I tested something with mattdm, we don't have to unprotect this page anymore, 
but we have old translations to take care about this.
As release is tomorrow, we decided to freeze this for a few days then notice 
the translators so they can go and translate. We assumed people are getting 
ready for announcements and other communication work.

@jibecfed The protection for the front page wasn't introduced for the migration 
— it was added in 2016 when we were being hit really hard by spammers. (Look at 
the changelog from around that time to see the junk we were dealing with.)

@puiterwijk , @kevin — the wiki spam problem seems under control... knock on 
wood. Do you think it would be okay unprotect and see what happens?

I wonder why it was not protected before and worked fine, did we had major 
issues that led to strengthen access? Let's be optimistic: maybe this was only 
needed for the migration and can be undone?

elsewhere in the wiki in the desired languages, and then once the translation 
team is happy, we can add the wiki syntax to the main page. Would that work?

There is a reason for that. You should ask either the blocker or the Council 
about how to add translations to that specific wiki page.

The translation macro (as described on the wiki above) is not applicable
for main Wiki page. That page is locked so it can't be eddited and language
bar can't be inserted.

Same as for #785, we don't own the wiki and I am also not sure how and IF the 
translation process has already been set up in the new wiki. The old wiki used 
to be in English only, you had to choose for other languages manually, if 
available.
