 Bug #: 33442
Summary: Creating pages creates an automatic summary, but still
prompts for summary.
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Page editing
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: johnnymrni...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified

When a user sets their preferences to prompt for edit summaries, page creation
still causes a prompt, even though a summary is automatically generated.
Contrast this to redirecting a page, which does not ask for a summary.
Desirable behavior would be for both to avoid the prompt. Surely, there can not
be any less ambiguous edit then creating a page. Briefly discussed at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29#Creating_a_page_should_not_demand_an_edit_summary

(In reply to comment #30)
That means our voice can be dumped into rubbish bin? Then what's the point of
 having the vote?

Its been publicly stated in several places for quite a long time that votes are
not taken in to consideration when deciding where development effort is put
(Popular opinion is taken into consideration somewhat, but not in the form of
votes, generally). The intention behind the voting module is to allow people
to have favourites lists of bugs for easy tracking.

Many considerations go into prioritizing bugs (or from what I understand, I
myself generally don't go around prioritizing bugs). How many people are
affected, how severely they are affected, how much people want the new
behaviour, how difficult the bug is to fix (especially, relative to how many
problems the bug is causing), etc.

In any case, its perfectly possible to search the bugzilla db by number of
votes (Even though we generally don't look at votes, some people do look at
what is voted high when looking for things to fix). Artificially inflating the
priority would just make the field useless, it won't make the bug any more
important. (About 50% of bugs are considered super-important to someone
somewhere in the universe, if everyone set there favourite bug to 'highest', it
would just make the priority field meaningless).

[Bug 835] syntax to transclude a page without the containing page inheriting categories, interlanguage links

--- Comment #68 from Bawolff bawolff...@gmail.com 2011-12-31 11:42:34 UTC ---
Created attachment 9788
  -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=9788
Add {{nometa:some templat|arg1|arg2|}} syntax to disable transcluding
categories and interlanguage links

Hmm, this is difficult to do, since the category/interlanguage links are
expanded after templates are expanded. Maybe the new parser work would make
doing such things easier (I'm not paying attention at all to whats happening
with that stuff, so I have no idea if it'd change things or not).

The best way of implementing this I could think of:
*Save all the interlangs and categories
*Parse the template (in a recursiveTagParse type of way), and put it in the
page at right spot
*Reset the interlangs/categories to the way they were before doing that.

So this patch adds a new parser func that looks more like its modifying the
template call then being an actual parser func. It looks like {{nometa:Some
template|args...}} (I didn't use a hash to make it look like int:, raw:, msgnw:
etc).

Personally I like the name nocat: better, but nometa: is more generic in terms
of applying to interlanguage links too. One minor issue is that it also stops
tracking categories. I also wasn't sure if it should deal with
{{DISPLAYTITLE:}}, {{DEFAULTSORTKEY:...}}, __NOTOC__, etc. As it stands, my
patch lets those types of behaviour switches through.

It feels mildly icky to save and reset parts of the parser output, and I'm
generally just nervous about things that touch the parser (Although this
doesn't directly touch it really), hence I'm posting this as a patch instead of
directly committing. (as an aside, if its decided this approach isn't an
acceptable solution, this can trivially be turned into an extension for those
who really want it).

So, thoughts?

Can you provide a community consensus link? Also please confirm that the Input
methods available for Gujarati in Narayam are verified using
 translatewiki.net.
Inscript and Transliteration is available now.

Wasn't aware of requirement to obtain community consensus. Will get it soon and
share the link. There are these 2 input methods available for Gujarati, that's
true, but how to verify this using translatewiki.net? All the translations are
made for Narayam extension.

In translatewiki.net. select the language as Gujarati, you may use the language
selector available on top of page or use Preferences page. Now you will see the
Narayam menu along with top user links, select a Gujarati input method and test
it by trying various input combinations. If you see any mistakes in the input
tool, please report as bug iin this bugzilla.

