Since the string is right there in the input field, do we even need to repeat
it?

[Bug 38009] enable mobile redirect broken on iOS

If it helps, here are a bunch of common.js experiments
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Mwarren_us/common.js

The simplest working javascript I found was this:

$('a[href$=toggle_view_mobile]').click(function(){
 document.cookie = 'stopMobileRedirect=false; domain=.wikipedia.org;'
 + 'path=/; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 00:00:00 GMT;'
   });

Unfortunately, none of my attempts succeeded using $.cookie().

If you delete a single translation unit page, the translation page won't be
updated to reflect this until another translation unit page is edited.
The easiest way is actually to do it yourself by replacing the translation with
the source text and deleting the unit page only after it.

Niklas sad it's a bug (now removing from docs).

[Bug 38475] anonymous actions being identified as coming from the feedback tool

2012-08-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #5 from Fut.Perf. fut.p...@googlemail.com 2012-08-16 07:24:56 UTC
---
Just pasting my original bug description from the duplicate filing in here,
because I think it's a bit clearer:

When an anon user marks somebody else's feedback post as useful or
non-useful, their action is shown in the activity log not under their IP
address, but under the generic name Article Feedback V5, e.g. Article
Feedback V5 marked this post as helpful on 12:58, 14 August 2012. This is bad,
because it implies that Article Feedback V5 is some kind of uniform central
authority that judges feedback posts. Please change this to either show the IP
address as the agent of the action (just like logged-in user names are shown),
or some other generic string, e.g. A non-logged-in user marked this post...

From Sarah Stierch:

I nominated an article for deletion and when I checked the template on the talk
page of the editor who created the page, I noticed there was no wikilink to the
article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ndivhuworann#Speedy_deletion_nomination_of_Gabriel_Temudzani

You can see, compared to other templates, there are often links. But, alas,
there is not for the new page triage alert.

Thanks :)

-Sarah

See related bug #39411, marked as duplicate, because it relates to the same
issue.

Alter the placement of the Curation Toolbar
Instead of it being positioned absolutely, it should be positioned
based on the placement of the article window to allow us to put it higher while
simultaneously avoiding interfering with the CentralNotice extension and
suchlike.

Filed by Oliver Keyes via email.

I agree with Oliver that if we have room to go higher with the Curation bar
placement, we should aim to nudge it up, at the same time that we adjust the
position of the flyouts.

Something must have changed with this special page since my report. I am not
sure though. However, in addition to what I already reported all special
properties are listed now, regardless it they are in use or not.

In the meantime I think that special properties should not be listed at all on
this special page, regardless of their status. I believe that this page should
only list user created properties.

First of all, the term tags should also be avoided, because it is also a part
of the English Wikipedia jargon. It's better to say something like maintenance
templates or warning templates. This issue deserves its own bug, actually.

The best and simplest thing is to write what actually happens: Where does this
message appear, what will happens if the user will press the associated button,
etc.

Add your feedback mockup from Pau Giner

A number of users have asked for an easier way to add article feedback from the
feedback page (right now, you have to click on 'Article', then scroll down to
the bottom of the page, which only power users are likely to consider.

To solve this problem, we propose an 'Add your feedback' button at the top
right corner of the feedback page (in the same place as where the survey button
used to be), as proposed in this mockup from Pau Giner:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30377416/prototypes/feedback-tool/article-feedback/add/article-feedback-page-add-step2.png

From a development purpose, we seem to have two options:
1) simply re-use the same code we already built for the overlay mode we used
before from the 'Improve this page' links. That code has been fully tested and
I suspect it should be really easy to port it over to the feedback page;
2)use a single-screen form that shows all the feedback form fields together at
once (instead of spread out over multiple screens), as proposed by Pau.

I leave it up to Matthias to let us know if it's easy or hard to create the
single-screen feedback form layout Pau proposed. Ideally, we would aim to spend
no more than half a day on this feature -- or hold off.

If we decide to go with the single-screen option, I propose these copy changes:

* Say 'Add your feedback' instead of 'Improve this page'.

* Say 'Add your feedback' instead of 'Add feedback' for the form title.

* Consider adding 'in this page' at the end of the question, with a link to the
article in a new tab or window:

'Did you find what you were looking for in this article?'

* The font size for the '+ Add your feedback' top button could be a bit
smaller, so it doesn't dominate the top of the page so much, more like the size
of what we now have for the survey button.

* I also recommend adding 'your' to make it clear that it's about you.

The term tag to refer to maintenance templates, such as templates that
request deletion, notability clarification or adding references is a jargon
word that is used by some English Wikipedia editors. The word tag usually has
a rather different meaning in other websites.

