in diagnostic mode (I did nothing, guv,
honest).Having allowed myself to be bullied back into loading all
drivers, etc, MySQL appears to be working perfectly.

Well, at least I have finally backed up the tables!

[wdvltalk] Re: Object and embed problems

2004-06-04 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Paul:

Additionally, if your friend wants to be really swish he could write his own
DTD for his XHTML pages making all invalid markup valid again!!

Got that idea from the discussion board on that "Flash Satay" article and
could well be a viable route to take if you don't fancy ripping out the
existing Flash embed markup...

[wdvltalk] Re: Object and embed problems

2004-06-04 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Hi Paul

The problem you're facing is that the syntax for used for the Flash
player (and pretty much everything else that uses the &
pairing) is not XHTML compliant and will never validate.

Have a look at this article on ALA:
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/flashsatay/

If your friend is 100% sure on being XHTML compliant on his Flash page then
have a read of that article (there are issues though).

IMO, although the code needed to embed a Flash player in a page is a
monster, it's not necessary to be XHTML compliant here - if you've only got
the Flash movie on that page then you haven't got any semantics or
structure/presentation issues to worry about, whereas if you've got a lot
more content in addition to the Flash movie (see Macromedia's site for an
example of this) then as long as your content is fully compliant then you'll
be OK in rendering, semantics, parsing, etc anyway.

The "Flash Satay" is a good one though so read on.

[wdvltalk] Object and embed problems

2004-06-04 Thread Paul Larue
Hi List,
A friend of mine works on MAC and needs to create pages that are XHTML
compliant. I told him to use the w3c.org xhtml validator to make sure
that his pages are ok.

He has the following code

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflas
h.cab#version=6,0,29,0"
width="191"
height="118" hspace="0" vspace="0"
align="top"
>

http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer";
bgcolor="#FF">

When run through the validator, it says error at line 35 (which is line
at which object tag starts). It says that src is not a valid attribute.

If I comment the object element, everything works fine. It validates and
the flash shows on my IE6/XP. It still validates on his side
(fortunatelty :) but the flash doesn't render on his IE5.5/MacOSX

Any hints, I'm looking on the microsoft web site to see if there's any
limitation of IE5.5 for MacOSX on that issue.

Thanks

Paul

[wdvltalk] Chasing a US invoice from the UK

2004-06-04 Thread Jon Haworth
Hi list,

I'm in need of some advice, particularly from US-based listees.

The IT support company in which I'm a partner recently did some work for a
US-based server manufacturer (one of their UK customers needed a motherboard
replacement, and as the manufacturer doesn't have any UK staff themselves we
did it on their behalf).

It was a quick job and as such a small invoice - the equivalent of about
$400 - but it's been outstanding for some time, they haven't paid it yet,
and they're not responding to our emails :-(

Can anyone suggest any reasonably pain-free methods we could use to recover
this? If they were in the UK we'd take them to a small claims court but it
seems unlikely that it would be worth the effort to use the US equivalent.

Any ideas, either on- or off-list, would be much appreciated!

Cheers
Jon
