[Bug 17878] New: User names starting in WP: are unblockable

2009-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17878

 Summary: User names starting in WP: are unblockable
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: Blocking
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ro...@robertrohde.com

A vandal discovered today that if your username starts with WP:, as in
User:WP:ANI then attempting to block the account results in a block against
User:ANI instead of User:WP:ANI.

I'm not sure what part of the WP: magic is triggering this problem, but it
could become a significant nuisance if more people pick up on it.

The workaround is to rename the account first and then block it.

In the golbal block form you can use #USERIDNUMBER in the username field,
that might also work in the local block lists as well.

[Bug 17879] New: AuthPlugin allows the creation of locally forbidden names.

2009-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17879

 Summary: AuthPlugin allows the creation of locally forbidden
names.
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: User login/settings
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ro...@robertrohde.com

User::isValidUserName prevents the local creation of usernames that are
prefixed with namespace keys, i.e. User:Wikipedia:Bob is forbidden when
Wikipedia: is a local namespace.

However, the vandal mentioned in bug 17877 demonstrated that CentralAuth (and
AuthPlugins in general) can allow one to bypass this.

For example, create an account such as User:WP:ANI in a wiki that does not have
a WP: namespace and then use single user login to create the same account on
enwiki, where it would normally be forbidden.

I'm filing this separately from 17877 because strictly speaking one could
address that issue without addressing this one (or vice versa), but I believe
that if the AuthPlugin functionality is fixed to prevent the creation of
accounts whose names are locally forbidden due to naming conflicts then that
would eliminate the most likely and accessible path that leads to the bug
described in 17877. (Other paths to a 17877 scenario include the post-facto
creation of a conflicting namespace, or the use of RenameUser to intentionally
move an account to a conflicting name.)

Also, I think the best approach is to patch Mediawiki to prevent AuthPlugins
from creating new accounts for locally forbidden names, but I suppose one might
also consider patching just CentralAuth to accomplish the same thing for just
Wikimedia.

Wouldn't it be an option, to include substitutions like these (likely better
the entire automated conversion between zh varians) as a postprocessing after
fallback from one zh to the other?
The outcome may be imperfect, but can assumed to be better than what we have
now.

--- Comment #1 from Roan Kattouw roan.katt...@home.nl 2009-03-09 10:50:08

(In reply to comment #0)
I notice many of the examples on api.php hardwire in a Main%20Page.

The problem is on many wikis other than English ones, that page won't exist.

Hence the user cannot just click to try the example. He must edit the URL.

Perhaps choose a page that is sure to exist. Maybe some MediaWiki:... page.

Also if it does exists, well it is usually quite large.

Another idea would be to dynamically link whatever the Main Page is called
according to $wgLanguageCode.

The latter would involve grabbing MediaWiki:mainpage from the message cache
for each help view, which feels overdone to me. The other problem is that there
aren't any pages that are sure to exist; Template:! would probably be a
good candidate, but that page typically doesn't have an interesting history.

Also note that other examples than Main Page are used: API,
(whoops, that should be File:, corrected in
r48215),, Albert Einstein, ,
, , User:Alice, User:Bob,
Template:Stub, User:YurikBot, User:brion (who doesn't exist,
Brion's username is Brion VIBBER), User:TimStarling, 217.121.114.116 (which
happened to be my IP at the time of writing that module). Most of these are
metanames (Foo, Bar, Alice, Bob), English names (Physics, Stub) or
Wikipedia-specific stuff (YurikBot, TimStarling). They're intended to be, and
for most of these there's no quick, language- and wiki-independent alternative
that doesn't require hitting the message cache.

Closing as WONTFIX because of performance concerns and limited use.

but have the option only for sysops to view the page counts, popular pages

implement this using the $wgGroupPermissions array. If someone can confirm

protected $m_months = array(
0 = 'januari',
1 = 'februari',
2 = 'maart',

5 = 'juni',
6 = 'juli',
7 = 'augustus',
8 = 'september',
9 = 'oktober',

Is this the right place for this table?

Sorry for the confusion. This is not a bug in the SMW software, but a
configuration setting of the SMW homepage.

We have maintained a world-editable handbook/homepage for some time, but it
went more and more out of synch with the actual software. This was because
contributors would add/modify information somewhere but nobody would update or
check it. Since we do not currently have enough resources (i.e. people) to
check the validity of contributions, to fight spam, and to update/delete them
when no longer valid, the site is now restricted to a smaller group of people.
Maybe we will find a mode for opening editing again in the future, but
currently I just give out logins manually upon request to people who wish to
contribute to the SMW handbook. After all, s-mw.o is really just a tool's
homepage, so changes are mainly needed when the software is updated and when
typos are discovered.

[Bug 17882] Dutch month names empty on SMW displays

Yes, this is fine. However, I am surprised that you need to add the numeric
keys explicitly. The definition

array('januari', 'februari', ..., 'december')

does the same thing on my machine. This seems to be the reason for the original
problem, too. Even without specific Dutch translations, you should be able to
access the English month names. I guess that this is some PHP characteristic
that we are not aware of yet, and that might cause problems in many other cases
if we do not find a more generic solution.

Ability to export a whole namespace.

I sometimes need to export all the pages from a custom namespace, to be able to
transfer it to a different wiki. Attaching a tag to all the pages in a certain
namespace didn't seem as the right way to do it.

It looks like SpamBlacklist is parsing the submitted text using
Article::prepareTextForEdit() which in turn calls Parser::parse(), then
CategoryTree is called from the parser and uses wfMsgExt() with 'parseinline',
which it shouldn't be doing because parseinline uses $wgParser and $wgTitle,
which may very well be different from the parser and title CategoryTree was
called for (which is the case here: $wgTitle is null).

