Re: [Wien] my membership to the mailing list gets disabled every 3 weeks

2017-02-01 Thread Peter Blaha
Thanks for the information. I browsed through it and found the two
possible options in the mailman config, where one can either "mung" or
"wrap" the from-headers to circumvent the DMARC Policiy.

However, both methods have documented drawbacks, and I'm a bit afraid
that by changing this setting, it may remove the unsubscribe problem for
some of you, but on the other hand, some others will not see the mails
at all or not in proper form ?

At the moment I'm monitoring the bounces and I've also increased the
bounce level, so that unsubscribing should not happen so often (or a
bounce reset will happen in between. After removing all "user not known"
bounces, so far I get only one bounce, probably from an
"Autoreply"-setting of this mail client ?? (I've informed this user in
private).

If this does not help on the long run, I'll consider to use one of these
problematic??? fixes, but as I said, after switching on the monitoring,
there was no bounce for one of the addresses reporting frequent
unsubscription.

In my mail account I do not have any automatic forwarding. The letters
simply lay somewhere at the mail.ru server, and program Mozilla
Thunderbird every 15 minutes makes connection, checks letters, and loads
new. So bouncing is done at the level of mail.ru or closer to Wien.

I have looked through deleted letters: during last month I had 2
notifications 11 and 19 Jan 2017.

And what is strange: I had looked, after re-enabling the subscription,
through the archive in order to see the letters that I missed (that were
bounced), and I did not find any "excessive bounces". Though I must
admit that I was not very attentive in this, but I remember I was

the standard .forward structure. As an example of this, one of the

information I have is:

"Remote Server returned 'http://gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com> #5.7.1 SMTP; 550-5.7.1

(The above is truncated by the server at Northwestern.) I can find this
information at Northwestern's outlook webserver which I have configured
to forward to my gmail account.

My understanding is that when the email is forwarded by northwestern.edu
to my (main) gmail account, it is an address
mail.ru being sent by northwestern.edu
. Google checks with the DMARC policy of
mail.run to see if northwestern is allowed to send a mail.run email.
Since it is not, gmail rejects it.

My understanding is that .forward is problematic, and on its way out --
I have not heard of any way to repair/overcome this. If anyone does,

Re: [Wien] my membership to the mailing list gets disabled every 3 weeks

2017-01-30 Thread Peter Blaha
I've nothing changed recently in the mailing list configuration, so I
don't know why this should now happen (except when your mail system has
changed e.g spam-processing, ...)

It probably comes from bounce processing, i.e. mailman cannot send to
your email addresses and gets a bounce back. After 5 (or 10 days if it
is a soft bounce) it will disable your membership and just before, it
will send you a warning.

It may have to do with your specific email accounts ? maybe they think
it is spam ... ?

Of course, I can increase the bounce level from 5 (up to 10), but for
sure I want to keep it, otherwise mailman will keep outdated addresses
forever and continues to send mails to them.