(In reply to comment #12)
r77725 at least makes images on shared repos show up as struck-out bluelinks
instead of redlinks in the output. It does nothing to fix the actual problem,
but at least now you can visually tell the false positives apart from the
 actually missing files.

Given that this has been achieved, I wonder whether the bug cannot be closed by
simply adding a filter option to hide the struck-out bluelinks? I have no
insight into the code, but it seems the filter could be added with very little
performance loss, provided we don't expect the precise number of returns and
the filter automatically switches to a high browsing interval (2000-5000), and
adds an explanation like:

2000/ACTUAL NUMBER files have been found that are not present in the local
wiki. Of these, some or many are available in a shared file repository. These
are not shown below. As a result, the number or missing files shown is
variable.

This may be not ideal, but clearly better than the present consistent, but
rather useless behavior. Who is likely to browser through 100s of pages of
struck-out blue links to find the truly missing red-links? In fact on metawiki
nobody seem to be doing this, so many broken links exist...

Mark: you changed priority from Highest to Low without arguing - I think it
would be better interaction with the community if you could argue or comment
why. In some of your changes that may be evident from previous discussion, here
I think not. You may well have much more information than Jan Kucera. Please

[Bug 33444] New: Other languages list for articles

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 33444
Summary: Other languages list for articles
   Product: Wikimedia Mobile
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: generic
AssignedTo: tf...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: e...@wp.pl
Classification: Unclassified

Currently I see no way to switch - or to be more exact - to see in which other
language Wikipedias a given article is available.

Use case (current situation):
# Search for AUSCANNZUKUS in my language (this is PL)
# I see there is not much info.
# I don't see a way to see if this is available on EN, so I change to
non-mobile.
# After loading non-mobile page I can switch to English Wikipedia article.

I think a select drop-down a top of the page would work fine here as it doesn't
take too much space and it is handled very nicely or at least correctly in all
phones I've seen. Go button should only be visible for those phones that
doesn't support JavaScript. Otherwise after selecting an option one should be
redirected to the page in selected language.

[Bug 33445] New: margin-right:0 for table.wikitable

2011-12-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33445

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 33445
   Summary: margin-right:0 for table.wikitable
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: trivial
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: foma...@googlemail.com
Classification: Unclassified

At the moment wikitable has a right margin of 1em:

 table.wikitable { margin-right: 1em }

This prevents a table can use the full width.

Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Version#Installed_extensions

I suggest a right margin of 0:

 table.wikitable { margin-right: 0 }

A visual change can occur on left floating tables:

{| class=wikitable style=float:left
|-
| left floating table
|}
Example surrounding text right of the table.

Floating objects should always take care about their margins to the surrounding
text.

An other visual change occurs on nested tables:

{|
|-
|
{| class=wikitable
|-
| left table
|}
|
{| class=wikitable
|-
| right table
|}
|}

The gap between the tables reduce to the defaults: cellpadding=1
cellspacing=2. I think this is acceptable.

Additionally I suggest to reduce the top margin and the bottom margin from 1em
to 0.5em:

 table.wikitable { margin: 0.5em 0 }

This is an attempt to focus an another small improvement steps with respect to
the general concerns argued in Bug 6220. This bug seems to be impossible to
resolve. Bug 6220 has achieved progress insofar, that the Wanted-but-not-wanted
files (files that are not present locally, but present in a shared repository)
are shown as struck-out bluelinks instead of redlinks in the output.

Given that this has been achieved, I wonder whether the bug cannot be closed by

a) I certainly miss bug 23816 if nobody is referring to it. Thank you for doing

b) There are certainly multiple communities with different opinions here.

c) I don't see through this at all. Either the bug should be closed, and a new

file links that make this functionality less likely to be essential, but
smaller Wikis can substantially improve their quality by fixing these errors. I
believe many who voted for this bug see this as an important function, even if
Nemo_bis does not. It is widely agreed that the present implementation is
broken. The bluelink-solution is a very good step, but it is still offputting
potential users (the first pages are usually all clean). I am opening a new Bug

I think this needs to be better documented. Is it already somewhere where I
overlooked it? Please add some documentation on mediawiki.org - I am not sure
where, but

Release notes only mentions:
* (bug 23816) A tracking category is now added for any pages with broken
images.

