[Bug 189] Add a music wikimodule

2010-03-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #105 from Tim Starling tstarl...@wikimedia.org 2010-03-31

Further to that: note that PostScript is a Turing complete language.
ImageMagick invokes Ghostscript, which is a complete implementation of it. You
can do fun things like generating fractals:

http://www.physics.uq.edu.au/people/foster/postscript.html

So like Lilypond, abcm2ps+convert can have arbitrary running time, by way of
the postscript injection feature.

What I'd like to see from a Lilypond extension is:

* Coding style and security as per the relevant pages on mediawiki.org
* Generally good programming practice, like not pretending to be a math
extension as in attachment 1141
* Optionally, multiple input formats via the *2ly programs distributed with
Lilypond
* Optionally, Ogg Vorbis output and OggHandler integration
* Optionally, remote rendering, say via Http::get() to a remote instance of
MediaWiki. This would allow for a fixed resource pool, alleviating DoS
concerns.

I committed r64426 just now, which corrects the empty ul issue. Thankyou for
reporting that - I've heard about it before but never got around to taking any
action on it.

combined.min.css is not part of the skin, but it is used by some of the
skin-related extension called Vector and the editing related extension
WikiEditor. You are seeing CSS which is used together with jQuery UI in there,
and the use of jQuery UI here has to do specifically with our editing tools
making use of jQuery UI's Dialog and Draggable modules.

The proper extension to report this sort of thing to would thus be the
UsabilityInitiative extension, which contains both the Vector and WikiEditor
extensions.

Chatted with Nikerabbit on #mediawiki-i18n about this. He thinks the best way
to do this would be to make the parser aware of language context and not add
extra hacks to the individual parser functions.

I think that makes sense. I can look into it soon.

Yeah, guys at #mediawiki said me that the parser doesn't know which language
does the engine operate.

Thanks in advance. :)

[Bug 23016] New: Create new extension implementing article importance and quality (and/or other configurable attributes) as database fields

2010-03-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23016

Summary: Create new extension implementing article importance
and quality (and/or other configurable attributes) as
database fields
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: [other]
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: tisane2...@gmail.com

This new extension will create a new database table for article quality and
importance (in the default configuration), and/or whatever other attributes the
wiki owner may wish to configure. This will allow RecentChanges and other
listings to be filtered by these criteria. It will be possible to set and
modify the values of these fields by API or by tabs/dropdowns at the top of the
page. The wiki owner can configure the fields to allow any value (presumably
implemented by inputbox), or only those values that exist in a list
(implemented by dropdown menu.)

For rationale, please see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:VPT#Create_article_quality_and_importance_fields_in_the_database

Make sure template editing is turned on in your preferences. Also, templates
aren't wrapped as-you-type, only when the edit page loads, so you'll have to
hit preview or save first.

Look at the times, Hydro edited at 11:41, 28. Mär. 2010 and your edit was at
09:29, 29. Mär. 2010. So you were editing a text many hours old (from 14:49,
18. Mär. 2010 if also taking Waerfelu edit into acount).
Saving checks the version against the current one at the master, so this
couldn't happen.
I suspect that flagged revs may have interferred, but all edits were
autosighted, making it mroe unlikely. :/

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Plasmaoldid=9752546

I undid a braindead history merge from plasma to plasma physics, before the
script was run in the English Wikipedia. Since the history merge tangled many
edits together from January 2005, I wonder if my machinations at the plasma and
plasma physics pages in January 2010 caused something to break.

I'm fairly sure that the above revision was visible before I untangled the

I'm not sure what you are asking here? The title of the page seems to be
 correct.

The page is [[zh:Portal:移动版首页]]. He added {{DISPLAYTITLE:{{SITENAME to the
page, which should override that title with the sitename, which is Wikipedia.
On the main site --
http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:%E7%A7%BB%E5%8A%A8%E7%89%88%E9%A6%96%E9%A1%B5
-- it does that. On the mobile site -- http://zh.m.wikipedia.org/ -- it does
not.

[Bug 23019] New: Make functions of the Usability Initiative standards compliant

2010-03-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23019

Summary: Make functions of the Usability Initiative standards
compliant
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Normal
 Component: UsabilityInitiative
AssignedTo: tpars...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ap...@apper.de
CC: roan.katt...@gmail.com, ngau...@wikimedia.org,
amil...@wikimedia.org

There are some issues with standards compliance of the new extensions.

