[Bug 31127] localname of zh-min-nan on English wikis is in Min Nan
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31127 --- Comment #3 from Donald Lancon dc...@obkb.com 2011-09-27 07:09:16 UTC --- After I posted my comment I noticed that there are actually a great many languages for which the localname is the same as the name. A full list appears below, in case someone needs it (and doesn't feel like generating it themselves). Some of these are actually legitimate duplications, in that the name in English really is the same as in the native language (e.g., af = Afrikaans). Most of the rest seem to be missing a proper name in English (e.g., bxr = Буряад), wherever that should be specified. But some actually seem to be missing a proper _native_ language name (although I haven't done any research to reveal exactly which ones those would be). Presumably, based on the above comments, anyone who can actually fix the problem(s) would be able tell what information is missing where. In the list below I've given my suggestions [in brackets] for what the English versions should be when they differ from the native names, based on my own (somewhat old) records. I haven't verified the native names, although Wikipedia articles could obviously be used to do this. [Bug 30772] mobile wikipedia commonly uses non-canonical urls that don't get squid/varnish/whatever cache purged
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30772 Bawolff bawolff...@gmail.com changed: What|Removed |Added CC||bawolff...@gmail.com Summary|mobile wikipedia shows the |mobile wikipedia commonly |old versions of articles|uses non-canonical urls ||that don't get ||squid/varnish/whatever ||cache purged --- Comment #14 from Bawolff bawolff...@gmail.com 2011-09-27 14:16:15 UTC --- For reference, (my) current theory is: http://ru.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D0%97%D0%B0%D0%B3%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%B0mobileaction=view_normal_site is a non-canoncial url (the mobileaction part, plus the /w/index.php instead of /wiki/pagename ), and only canoncial urls get their squid/varnish cache purged (otoh, I'm very unclear on how mobile sites get their caches purged in the first place since $wgInternalUrl seems to just be the normal url. But I did do test edits, and it does appear that normal mobile urls got their caches cleared on edit while non-canonical urls don't.) Steps to reproduce (I was doing this on enwikinews, adapt these steps as appropriate): *Viewed (in another browser that has no wikimedia cookies) http://en.m.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=Wikinews:Sandboxmobileaction=view_normal_site http://en.m.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Sandbox http://en.m.wikinews.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox *Edit [[n:Wikinews:Sandbox]] (in your normal browser, not the one you viewed pages during step 1) *Refresh the pages you were viewing from step 1 Actual behaviour: *Only the one with the normal canonical url ( http://en.m.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Sandbox ) is updated Expected behaviour: All 3 should show the new version of the page. HTCP purges (I assume we use those to purge mobile cache as well as normal squid) should be sent for http://en.m.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=Wikinews:Sandboxmobileaction=view_normal_site sine that url is advertised (Ditto for noimages version of the url), or some magic should happen on the caching end so that if the canonical page is purged, so are these variants. Url's like http://en.m.wikinews.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox should be redirected to the canoncial namespace name (so this becomes a non-issue), like we do in normal mediawiki -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 28419] Replace MD5 password hashing with WHIRLPOOL
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28419 Tyler Romeo tylerro...@gmail.com changed: What|Removed |Added CC||tylerro...@gmail.com --- Comment #14 from Tyler Romeo tylerro...@gmail.com 2011-09-27 18:38:11 UTC --- I was experimenting a while ago with Extension:SecurePasswords, which was an attempt to improve upon MediaWiki's default password hashing scheme. Many of the measures implemented were clearly unnecessary, but it got me thinking. First of all, I don't see how the speed of C code for a hashing algorithm v. the speed of PHP code means anything in terms of brute-forcing. Maybe I'm missing something (and if I am, please explain it). The rate of brute-forcing is only affected by the speed of the language the code is written in. Now since MediaWiki throttles password attempts, we can safely assume that any brute force attempt will only be successful if the attacker has direct database access anyway. And any attacker with any knowledge of programming languages is going to program their brute forcing application in C. So in the end the rate at which the attacker can brute force passwords has nothing to do with how fast PHP does it. It's not like the brute forcing application is racing against the MediaWiki installation to hash passwords. Among other things, I found that a PBKDF-style iteration scheme was about six times slower in PHP than in C, not orders of magnitude. With 32k iterations of SHA1, PHP took around 50-100 ms, while C (using OpenSSL's SHA1 implementation) took around 8 ms, or about 120 passwords/second. On a GPU, I got about 10,000 passwords a second. (With straight uniterated SHA1, I got 1.8 million passwords/second on a CPU, and 220 million on a GPU. I didn't salt, but salting would make no difference to the performance, since it only affects initialization.) With this in mind, I wouldn't say using PBKDF2 is that bad an idea, and to further the scheme, the current password hash (double MD5 hash) can be combined with an external salt as aforementioned before being put through PBKDF to add that extra layer of security. (Another idea that I personally think is unnecessary but was used in Extension:SecurePasswords is a method by which each user's password hash is done using a different HMAC hash, i.e., depending on some manipulation of the user ID, one user may have Whirlpool while another might have SHA-512. To see what I mean exactly you can look at the Extension:SecurePasswords source.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28419 --- Comment #15 from Aryeh Gregor simetrical+wikib...@gmail.com 2011-09-27 18:48:45 UTC --- (In reply to comment #14) First of all, I don't see how the speed of C code for a hashing algorithm v. the speed of PHP code means anything in terms of brute-forcing. Maybe I'm missing something (and if I am, please explain it). Suppose PHP executed hash algorithm 1 half as fast as C, and hash algorithm 2 a tenth as fast, for a fixed number of iterations. Suppose further that we choose the number of iterations so that executing it in PHP takes 50 ms, so as not to delay login noticeably. Then with algorithm 1, a C implementation will execute twice as fast as PHP, i.e., 25 ms/hash, or 40 hashes/s. With algorithm 2, it will be 5 ms/hash, or 200 hashes/s. The fact that algorithm 2 can be executed five times as fast in C relative to PHP, for the same number of iterations, translates into an attacker getting five times the throughput when cracking. It's all because we need to choose the number of iterations based on the speed in PHP, but the attacker gets to use C. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l
