Re: [Wengophone-devel] German Wikipedia-Article about WengoPhone Classic
Hello, Thank you very much for this text, I wrote some notes below the section i find to be incomplete/incorrect.On 3/4/06, Sebastian Heine [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:I made a quick translation of the german article: WengoPhone Classic is a free available SIP compliant VoIP-Client, whichpermits free calling from PC to PC and to SIP-Phones as well as thechargeable calling to landlines and cell phones (Call-Out).WengoPhone Classic is programmed and published by OpenWengo, a community of Free (as in speech) Software enthusiast. The goal of the OpenWengocommunity is to provide an enjoyable and friendly, yet productive, hubfor Free software development related to VoIP technologies.Characteristics The software functions, like some other softphones (a software fortelephoning running on a pc), behind the most firewalls and NAT-Routerswithout any problems, as it uses the TCP-Port 80 for communication which is normally being used for surfing the world wide web and therefore itis open in most cases. Well, most of the times it does not uses the HTTP tunnel. Anyway, i guess going that deep in technical details is not useful for the reader. WengoPhone Classic is Free Software publishedunder the GNU GPL. WengoPhone Classic uses, compared to Skype, the open and compliant VoIP protocol SIP. The main advantage of that is: You cancall every phone which supports the SIP standard without charge. The amount charged depends on the SIP service you use. Therebythat could be IP-Phones, softphones on computers but also normal phones which are connected to the internet through an adapter. The call historyand contact lists are stored on the Wengo servers. It's not the case yet, AFAIK. However, it is something being worked on, so it will probably come shortly. Beyond of pure telephoning with WengoPhone Classic you can make videocalls (up to your bandwidth in full view), chat with your friends and send SMS messages.DevelopmentFunctions like voicemail, call deflection, conference call (for bothaudio and video), PIM-Synchronisation, data transfer and more are indevelopment. Another goal is platform independence, so that versions for MacOS X, FreeBSD and Pocket PC become possible. We could also mentions some very useful libraries developed by OpenWengo, like PhApi that allows you to add VoIP functionalities to any application very easily. On 3/4/06, Patrick Aljord [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: here is my version, I put it on my wikipedia profile with yours:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Patcito Thanks! As for Sebastian's version, below are my comments: WengoPhone is free software and is a VoIP service developed by the OpenWengo community I wouldn't say that WengoPhone is a service, but a piece of software. None of these functionalities are tied to a particular SIP provider and can be used with any provider available on the market unlike other proprietary solutions such as Skype. Well, it is possible to do so with Classic, but it's not quite well integrated. NG version will allow users to do that very easily. PC to PC calls are HiFi quality and use several codecs such as ILBC, AMR-WB, PCMA, PCMU, AMR and GSM. We use Speex whenever we can in new versions, not AMR* anymore. WengoPhone also allows users to do video calls using ffmpeg. If this article is not written towards developers, it may not ring a bell to readers. Just my 2 cents. Hello, Sebastian Heine wrote: I set up an Article about WengoPhone Classic. It is not very substantial at the moment, so everyone is welcome to enhance it. Great! Thank you very much for this article! Although i don't understand a word of german unfortunately, i'd like to make one comment. It seems that OpenWengo is mentionned only in the table that sits on the right of the page. Maybe it would be cool to further explain in the article the relationship between the OpenWengo community and WengoPhone Classic, using two or three sentences ? I apologize in advance if this information is already included in the article. Also, feel free to reject my comments. Is anyone willing to translate from German to other languages ;-) ? WengoPhone NG source code is not yet ready to be translated, but making it ready would be very helpful, and not that complicated for a first contribution. Would you be interested in contributing to this effort? As for translating strings, we should wait for the first string freeze, which is when developers do not change any string that appears on the screen for a while, to translate anything. The only documentation we provide currently are wiki pages, which are subject to frequent changes, so it is not very pratical to translate, and it would require setting up another server to host them.
