This seems odd. I had hoped we would get the updated version with a bit

There is the Change System, Version or Language. I think that only one
version should be given as default. But if another link should be given,
I don't know, nor what terms they would be looking for. Firefox have a
ESR ( http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/ ) but don't
link it from the main download page (
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/ ). Well, actually they do,
below the Aurora/Beta links, not that prominent.

- The words You need to download and install these files in order:

preferred and the third optional.
Maybe: Download and install these files in order (2nd and 3rd are
optional)
The buttons are labeled with a short description (Translated user
interface and LibreOffice built-in help) which was intended as a way
of indicating to the user what they where getting (not much sense in
saying something is optional, if you don't tell them what it is god for)
and thus that it as optional. But it could of course say (Optional)
explicitly on the button, or perhaps just say (Required) on the main
download.

- Could the text base installer be confusing, for people knowing that
base as component? Maybe Main installer ?

This has been changed in github.

- The note at the bottom of the current page, Other way to download
LibreOffice, the productivity suite does that make sense, or is it
redundant?
Yes, that link is redundant. The new download page actually give access
to more downloads that the current, and as explained in the initial
mail, I tried to make sure that every file was available through the new
interface. The other way-link just expanded the non-javascript
version which was used as a data-store for the javascript-version.

Are we convinced that this really is not needed?

No - as it is a first shot at it... Having the notes/hints regarding
the audience in the translation would be bad, so the CMS could get
proper input-fileds for that data...

 - The words You need to download and install these files in order:

Maybe:  Download and install these files in order (2nd and 3rd are

This is not yet covered, I'm more interested in fixing the detection
logic first :-)

 - Could the text base installer be confusing, for people knowing that base
as component? Maybe Main installer ?

This was changed though.

 - The note at the bottom of the current page, Other way to download
LibreOffice, the productivity suite   does that make sense, or is it
 redundant?

The old style download page that is currently used did put all the
download links into the page - on the one hand for compatibility with
Browsers that have javascript disabled, and for those who want to
download multiple languagepacks/multiple versions at once.
Using the expandable list is easier than to keep going to the dropdown
and changing the selection.

The new-style-downloadpage doesn't have such a list, and thus it
wouldn't really make sense to add it. It is meant to be a dead-simple
downloadpage. Ideally the user will only see the buttons and will not
have to bother changing anything (I know it is not really possible for
deb/rpm already). I.e. if a windows user visits the page, he will only
see the buttons with hopefully the desired language selection, and not
be bothered with the manual selection process.

And a few theming issues (when there are no related pages, the void
space should be filled with something else, now the english page looks
like something is missing (as the related pages haven't been tagged
 like described below)

Anders did also improve this part - now when there is no DVD or other
additional links, the SDK and Source will be split into two, making
the page look fully populated, and not like something was missing.

I think at first we should make it en-US only and only use it at the
frontpage, as translations are missing anyway.

Well, translating is easy enough. But with making this the landing page,

Oh, I was again not typing what I was thinking :-/

then we should rethink our strategy about current content on the home page.
 Correct?

Nah, I didn't meant to write frontpage here. What I was trying to
write limit it to www.libreoffice.org only at first. As en-US only
might also imply only offer en-US downloads (but that is not what I
meant), rather than only use it on the site that uses en-US as
language, as the strings/translations will change, etc...

published. So the program code and everything is exactly the same as
rc3, only the filename for the download is changed.
So what you downloaded is the final version.

However it has been noted on other lists that having rc3 in the

What do you find problematic and do you have any ideas how to fix it?

I'd rather have the two toggles seperately, and not being forced to
click through both os and language selection.

e.g. I visit the page with linux, it can detect 32bit vs 64bit and
hopefully also give the correct language, but not rpm/deb. Thus I'd
rather only switch from rpm to deb, and not go through selecting os
and then language.