I figured out that the attachment uses Mediawiki:broken-file-category which
needs to be executed on local wiki to find the local string. Some results:

However, the basic assumption that it is easier to work by page than by file
is, in my opinion, erroneous. A missing file often occurs on dozens of pages.
Look at Metawiki (there for multilinguality mostly). In other cases it is
because repo files are renamed without keeping redirects. Or, out of old habit,
deleted and re-uploaded under a different name.

In cases where a file is missing on dozens of pages, I consider an improved
Special:WantedPages desirable.

Since mw 1.18 a tracking category is available that lists pages with broking
file links (missing images etc.) by page (Special:WantedFiles lists them by

The name of the tracking category is hard to find since not integrated into the

I think this needs to be better documented. Is it already somewhere where I
overlooked it? Please add some documentation on mediawiki.org - I am not sure
 where, but

AFAIK tracking categories are not documented on mww (or anywhere else,
actually), they're left to local categorization. Which is not very good, but
that's bug 1 I guess.

I figured out that the attachment uses Mediawiki:broken-file-category which
needs to be executed on local wiki to find the local string.

Not really, you just have to follow the usual system:
[[:translatewiki:Special:PrefixIndex/MediaWiki:Broken-file-category/]].

Is it really useful to reimplement the current syntax? It requires writing a
new parser in PHP for (another) non-standard format.

If we instead switched to XML, not only could we use existing XML parsers in
PHP, but also the obstacles to (JavaScript) gadgets like bug 27157 would be
lowered immensely, and some potential applications further down the line (print
formatting, data extraction, etc.) could also profit.

It would probably make sense to not have one extension accept two types of
syntax, so I'd propose a new extension and a bot-with-human-review conversion.

It appears that no place exists where system provided tracking categories are
listed.

Knowledge about and documentation of these tracking categories is sparse (see
e.g. discussion at end of Bug 23816). A central point of access to system
provided categories would be beneficial. This applies less to the major
Wikipedias, but to Wikis with a smaller community both within and outside of
WMF.

Something like Special:SystemTrackingCategories or
Special:AutomaticTrackingCategories would be desirable.

Not really, you just have to follow the usual system:
 [[:translatewiki:Special:PrefixIndex/MediaWiki:Broken-file-category/]].

(translatewiki interwiki link is not a feature of mediawiki, although present

Yes, rather than checking only your own translation, you can find all
applicable translation under:

However, if logged in, you need to look under the native language of the

Babel extension automatically creates its categories, perhaps this can be done

btw, just to clarify - I can commit said patch, I'm just not sure if this
  is a
bug we want to fix, or if its a wontfix type thing due to duplication (with
  the
  rather borked) special:wantedfiles.
Perhaps we could do this, and then also have wantedpages display the results
 of
the category (basically fixing two things in one then because a category
would be easier if any bots wanted to access it I would assume).

No, bots can access querypages just as easy as categorymembers. Both have APIs:

I'm suggesting WONTFIX. Aside from the QueryPage system not supporting this
mechanism efficiently, it could also lead to empty results. This is a very
expensive query that is cached.

Instead of filtering out links that are currently blue links based on a list
that is cached sounds like a bad idea.

