[Bug 31935] New: Special:Cite: can't use tag citation anymore, because it gets escaped when MediaWiki:Cite_text is saved

2011-10-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31935

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 31935
 Summary: Special:Cite: can't use tag citation anymore,
because it gets escaped when MediaWiki:Cite_text is
saved
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: major
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Cite
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: an...@quovadis.com.ar
Classification: Unclassified

The summary says it all. Special:Cite features the tag citation, which works
correctly.

The problem is, when we save MediaWiki:Cite_text, the tag gets escaped (or
something) and then it appears as-is in Special:Cite.

See:
http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Cite_textaction=history

The page was saved in 2005 and Special:Cite worked perfectly until I saved the
page again on 2011-10-24.

I put severity major because it precludes users to get correct citations of
Wikipedia pages.

Thanks.

[Bug 31936] New: Enable WebFonts extension on all Tamil Wiki Projects

2011-10-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31936

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 31936
 Summary: Enable WebFonts extension on all Tamil Wiki Projects
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
 URL: http://ta.wikipedia.org
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Keywords: i18n, shell
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: WebFonts
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: srik@gmail.com
CC: gmeijs...@wikimedia.org,
santhosh.thottin...@gmail.com, sodabot...@gmail.com,
suryasalem2...@gmail.com
Depends on: 30506
Classification: Unclassified

We have tested the WebFonts extension on translatewiki.net and would like to
enable the extension on all Tamil wiki projects
(ta.wikipedia,ta.wikinews,ta.wikisource,ta.wiktionary,ta.wikibooks,ta.wikiquote)

Link to Community Concensus http://tawp.in/r/2r1f

But by default we dont want any of webfonts to be choosen since most users of
tamil wiki projects (including anon users) have tamil fonts installed. So
webfonts will help only those who dont have fonts and for others(incl anons)
webfonts wont create a different visual experience due to webfonts. Hence
making 30506 as a blocking bug for this bug.

Bonus points for being able to redirect from http to https links in order to
bump over to a live SSL login session when following generic links found
elsewhere. (may need another bug)
This was filed as bug 31432 and then duped to this bug. To accomplish this
securely, we would need to do the following:
* When logging in over HTTPS and the pref is set, set the login cookies
securely (as always) but set an insecure cookie that specifies that the user
wants HTTPS
* On every HTTP request, check for the presence of this cookie and redirect to
HTTPS if so. This also requires that the name of this cookie be added to the
XVO header.

It appears that Liangent (in filing bug 31432) and Ryan (through an in-person
conversation with me) both came up with the same plan separately.

The bad news is that extract2.php is a hideous piece of garbage. The good news
is that, for all its flaws, it really just pulls the Www.wiki$FOO.org

This seems to have been implemented in WikiEditor extension at some point, but
presumably is incomplete as it's not being used currently. See bug 28750, bug
22142 which make references to it.
That's right, WikiEditor has a proof-of-concept implementation of side-by-side
preview (well, it's really a preview tab: the preview isn't displayed side by
side but you can switch between wikitext, preview and diff modes using tabs at
the top of the edit box. But it essentially addresses the same problem) but it
was never polished to acceptable quality. IIRC the preview tab works reasonably
well, but the diff tab had some issues, and both had issues concerning new page
creations.

The code is still there, though, and probably still works as well as it did
when it was abandoned (about a year and a half ago), so anyone who's interested
could jump right in and polish it.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/centralnotice/wikipedia/en/centralnotice.js hasn't
been used in years. The entire root level centralnotice directory was deleted
from trunk a long time ago. How do we remove it from upload.wikimedia.org?

This stuff lives in /mnt/upload6/centralnotice . If it's really not used any
more, you can just shell into fenari and kill it. However, there seems to be
ton of things in there, lots of different centralnotice.js files in a 2-level
(wiki/language, it seems) directory structure and images here and there.

(Similar to how easy timeline doesn't support BIDI at all - bug 4030). CC'ing

might be interested in this (in the case this really is a lack of program

[Bug 31511] Unable to add/remove buttons from (classic) toolbar from a gadget after MW update

2011-10-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #15 from Roan Kattouw roan.katt...@gmail.com 2011-10-25 14:07:24

It seems the old toolbar's interface for adding buttons depends on loading
order too much. The WikiEditor toolbar's interface is a bit better in this
regard, but not much. These interfaces should be redesigned such that the
loading order either doesn't matter or must be toolbar-first-gadget-later (so
the gadget can depend on the toolbar and force the order to be that way), and
such that adding, removing and modifying buttons at any location in the toolbar
is supported.