Translators of this extension cannot be expected to be familiar with this
jargon. They are likely to translate it using the word for tag in their
language and thus confuse the extension's users.

The word tag must be replaced in all message by words such as maintenance
template, cleanup template, article message template etc. This will be
clear to English Wikipedia editors and to everybody else.

Screenshot of the session menu being cropped under Safari

I am talking about the 2 menus at the right, Sessions and Users.

On Safari Version 5.1.7 (6534.57.2), the top left of each menu is aligned with
the bottom left of the relative button. So, a big part of the menu is out of
the windows. Vertical scrolling that became available when the menu opened does
not go far enough (you can scroll, but not enough to display the whole width of
the menu). (see screenshot)

Same on Chrome Version 21.0.1180.79

On firefox 14.0.1, the right of the menu is aligned with the right of the
window. The whole width of the menu is displayed. But some horizontal scrolling
is still necessary.

I guess this is an issue with mixing the iFrame container and the window
container in the JS/CSS.

It took us (IT engineers) 30 seconds to understand that one page can have many
pads (sessions?) opened at once.
Our mistake was to share the address from the browser address bar
(index.php?title=User:Bedhedaction=edit) instead of the pad address provided
within the editor
(index.php?title=User%3ABedhedaction=editcollaborate=truepadId=81).

This feature is great and very powerful, but perhaps too much.
Also, even if I see the benefits of sessions, I wonder if the related use cases
are so important, in comparison to the possible UX issues, and also merging
issues.

On top of my head : multiple sessions should be an advanced option. Users
editing one page share only one default pad. By expanding the sessions menu, a
user can then click a link that explicitly says Open a new session. Once he
did, he then have the relative pad url available.

And to conclude, a choice should be made between PAD and SESSION, using two
words to say one thing is confusing.

If a page can be edited by anybody, it should be the same for the relative
pad(s). There is a huge UX gap between:
- clicking a link to a page and starting to collaborate
- clicking a link to a page and starting to write and understanding this is not
real time collaboration and asking around and finding out registration is
necessary and registering and coming back to the page to finally start
collaborating.

[Bug 39414] ULS is unusable when the browser is resized

2012-08-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39414

--- Comment #1 from Pau Giner pgi...@wikimedia.org 2012-08-16 11:33:28 UTC ---
The main problem is that the general window scroll does not affect the selector
(since it is using fixed positioning). Being able to use the global scroll
(e.g., using absolute positioning for the selector) will solve the problem.
This probably requires to update the positioning logic when the user opens the
selector and resizes the window.

The other solutions commented introduce some issues:
- Making the window movable may make interaction more complex for some cases
(e.g., user scrolling the list with a touch device).

- Regarding shrinking, the selector already adapts in size to a point before
elements start collapsing and language labels are no longer fully displayed.

[Bug 36772] Article Feedback - Supporting feedback on help pages

2012-08-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36772

--- Comment #6 from Matthias Mullie mmul...@wikimedia.org 2012-08-16 11:43:51

Is it possible to automatically show AFT on all help pages? If so, can you
send us a link?
Yes: I have split up the bucketing per namespace, enabled it on 10% on
NS_MAIN % 100% on NS_HELP. This means AFT will automatically appear on all
help pages without needing to add aby category to it.

I've discussed the CTA1 issue with Siko Bouterse, and she is prepared to go
ahead with the feature as it stands today, with the understanding that we only
have CTA1 enabled about half the time for readers.
Come to think of it, there's an additional check in place making sure that
pages that readers have no permission to edit, will not show CTA1. It'll only
appear on pages to users that have permissions to edit.

Howie also asked if we could make sure to somehow tag feedback for help pages,
so we can easily differentiate it from article feedback later on
The page_id is being stored in the feedback tables. Joining this with the
page table will let us know the namespace the article is in. We don't have to
 save any more details.

How easy would it be to enable AFT on that namespace as well
Enabled it on NS_PROJECT (the Wikipedia namespace) now as well, at 0%. It
won't automatically show up on any page, unless the whitelisting category is
 added.

Updated commits on Gerrit prototype.

Examples:
http://prototype.wikimedia.org/release-en/Help:Test - Help page _with_
whitelist - should show AFT
http://prototype.wikimedia.org/release-en/Help:Test2 - Help page _without_
whitelist - should show AFT
http://prototype.wikimedia.org/release-en/Wikipedia:Test - Project page _with_

In which cases it ImageGallery used not in the content? Because, if it's only
on special pages, you can just use the page content language (i.e. parser
language) because that is the same as the user language on special pages.