Or I have my main browser set to English, but I want to download the
German version. While the page does detect the settings correctly, I'd
like to just override the language.
(But I have to go through the whole process)

Chaning a single item could be added back with javascript/with or
without ajax. Then one also wouldn't need to go to separate pages.
(while the separate pages approach would still be available as
fallback).
Alternatively add back dropdowns that offer all choices..

and when manually choosing it isn't  obvious that it is a
 multi-step process

I think you are right. Perhaps it could be fixed by simply adding a
breadcrumb-tails or a page count in the header (as Thorsten also suggested,
although for the footer). But it shouldn't get to noisy.

Yes, but maybe you can read from my lines above that I'd rather not
have the user leave the downloadpage for the selection.
I'd prefer if the selection would be provided in the same page (ok if
that would only work with javascript).

And a few theming issues (when there are no related pages, the void

I imagine that there will always be related pages (at least the LGPL page
chould be tagged with dl to always show up).

Yeah, but I'd rather use a corresponding backend control to the
pagetype, than to abuse tags of other pages.

But there seems to be a
problem at the bottom left since there is no probable nor ISOs. Not sure
what to do for those. Perhaps split the remaining in two columns or just
 move it to the left.

Yeah, the split you did solves the looks like something was
missing/not rendered problem, so it is OK for me.

But maybe relaxing the version limit is also an option. I.e. there is
no 3.5.0 iso/portable yet, so just show the latest 3.4.x one instead.

If the download buttons should go on the front page,

Hope I cleared up that misunderstanding with my other post - that is
not what I wanted to write, but sometime my fingers do act on their
own. (Basically the fingers are too slow, my brain already skipped to
some other sentence, but the fingers are still writing the old, so
they go like screw it, just make one sentence out of the two to keep
up the pace :-P

@Chirstian,

The same thing/feeling I had when I first tried to download the latest
version of LibreOffice.
Not the whole crap about filename of the installer but rather the green
Download button that I clicked hoping to have the download of the latest
version started.

As far as I see it, that green Download button should be click-able and
should trigger the download of the latest version of the installer package
for the detected operating system and language.

Additionaly a Other Operating Systems and/or Languages link/button should
send you to a page with the list (maybe in a table form?) of available
versions of LibreOffice for different platform and different languages that
will allow the user to click on the specific version for the specific
operating system and language that he/she wants to download.

The same list should be presented to the user in care the auto detection
fails to get the necessary information from the browser.

It seems that it isn't the wrong font size, but instead the wrong font.
The problem seems to be that it font is not specified explicitly at all
on the website. It is only set in line 8 of layout.css to font: 87.5%
sans-serif;, which lets the browser choose any sans serif font. On the
Chinese site it apparently chooses a different font, that appears
smaller. Changing the css (using firebug) to read font: 87.5%
arial,helvetica,sans-serif; (which is the common way of specifying it I
think) fixes the problem, but also affects the Chinese text. I don't
read Chinese, so I can't tell if this is a problem.

The font size is all wrong. Or is it just my browser that is showing the
wrong size? It should look the same as all other footers on our pages.

Ah OK. So its probably better left untouched. Although I do notice that
the Chinese (traditional) site does not have this problem
[http://zh-tw.libreoffice.org/]

Best to leave it untouched then. I imagine the site Chinese
(simplified) maintainer may eventually ask for information on this.

Cheers,

Marc

It seems that you deployed the fixed version earlier. Did it fix the
problem for you? I assume that it was the same problem that Cor
experienced and reported fixed. So are there anything holding back a
switch? (i.e. tag the pages under download that needs to stay and move
them to below the new download and hide them from the menu, remove
Download Instructions, Pre-Releases and Portable, hide the old
download, and show the new with fixed url)

 On the webpage http://fr.libreoffice.org/telecharger/
there is a typo in the translation of :

Download the SDK for developing extensions and external tools

In French there is SDF instead of SDK

fixed it on the server.

I can't modify this part of the download page.

Those translations are in pootle.

Can somebody with access rights fix that ?

Don't forget to change the string in pootle, otherwise it will be
overridden next time again..

ciao

Ok, I was not aware that these strings were in pootle.