Already:
* bug 6220: Actually support shared repositories the right way (this is the
underlaying bug)
* bug 16112: Refresh Special:Wanted* pages on WMF wikis

And, if you just want a list of pages that have missing file links, there's a
tracking category for that (bug 23816)

--- Comment #3 from Gregor Hagedorn g.m.haged...@gmail.com 2011-12-31
19:19:07 UTC ---
My non-programmer analysis is that the present page is not very useful or at
least unnecessarily overloaded with 99.9% recognizable false positive. Adding a
simple CSS display:none, supported by the proposed message would resolve the
usability problem, while not adding any extra server load. One could probably
already write a lidel CSS rule with display:none, provided some additional
supporting class that limits this to Special:WantedFiles. Technically, the
request is to add a class on the OL that identifies which special page it is
(currently it says only special) and add a simple CSS rule. The current html
is:

li
dela title=File:Redirectltr.png
href=/wiki/File:Redirectltr.pngFile:Redirectltr.png/a/del
rlm;lrm; (a title=Special:WhatLinksHere
href=/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHeretarget=File%3ARedirectltr.png689
links/a)
/li

I fail to see the drawback. It seems to me, that without any expense to the WMF
servers the browser could do the work that currently the human eye is supposed
to do.

The problem with bug 6220 is that some believe Special:WantedFiles should
disappear altogether, or a least it has Low (MAH) or Lowest (Nemo_bis) priority
- meaning its likelihood of being fixed is very small (or at least whichever
multiple of 6.5 years it is unfixed so far you like).

The present proposal means to be a no-expense stop-gap, not a huge permanent
solution.

Please WONTFIX again if you are not convinced, I will not revert...

Given that the summary of the discussion in LQT has its own page and it's no
longer just something written on top of a section, to complete preload a
preloadsummary parameter is also needed to manage all sorts of requests
pages, where often section (thread) status templates need to be used and hence
preload with their initial values.

Or rather a tracking category for tracking categories. :-p
Babel extension automatically creates its categories, perhaps this can be done
with tracking categories as well, adding some default category.

If we did this, we would probably also want to add __HIDDENCAT__ to such
categories.

Thanks for your report. PostgreSQL 8.1 reached its end of life in November
2010. While MediaWiki 1.16 may have been released before that time, this bug
is now a dead horse.

[Bug 18861] Search should index template expansion

2011-12-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18861

--- Comment #14 from orenbochman orenboch...@gmail.com 2011-12-31 22:23:17
UTC ---
As I see it the problem is that the search indexes are based on analyzing the
wiki source and updated page source and the indexer never sees the final
output.

The simplest fix, mentioned above, was my original plan. Which would be to
fetch the generated output from cache. This would solve the wikisource use case
of the page namespace and the Wiktionary use case where text such as inflection
table is generated by a template.

functionally it can be implemented as follows:
1. Adding to the index a wikiRenderedField to the indexer.
2. This field which would be tokenized but not stored.
3. The analysis could be done using Apache Tika.
4. In some scenarios the field would be the size of a book and may adversely
affect the ranking of documents throughout the index. (a situation where 1% of
the documents contain 95% percent of the search lexicon)

The alternative depends on the progress with the new parser. If it is
successful and can be used as a library it would be integrated into search as a
new WikiSourceAnalyzer which will capture the full details of both source and
output with many side benefits.

I've now noticed (read about) that you can press the W icon to see the option I
was talking about... If I wouldn't find news about this feature I would
probably never figure this out. And I don't think its just because I'm ill now
;-).

A good way to hint that the icon is a button would be to add a down arrow
beside it. But I think it wouldn't be a was of space if there would simply be
other languages text label below search box that would show language options.

[Bug 33450] New: Wrap automatic numbering for section headings in a container with a specific class

2011-12-31 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33450

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 33450
Summary: Wrap automatic numbering for section headings in a
container with a specific class
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: User preferences
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: wal...@email.com
CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified

Currently we can suppress the automatic numbering on TOCs by defining the CSS
rule .tocnumbers { display:none; }. However, when the preference
Auto-numbering of section headings is activated, the numbers on the headings
themselves aren't wrapped in a separate class that allows them to be hidden (or
otherwise styled).

Ideally, the text of the heading should also be wrapped in a classed container,
as happens with the TOC.