[Bug 31499] WikiEditor articlePathRegex is invalid for internal link detection in 1.17.0

--- Comment #4 from Dan Barrett mediaw...@blazemonger.com 2011-10-25 14:19:14

I am using 1.17.0. Firebug gives the buggy results:

$.escapeRE(http://mywiki.com/wiki/$1;);
http\:\/\/mywiki\.com\/wiki\/\$\1

When I hit English Wikipedia and check against 1.18.0wmf, I get correct
results:

$.escapeRE(http://mywiki.com/wiki/$1;);
http://mywiki\.com/wiki/\$1;

There might still be a problem on English Wikipedia however, because of the
following use case:

0. Visit en.wikipedia.org and edit any page.
1. Click the Link button in the editor.
2. Enter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog as the link and click Insert link.
3. You *should* get a pop-up dialog that says The URL you specified looks like
it was intended as a link to another wiki page. Do you want to make it an
internal link? (message
MediaWiki:Wikieditor-toolbar-tool-link-lookslikeinternal), however no dialog
appears.

[Bug 31629] API uses weird * (star) key for the content property in JSON and PHP serialized formats

2011-10-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31629

--- Comment #4 from Roan Kattouw roan.katt...@gmail.com 2011-10-25 14:54:52
UTC ---
(In reply to comment #3)
It'd be interesting to figure out why it was picked
(perhaps there's a logical, rational reason, you can check SVN), but hindsight
is always going to be 20/20. Sometimes you have to make do with a bit of
imperfection. If the use of * is causing actual bugs somewhere, that'd be a
different story.

When the API was designed in 2006, XML was cool, so the API was primarily
designed for XML output. Other output formats seem to have been added as an
afterthought. In the years that followed, the world (or most of it, anyway),
realized XML is an inflexible piece of garbage and moved to JSON. However,
we're still stuck with the legacy of having to support XML which means that 1)
we can't do certain things in JSON because they can't be translated to XML and
2) we have things like the * thing that look good in XML and look like crap in
every other format on the planet.

I used to think the multi-format thing was cool, but I am now of the opinion
that an API 2.0 should output JSON only. It's the only format worth bothering
with, the others all suck to varying degrees.

Yeah, this is not a bug, just a documentation issue. You've hit a special case
of a redirect loop. When the API encounters a redirect loop, it gives up and
doesn't output a page tag for the redirect target (because there *is* no
redirect target in case of a loop).

From what I can see there is no HTML or MediaWiki extension citation tag, and
as far as I know never has been.

What did this do previously that you expect it to do now, exactly?

Well, it does trip signature checks in other zip tools:

Would be great if someone could make a new format similar to tagcloud
The only change would be, that the values are not printed bigger the more often
they occure but only the number is displayed
and the entries are sorted by the number, from many entries to less entries

As an example, I have pages for every county in the USA and there the name of
the County is given. Some Counties in different states have the same name and I
would like to find out which is the most popular.

I think that the files may be corrupt, as I've converted them once again using
ffmpeg2theora and the md5sums of the files uploaded to the Commons and those I
had on my local computer did not match.

I've uploaded the new files to a Wikimedia Poland toolserver at
http://tools.wikimedia.pl/~odder/videos/. Brion -- can you please check on
your local trunk install if they're OK? I am unfortunately not able to check
them on my local MediaWiki installation...

Please let me know if those are correct and if possible, please upload them to
Commons or let somebody else do it.

Thanks!

Well, in fact, there is a huge difference in size between the two pairs of
files.

*
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jan_Wr%C3%B3bel_-_Koniec_%C5%9Bwiata_nast%C4%85pi_%28wideo%29.ogv
is 1,42 GiB in size and
*
http://tools.wikimedia.pl/~odder/videos/Jan%20Wr%C3%B3bel%20-%20Koniec%20%C5%9Bwiata%20nast%C4%85pi%20%28wideo%29.ogv
is surprisingly 2,1 GiB.

while

*
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tomasz_Ganicz_-_Z_pami%C4%99tnika_weterana_%28wideo%29.ogv
is 914,46 GiB in size and
*
http://tools.wikimedia.pl/~odder/videos/Tomasz%20Ganicz%20-%20Z%20pami%C4%99tnika%20weterana%20%28wideo%29.ogv
is just 847 MiB.

I can't tell what made such a big difference, especially between the two Jan
Wróbel files, as I've been using the same command:

 ffmpeg2theora --nice 19 -a 10 -v 10 --optimize

to convert the original .mp4 files to the .ogv versions.

Yeah, those are all the generated javascript files for all the wikis as of the
last time they were generated (probably about 2 years ago). All of that stuff
is dynamic now. I imagine the images were for various banners. Now we host the
images on meta and commons, which is less secure, but more practical.

Here's a test branch that also triggers text selection mode after a

the weird-ass mouse cursor thing) but on my phone it's closer to the expected
behavior.

You might be willing to add the following code to single.php and archive.php in
your Victor directory just slightly below div class=post id=post-?php
the_ID(); ? in single.php and div class=post in archive.php:

 smallPosted by ?php the_author_posts_link() ? on ?php the_time('F jS,

A very similar code has been working quite fine on
http://tools.wikimedia.pl/blog/2011/09/ and
http://tools.wikimedia.pl/blog/2011/09/polska-wikipedia-ma-10-lat/ (that's a
beta version of the Wikimedia Poland blog).

