Its not a problem we can take this to the discuss list. I think also is

there a way we can do some poll's if needed as that would allow for the
biggest response as people might not possibly be subscribed to the
 discuss
  list.

Yes a poll could be arranged. I think some of the topics will be obvious
and there will be no need to poll but we will have to discuss this on the
right list rather than adding unnecessary noise on this list. We could
 hold
discussions on the discuss and users list to get some suggestions, but,
 if
we get too many suggestions, we may have to decide on the topic.

We still need a little more time for people to respond to the call for
help. It may be a little too quick for now to jump to the choice of
 topics.
Maybe in a day or two? This will give us time to organize a to-do list.

I have to go but should be back in 4-5 hours. Family time -- breakfast,

i18n features in a single instance.

It looks like it will split community efforts but in the end we will
reach a larger usabase.

Consider the following situation, which IMHO, will likely happen:
Brazilian(*) users will first access the Brazilian askbot. If a
solution/answer is not available there, he will try somehow to get the
english answer... But as rule of thumb, his first attempt will be in
his native language.

It will also likely happen that a EN answer get translated to PT by a
volunteer, or even referenced as answer to a PT question.

Most of the PT volunteers will help in the PT askbot. Nevertheless I
believe there will be some 2-way assistance, if an EN question has a PT
anwswer. At large this is where it will grow.

With respect to sharing karmas, I doubt this is a most-wanted feature,
but I'm biased because I don't use it.

(*) Angolans, Mozabicans and even Portugueses

Thanks in advance for considering this brilliant solution for our

concerning the Workaround for the 3.4 uninstall Bug 36677 - Uninstall Problems
with MSI on Windows 7 64bit:
For Windows users that have LibreOffice prior to version 3.4.5 installed,
either uninstall that beforehand, or upgrade to 3.4.5. Otherwise, the upgrade

That hint is correct, but useless, 3.4.5 is no longer available via LibO site.
So a link to a mirror with that version (for example

Does anyone know the link to our archive site for past versions of

sufficient, as far as I know.

Florian

The largest reason for this integration is the clear divide between the
communication needs of contributors and users. It looks like, in large
part, contributors like the fast and furious speed of mailing lists
and the requirements for less computer resources, while users prefer the
organized nature of the forums. Mailing lists users are not that
concerned with the bells and whistles of forums. So, if there is a way
to integrate both, I don't think that you will really hear of any
complaints from the mailing list users, they will just keep working
along as they did before.

If we are to try to join the two groups it will help if we can bridge
both tools. That being said, there has been talk of some lists who may
prefer the forums as these provide tools for downloading files as well
as the other features you mention.

Where we should see gains are in the user-help arena. Forums are easily
accessible to all, and, as Bjoern pointed out in a recent post on the
marketing list[1], this could be a very good entry point for users who
would like to move to more serious involvement in the project and
contribute.

This will mean that we should plan on concerted efforts at promoting the
contributor side of LibreOffice on the forums as well as the promote the
all-important and much needed community building.

I am curious, if we were to keep both mailing lists and forums, would
this tax our infrastructure negatively? Do we have enough hardware
resources to handle it?

We should also expect that there will be a natural shake-up of both the
mailing lists and forums where some lists or forum categories will die a
natural death simply for the reason that the majority of users will
prefer one mode of communication over the other.

Cheers,

Marc

IMO that's silly. On lists like this (website) and a few others of the

what we're doing. They've never been publicised as part of the project

functioning of mailing lists to post of the forums and vice versa with
forum users.

while I don't know whether it's technically possible: Is it worth the
efforts? IMHO, we would end up with the very same problems that mailing
lists don't support certain forum functions (top-pinning of topics,
deletion of postings etc.) - this is the reason why Nabble isn't
sufficient, as far as I know.

Florian

The largest reason for this integration is the clear divide between the
communication needs of contributors and users. It looks like, in large
part, contributors like the fast and furious speed of mailing lists and
the requirements for less computer resources, while users prefer the
organized nature of the forums. Mailing lists users are not that concerned
with the bells and whistles of forums. So, if there is a way to integrate
both, I don't think that you will really hear of any complaints from the
mailing list users, they will just keep working along as they did before.

If we are to try to join the two groups it will help if we can bridge both
tools. That being said, there has been talk of some lists who may prefer
the forums as these provide tools for downloading files as well as the
other features you mention.

I am curious, if we were to keep both mailing lists and forums, would this
tax our infrastructure negatively? Do we have enough hardware resources to
handle it?

We should also expect that there will be a natural shake-up of both the
mailing lists and forums where some lists or forum categories will die a
natural death simply for the reason that the majority of users will prefer
one mode of communication over the other.

Cheers,

Marc

For the moment, hardware resources to run both the mailing lists and the
forums are not a blocker for running them at the same time.

Mailing lists and the forum are currently running on 2 different machines
due to multiple infrastructure related reasons (mostly because forum is
still in testing/setup phase whereas mailing lists are in full production
mode).

Assuming some users already prefer forums over mailing lists and will move
to forum as soon as it is officially launched then the machines running
mailinglists and forum(s) will benefit from a natural load balancing due to
user natural migration to the preferred way of communicating.

What I advise against though is keeping both a forum as well as a

userbase/people that could provide answers. And of course it will be
much harder to track what happens. If you need to be subscribed to the
mailinglist as well as to visit the forum to keep up-to-date on a
specific topic, then something went wrong.
Waching mailinglist for X, and the forum for Y is fine.

a big +1 to that!