This is because of two files: the first is
http://bits.wikimedia.org/w/extensions/UsabilityInitiative/css/vector/jquery-ui-1.7.2.css?1.7.2y

I know, this is a library, but it produces most of the errors. But everything
which throws errors are things, I don't think you are using: all the browser
specific border-radius-things, the zoom property (only available in IE) and
so on.
If you don't want to change this, then please upgrade to jquery.ui 1.8. At the
moment the library ONLY has browser specific border-radius for example, but not
the standard compliant border-radius like Opera and IE9 are using it.

The second file is in your responsibility: It's
http://bits.wikimedia.org/w/extensions/UsabilityInitiative/css/combined.min.css?77a

Please have a look at
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fbits.wikimedia.org%2Fw%2Fextensions%2FUsabilityInitiative%2Fcss%2Fcombined.min.css%3F77aprofile=css3usermedium=allwarning=1

Here is the same: Why do you support insufficient implementations like
-moz-border-radius but not the standard compliant border-radius? Wouldn't it
be better to change this and support browsers, which implement this correctly
but not support browsers, which only support it in a browser specific way?

Another thing is the use of cursor:ew-resize;. Why? In the few browsers
supporting it, it is exactly the same as e-resize. The CSS3 validator doesn't
know it - it's still in the standard but marked as features at risk because
it's about to be dropped. Please change this to e-resize, so all major browsers
will handle it like some do today.

*Ahem* oops... Right, that's what I meant.

After further research, it looks like the error is that
Special:Disambiguations lists only the pages from the MAIN NAMESPACE.

Looking at SpecialDisambiguations.php, there's a comment that makes it seem
like this was the intended behavior.

So I guess this is less of a bug and more of a why? Also, I could fix this on
my wiki (if I wanted), but that may not help everyone else. But if there was a
reason to include only the MAIN NS, then I guess this could just be closed as
by design.

[Bug 4421] Image file extension should not be part of the name

 CC||b...@mzmcbride.com

--- Comment #45 from MZMcBride b...@mzmcbride.com 2010-03-31 21:57:37 UTC ---
I'm not so sure about this.

Personally, my scripts often rely on the assumption that image.img_name is the
same as page.page_title when page_namespace = 6. I use this assumption to
generate reports of files without file description pages, file description
pages without files, and comparing enwiki_p.page.page_title to
commonswiki_p.image.img_name. I imagine there are other scripts on the
Toolserver and elsewhere that rely on a similar assumption. This change would
likely break these scripts.

I'm also concerned about naming conflicts. In bug 20971#c4, Brion suggests that
only non-conflicted image names would be stripped. Deliberate inconsistency
here doesn't seem like an ideal situation for editors or anyone else. Though I
suppose page text will be inconsistent for the rest of time if this change is
implemented anyway.

On an emotional level, stripping the file extensions feels wrong. A JPG simply
isn't the same as a GIF or a PNG or an SVG. Even users who are only adding the
file inclusion code to pages need to understand and appreciate that.

Your concerns are, IMO, trivial compared to the troubles we have from including
extensions thus far.

You're right that JPEG, GIF, PNG, SVG simply are not the same, which is just
another reason why they don't need filename extensions anywhere, and certainly
not at their File:Name locales.

I agree completely here. We often upload different formats of the same image
for differing purposes, and change only the file extension. The reason for that
is it *does* matter which one you use!

(In reply to comment #5)
Okay, well, the main reason I proposed it is that it basically prevents a
replacement image in a different format from being uploaded.

That's a good thing. The replacement image with a different format is a
different image. Any good Commoner knows that an image of a given format can
never be superseded by an image in another format on that basis alone. This is
a feature, not a bug.

Chatted with Nikerabbit on #mediawiki-i18n about this. He thinks the best way
to do this would be to make the parser aware of language context and not add
extra hacks to the individual parser functions.

I think that makes sense. I can look into it soon.

Just discussed this issue at my local wiki.

The way you're going to develop this idea is not the same as my proposal. Even
if text was written in Klingon and we switched the interface to Greek, the text
would still be in Klingon. So, the parser _has_ to know the language it's going
to operate if it wanna be fully i18n-friendly as I understand.

Sincerely, ...