[Bug 31943] New: Images are not showing when using ForeignDBRepo on MW 1.17

2011-10-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31943

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 31943
 Summary: Images are not showing when using ForeignDBRepo on MW
1.17
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.17.0
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Images and files
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: jean.luc.he...@gmail.com
CC: bawolff...@gmail.com, bryan.tongm...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified

After update from 1.16 to 1.17, images are not showing and, I have 2 error
messages in apache error log:

PHP Warning: mysql_query() expects parameter 2 to be resource, null given in
.../w/includes/db/DatabaseMysql.php on line 23

PHP Warning: mysql_real_escape_string() expects parameter 2 to be resource,
null given in .../w/includes/db/DatabaseMysql.php on line 316

I am using ForeignDBRepo and, it seems to be related.

1) Images are showing on the images repository (1.17 version)
2) Images are showing if using an MW 1.16 version connected to the 1.17 repo.
3) Images are not showing on an 1.17 connected to the 1.17 repo.

My issue is probably the same as this one describe here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Project:Support_desk/$wgUseSharedUploads_causes_trouble

Here is my ForeignDBRepo configuration:

$wgForeignFileRepos[] = array(
'class' = 'ForeignDBRepo',
'name' = 'base',
'url' = http://base.ekopedia.org/w/images;,
'directory' = '/var/www/base.ekopedia.org/w/images',
'hashLevels' = 2,
'dbType' = 'mysql',
'dbServer' = 'localhost',
'dbUser' = 'ekopedia',
'dbPassword' = ,
'dbFlags' = DBO_DEFAULT,
'dbName' = 'ekobase',
'tablePrefix' = ,
'hasSharedCache' = false,
'descBaseUrl' = 'http://base.ekopedia.org/Image:',

There does appear to _be_ a citation tag extension, but as far as I know it's
never been used on Wikimedia sites. No sign of it in any configuration files.
It also doesn't appear to be related to your usages here -- it seems to take
some sort of magical parameter syntax with key=value pairs separated by ||
double pipes, whereas you seem to just be wrapping text which sounds like you
were aiming for the HTML cite tag?

No, it should not; it even must not disallow the insertion of specific links.
There are a few reasons (you know these) for linking to redirects, and a hint
would make most of our editors to forget about
Wikipedia:REDIRECT#NOTBROKEN. It would be better to inform the user when
the page is a misspelling or a disambiguation, or that sort of thing.

Looks like cite was indeed intended. But what I find odd is that only the
current version of the page objects, printing the error message Invalid tag
extension name: citation. Previous versions show the tag as part of the page
text, and Special:Cite strips out the invalid tag. The error message only
appears on the current version of MediaWiki:Cite_text. Why is that happening?

Date and time templates inside Special:Cite (CURRENTDAY and family) refer
to the cited page last modification time. But if you enclose them around
citation tags, they refer to the actual current time (ie, time of last
access).

Here is the help page:

Anyway, I just checked and it seems to be working now. Thanks!

EXIF data from png files get poorly extracted.
I've cropped a jpg to its relevant content. The result I saved as png. From the
original file I copied the exifdata with exiftool -tagsFromFile
Since I saw that the EXIF data of the png file sown at the description page was
quite limited I uploaded the file as jpg - at which the EXIF is shown in all
it's beauty.

Please compare the result:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Museum_in_Frashër,_Albania.png
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Museum_in_Frashër,_Albania_tmp.jpg

I prefer to save worked photographs not as jpg to avoid loss of quality which
would happen at saving it is (as lossy compressed) jpg.

PNG does not support Exif. exiftool will try to convert as much as possible to
PNG text comments or to XMP, but most of the information is lost.

As exiftool explains: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

A special ExifTool option allows copying tags from one file to another. The
command-line syntax for doing this is -tagsFromFile SRCFILE. Any tags
specified after this option on the command line are extracted from source file
and written to the destination file. If no tags are specified, then all
writable tags are copied. This option is very simple, yet very powerful.
Depending on the formats of the source and destination files, some of tags read
may not be valid in the destination file, in which case they aren't written.

It might be that exiftool is writing the whole exif block into some PNG part,
but then that is not standard, and might not be recognizable by our software.

bawolff might now. I'll see if he can take a look.

Enhanced watchlist freezes the browser for 30 seconds after loading a big list

$.fx.off = true; :bugzilla:30401 doesn't help.

Need to wait ~20-30 seconds after load for my watchlist to collapse all entries
(yes, old computer - which should be enough!).

Freeze after loading my (big) watchlist. 800 edits from the last 2 days (in
Commons) to take 30 seconds to collapse (after the page is loaded)... This was
way faster before the 1.18 update.

 I have never seen a collapsed watchlist, you must have some gadget or script
 enabled that makes it collapse, and the slowness is caused by that script.

It is a feature which comes with MediaWiki, and it should be working for
everyone. For its documentation, see:
* meta:Help:Enhanced recent changes
* meta:Help:Watchlist#Expanded_Watchlist

Yes, it is this watchlist. Cannot imagine a watchlist without... Well, if it is
a separate thing then we should open up a bug (if there is not one already).

Anyway - done (to get things forward here): :bugzilla:31945 now.
