[Bug 26470] Add toggle for checkered or transparent image background on file description pages
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26470 --- Comment #20 from Erwin Dokter er...@darcoury.nl 2011-07-09 17:49:52 UTC --- I wa thinking more about a static bar above the image, not the kind that pops up like in IE. I know what the C stands for. The reason why it may not work is because local CSS overrides the CSS in core. Enwiki now has a static bg-image; placing a hover in the core CSS will be overridden by that static bg-image. But that is indeed not a big issue. I am asuming that the scope of this bug is the image description page only, so transparency outside of the image description page (such as galleries in non-article space) are not considered. On the image description page, there are two elements: the main image, and the thumbnails in the history table. I propose we make main image transparent on hover, and the history thumbs permanently transparent. That would done as follows: /* * Add a checkered background image on hover for file description pages. */ .filehistory a img, #file img:hover { /* @embed */ background: white url(images/Checker-16x16.png) repeat; } This basically means the previous patch had one 'hover' too many. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

UploadWizard currently allows you to create your own categories as you upload. In particular, people whose language isn't english often create categories in their own language. This results in people creating files that don't get reviewed. Some Commons admins say that we should remove all ability to add categories from the wizard, and that if they want different categories they can do it properly later. That seems extreme to me and of course properly is being defined as the old way, which I don't agree with. [Bug 29790] UploadWizard: ensure that uploaded file is added to existing categories
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29790 --- Comment #1 from Neil Kandalgaonkar ne...@wikimedia.org 2011-07-09 20:17:27 UTC --- Revising this... the real problem is that the Commons categorization bot sees that a file has a category, and assumes it doesn't need to be tagged as needs categories. So, the real fix is: - Mention to the user that categories are in English, canonically. - If there are no categories added, then add to the wikitext. The parser will expand that to an ... template. - (complicated) if we still want to allow the user to create categories (perhaps they will be helpful to recategorization) then they shouldn't count, and should still be added. But it's definitely simpler to bar them from creating a new category, however counterproductive... a widget that could express a tree structure would be better. These fixes are very Commons-specific, so they should be in configuration. i.e. uncategorized-template or something. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

Wording might be tricky here. Perhaps an extra help icon. - Experienced users will want to add cats. But just showing red links is impenetrable to the new user. It may be helpful to have the user confirm with a dialog that they really want to add a new category. - Again, the real fix would be to have a widget which could navigate the tree and add cats under other cats. The current configuration in trunk appears to be correct, as attested by test.wikipedia.org, where the meta tag is the first element within the head element. This is not true on en.wikipedia because $wgHtml5 != true, however the UTF-8 tag is the second element, only after title, and of course HTTP headers take precedence before then. There is never a situation where we are unable to specify UTF-8 encoding 'in time'. As the original commentor has not amended this post for four months, I'm closing this wontfix, with the hope that if there is still an issue with the meta element being too late where the $wgHtml5 != true, then a new bug can be opened with an example of the problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. The reason 00%.png works is because the image is already tiny and we don't upscale really small images. (SVG's aren't affected since we don't use image magick for them) I believe we're currently using ImageMagick 6.6.2-6 2011-03-09 Q8 (based on image metadata), which would indicate we need to update to fix this bug. Thus I'm going to remove testme and add ops. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 29794] New: Weird problem with some characters on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29794 Web browser: --- Bug #: 29794 Summary: Weird problem with some characters on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition Product: MediaWiki extensions Version: any Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: Unprioritized Component: Gadgets AssignedTo: maxsem.w...@gmail.com ReportedBy: mybugs.m...@gmail.com CC: brightb...@gmail.com, krinklem...@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified Created attachment 8764 -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=8764 Big annoying bug with Gadgets extension The problem I've mentioned on bug 28215 comment 7 reappeared, and this time I was able to find some way to reproduce it! I've created a simple MediaWiki:Gadget-A.js with var test = 'ok'; and then added it to MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition with something like this: *A|A.js and then nothing was displayed on Special:Gadgets. I didn't know why it didn't show up, so I've made some tests... At some point I decided to type the same text again and it suddenly started to work, which I found very weird, because the diff was showing two pages with apparently the same content. Since the diffs ignore spaces and some other characteres, I decided to check exactly which characteres were in the editbox in the version of the page which didn't load the gadget. To do that, I wrote the following in the console of my browser: - var str = $('#wpTextbox1').val(); for (i=0;istr.length;i++){ console.debug( ' + str.charAt(i) + '\t' + str.charCodeAt(i) + ' ); } - You can check the result in the attached image. So, indeed there was some invisible character between A and |, whose char code is 8206 (what is that? how did that ended up in the page?). So, it would be really really cool if the code of the extension could check of such strange characters in the MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition page, and either filter them out or display some warning, so that people don't need to fight against such an odd bug again. For the record, here is the log of the first round of the fight: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikibooks/pt/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadgets-definitionoffset=2011030100limit=21action=history (spoiler: the bug wins! =) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

This isn't MediaWiki's fault, if anything it's either a WikiMedia server cluster bug or it's that we should be using something other than timestamps to sort edits. There be dragons, in my opinion, with using something other than timestamp to sort because then users get confused, and short of buying a few atomic clocks there's no way to improve timestamp accuracy, as I presume each cluster is NTPing together.