Also category pages at the bottom of the page. (However in that case it is also
not passed a parser object as well.)

Pushed to Gerrit (https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/20009/) prototype.

If you're not bucketed in the 10% to view this CTA, you can test it by adding
?aftv5_cta=6 to the url, like so:
prototype.wikimedia.org/release-en/Golden-crowned_Sparrow?aftv5_cta=6

Just let me know if the copy should change.

Also, I enabled it at 10% by lowering the odds of CTA1 from 50% to 40%.
If the 10% should be sought somewhere else, just ping me ;)

[Bug 13627] The move reason field should be one line only

--- Comment #24 from Bawolff bawolff...@gmail.com 2012-08-16 12:11:52 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #23)
Seriously? Why do you want to force users to use interface they are not happy
with. I might as well suggest people wanting his multi-lined to use a java
script hack. It is bad enough for users to get used to the MediaWiki markup
 now
you want them to learn how to use java script to modify interface.

I was being a bit sarcastic in comment 22. I don't want people to modify the
interface with javascript. I want the interface to be reasonable and usable to
all people. For the same reason I don't want user preferences to trigger subtle
changes in the interface (Otherwise we would have 10 billion prefs, and
usability should not be a preference, etc).

I also do not want to force people to use an interface they are not happy with.
However at the same time it is unclear if the change suggested (making it a
single line for everyone) would make more or less people unhappy. Thus I feel
such a change should be done cautiously.

Similarly, I am not neccesarily opposed to making the box one line, adding a
drop down for an auto-reason, and having some extra whitespace between the
reason fields and the move target field. I think such an approach may possibly
make everyone happy. Or perhaps it won't. I suppose we should make mock-ups and
talk to the users and so on.

I've just doublechecked on
http://prototype.wikimedia.org/release-en/Special:ArticleFeedbackv5/Golden-crowned_Sparrow
and got correctly linked to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_Feedback/Help/Monitors#Feedback_page
Could you test if it still malfunctions on other browsers?

--- Comment #8 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2012-08-16 12:31:11 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #7)
This has some overlap with bug 23580.

This bug should probably focus on the hook/event that happens on
domready/preview and whether it should be a hook or a dom event. While the
other bug focuses on the introduction of a mw.hooks for anything we need it
 for.

I agree. I've renamed this bug to implement a hook for article ready (which
will be executed with div id=bodyContent/div once by default, and can be
re-triggered by other scripts when and as appropiate.

Made bug 23580 a dependency. As we'll need
 mw.hooks.run( 'article.load', .. );

.. in the page output in order for
 mw.hooks.add( 'article.load', function ( $content () {
 ...;
 } );
 to work.

Just tried it and yes, it is possible to duplicate the links.

I'd suggest taking a look at and reusing the old client code before
refactoring, since a number of things that were solved in the client do not
work anymore. This, but also noexternalinterlang parser function, and probably
more.

[Bug 39426] New: Skins should have a way of overriding interface images used in core like the redirect arrow

2012-08-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 39426
Summary: Skins should have a way of overriding interface images
used in core like the redirect arrow
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.20-git
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: User interface
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: bawolff...@gmail.com
CC: krinklem...@gmail.com,
mediawiki-b...@nadir-seen-fire.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

See the thread at support desk:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Project:Support_desk/Need_to_replace_redirect_file_File:Redirect_arrow_without_text.svg

Basically someone asked how to change the redirect arrow that displays with
#redirect syntax so that it works with their green on black skin.

I advised them to just replace the image file, as we don't really have any
method of overriding those images in a skin (short of some really hacky CSS).

However, really skins should be able to override such images, as we don't want
skin designers patching core.

Perhaps some method in the Skin class getURLForImage, core code does stuff like
$context-getUser()-getSkin()-getURLForImage( 'redirect arrow' ) which
returns the appropriate url of either redirectarrowltr or redirectarrowrtl
depending on the directionality of interface (Thus as added bonsu, hiding
details of LTR vs RTL from core parts).

[Bug 13631] Wikimedia should become an OpenID provider

--- Comment #12 from Tyler Romeo tylerro...@gmail.com 2012-08-16 13:21:25 UTC
---
(In reply to comment #0)
Too facilitate verification of a Wikimedia user for external tools without the
need to give the password to that tool, Wikimedia should become an OpenID
 provider.