Either CategoryTree should be fixed, or parseinline should handle $wgTitle ==
null more gracefully. I don't know which I prefer just yet, I'm gonna talk this
through with Tim first.

Per the discussion in the URL
(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=276064013#Double_redirects), there
is clear community support for permanently enabling at least double redirects.
Assigning to Brion 'cos the next scap will close the loophole (bug17570,
r47512) that currently allows double redirects on all Wikimedia wikis; this
config change should be done before or together with the next scap. Severity !=
enhancement because we've already *got* the feature, we now don't want to lose
it! :D

I suggest to think over setting $wgMaxRedirects=2 (minimum)
on all Mediawiki wikis, if cost warrants it.
The current setting has imho turned out quite nicely
to keep technicalities out of the ordinary users sights
while we are waiting several days before we get a new list of
5000 duplicate redirects (:only:) which we then can eliminate.

Thus we can count this setting as yet another small step
towards better usability.

Hi,

When I try to use different {} in the
same form, because I want to insert some preloaded pages between templates, I
get always the same preloaded page from the last {free text}
instance. To be more clear, the form is the following:

/noincludeincludeonly
{}
!-- Some code inside here --
{end template}

{}
!-- Some code inside here --
{end template}

{}

{}
!-- Some code inside here --
{end template}

{}
!-- Some code inside here --
{end template}

{}

{save} {preview} {} {cancel}

/includeonly

And I get the same preloaded PAGE 2 for both {free text}.

I hope I made me clear enough :).

Kind regards,
Josep

[Bug 17893] New: en.wiktionary bureaucrats can't add sysop, crat and bot flags

2009-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17893

 Summary: en.wiktionary bureaucrats can't add sysop, crat and bot
flags
 Product: Wikimedia
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
 URL: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Special:UserRights
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: tho...@googlemail.com

As can be seen on this screenshot: http://www.strideth.com/betsy/userrights.gif
bureaucrats on enwiktionary are not able to add sysop, bureaucrat and bot flags
anymore by using Special:Userrights. I tried it myself and I replicated this
bug. I encountered another problem: When I assigned the bureaucrat flag to
myself (without sysop), I was not able to access Special:Userrights
(Permission error), only after adding sysop as well I could go there.

Best regards,
Th.

[Bug 17894] New: morebots is undocumented, doesn't start automatically on boot

2009-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon

 Product: Wikimedia
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
 URL: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Server_admin_log
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW

AssignedTo: and...@epstone.net
ReportedBy: br...@wikimedia.org

There's a brief note on bug 17807 about how to start the current incarnation of
the morebots IRC bot for updating the server admin log, but there's no
documentation on wikitech about it, nor is there an init script for it -- as a
result it doesn't start on boot.

Should add a doc page and slip the startup into rc.local on the wikitech host.

[Bug 17896] New: Failover/fallback to internal storage when $wgDefaultExternalStore external storage clusters are all broken

2009-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17896

 Summary: Failover/fallback to internal storage when
$wgDefaultExternalStore external storage clusters are

 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: Database
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: br...@wikimedia.org

We had a ~30 minute outage where pages couldn't be saved on en.wikipedia.org
today, because the blob tables on cluster20/cluster21 had reached the default
MyISAM 1-million row limit.

While the databases are being rebuilt with a raised limit, we restored write
capability by switching off $wgDefaultExternalStore for enwiki, so text entries
are temporarily being saved straight into the 'text' table.

It would probably make a lot of sense if we could do this automatically --
instead of breaking the site, fall back to an acceptable short-term alternative
and throw big fat alerts for us to go fix the ES parts.

This might be causing the problems being observed related to page moves during
this rough time period. Pages moved without suppressredirect are sometimes
being left with a page, a history, a redirect flag, but no page text.

Per bug 15154 comment 4, please create a script which combines css/js files so
we're making fewer requests to get everything. In addition, this script might
minify js, and accept a ?deminify=yes parameter for debugging.

This has been bandied about in circles for a while, so anyone wishing to
implement this would do well to review the discussion on wikitech-l (or maybe
mediawiki-l?) if they're not already familiar with it.

Would it be possible to move it to http://nomcom.wikimedia.org (and have the

I imagine it wouldn't even need a redirect - it's a /very/ internal wiki.

Could it be fixed by setting an internal alias of Wiktionary for Project?

I'm not sure why it'd have to be. The other Wiktionary language editions don't
do that, AFAIK.

2009-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17900

 Summary: Special:UserRights doesn't show the updated log after
changing rights
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: User interface
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: mikelifegu...@fastmail.fm

After changing rights using Special:UserRights, the page is refreshed - one
would expect to then see the log entry you just created, but it is not shown in
the user rights log quote at the bottom. One must refresh the page to see it.
Please make this work properly.

I agree this should not be a high priority, though we do know that spammers use
Special:EmailUser on occasion. Normally it is very easy to track down, and gets
them a swift block with email disabled, proving spammers are not the brightest
folk you've ever met.

 Is the issue just the user is blocked notice? Fixed that in r48155.

 No, I blocked the user then ran a CU got no results at all - not even the
 account creation. After that, did CU before blocking.

This doesn't seem related to the block option.

You're right, I can't replicate this. Marked as WORKSFORME I'll see if I can
figure out what this really was.

[Bug 17901] Remove any remaining instances of dontcountme=s

--- Comment #2 from MZMcBride pub...@mzmcbride.com 2009-03-10 05:23:35 UTC
---
dontcountme=s was an old Webalizer hack used to make sure that scripts
wouldn't screw up pageview stats. Wikimedia hasn't used Webalizer since about
2004, I believe.

If there's anywhere in the code that dontcountme=s is still being used, it
should be removed per r35103. I've adjusted the bug summary accordingly.