(In reply to comment #6)
This would also greatly benefit the Toolserver. Right now, toolserver tools
can't be personalized without some major effort, and the hassle for users to
create an extra account. Using OpenID would also allow simple implementation
 of
opt-in services, which are using nasty workarounds right now. --

OpenID is not the proper tool for either of these. OpenID is made so that users
can use their identity on one site to log in to another site. If our aim to
allow users to let external tools access their account without a password,
OAuth would be the thing to enable.

(In reply to comment #4)
 Created use-case (and learning resource):
 http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Ethical_Management_of_the_English_Language_Wikipedia/Ethics_and_MediaWiki/Use_cases#OpenID_at_Wikimedia:_account.openid.wikimedia.org

None of these use cases necessarily involve Wikipedia becoming an OpenID
provider. In both use cases, they would both work just fine if the user had an
OpenID identity somewhere else. What they really depend on is login using
OpenID, which is in bug 9604.

From what I can see, there is not really a point of making WMF an OpenID
provider. The only reason you would want to is to allow users to log in to
other sites (StackOverflow, for instance) using their Wikipedia account as an
identity. I do not think this is the intended goal, nor should it be. Login
through OpenID, on the other hand, is probably the better solution (along with
OAuth).

I would say this is good, but we shouldn't give full user privileges because
 we
can't apply account creation blocks as effectively and, as our Wikipedia
article says, there is a higher phishing risk. I would suggest limiting the
privileges to user, non-autoconfirmed, and give them a username as
idusername@providername. Full privileges simply require creating a local
 username and password.

Are these limitations still applicable? If so why? (I cannot seem to find the
article mentioned explaining why.)

[Bug 30713] Implement JavaScript hook for article ready

--- Comment #9 from Daniel Friesen mediawiki-b...@nadir-seen-fire.com

Btw, page load and preview load aren't the only situation where we want to fire
this event.

For example, say an extension implements something like tabs that loads
contents of other tabs or whatnot using ajax. We want the extension to fire
this on the dom node that was just inserted in the page so that we get things
like collapsibility in that area.

That's why I went with 'content' rather than 'article' since this really
shouldn't be only when a full article is loaded, but when any new user content
shows up in the dom.

User Trijnstel also requested this. He additionally added:

It's not my intention to (automatically?) check all abusefilter logs (which
was something the abusefilter-private right did). I would like to see the logs
itself in the edits section of the CheckUser form. For example: if you check
a user on his edits, you'll get his regular edits, any log actions such as
account creation and emails he send. But you doesn't see the abuse log entries.
And that's something I would like to see in the results. Now the log entries
are completely ignored, just as if they didn't exist. You don't see them via
the edits, nor do you see them via the users section. So I don't want to check
on abuse log entries - like IP's/Edits/Users/Abuse Log; I only want to have the
abuse log entries visible in the edits section.

[Bug 39428] New: undo/restore may fail due to sitelink conflicts

If item A once linked to dewiki:Foo but now links to dewiki:Bar, and item B now
links to dewiki:Foo, item A can not be restored to the old revision that points
to dewiki:Foo.

This type of global-consistency conflict should be checked when preparing the
undo/restore operation, just like local conflicts that arise from later edits
of the item. The respective change to the sitelinks should be omitted, and this
should be reported to the user.

Implementation note: care should be taken that this works on the restore as
well as the undo codepath - the restore codepath so far bypasses checks for
conflicting edits.

Reminder: fix broken error message that is shown when a sitelink conflict
causes save to fail.

[Bug 39426] Skins should have a way of overriding interface images used in core like the redirect arrow

Btw, it's just $context-getSkin() there's no getUser() involved.

We probably will need something like this. Though it will be a little tricky
with the parser. We'll definitely need to fragment the cache by skin for this.

In that area we're going to need to double check the code we use to deal with
parser keys. We are really going to want to make sure we have code working that
will understand when to fragment and when not to fragment.

Btw, it's just $context-getSkin() there's no getUser() involved.

Ah, I was thinking back to the days of $wgUser-getSkin(). Clearly I haven't
done enough MediaWiki coding recently

I think that work is mostly done - we already have lots of code to deal with
$parser-getUserLangObj() situation. However in this particular case, I don't
think that's even neccesary as redirect pages aren't currently saved in the
parser cache (Which is kind of odd given we still seem to parse on each view,
guess not too many people visit them) and the arrow is added outside of the
parsing process.

Example http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Animated_analog_SVG_clock.svg

If an svg is animated, that fact is shown in the image metadata box. However
its not really formatted very well. Furthermore, all other animated formats we
reflect this fact in the little subtitle under the image, not the metadata box.
I think we should do that for svgs.

Additionally it doesn't seem that the metadata box respects metadata-fields
message properly.
