Mockup of a contextual bubble from search

AHAH! Trying to find the proper placement for the Not what you were looking
for? messages was tricky.

First I thought of putting it in the subtitle area. However that varied by
skin. And it was obscure and potentially not user friendly.

Then I ended up implementing it using the notification area. But that's still
not entirely an expected place to find it.

But I just thought of a better way to implement it. A contextual bubble coming
from the search area.

On history pages for pages on your watchlist some revisions are marked updated
since my last visit. This used to be reset when you viewed the most recent
revision of the page (either by visiting the page itself, or viewing the last
revision using its oldid, or viewing diff with the last revision).

This has (at least at Wikimedia Commons) changed recently so that visiting old
revisions and diffs not including the last revision also resets the updated
markings.

I think it was better the way it was before. If you have not viewed the last
revision there are still changes you have not seen. That should be marked in
the history page and in your watchlist.

[Bug 41760] New: Minor edit checkbox seems to be ticked as default sometimes!

 Bug #: 41760

sometimes!
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED

  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Page editing

ReportedBy: wiki.pe...@icloud.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Several of my recent (non-minor) edits are being marked as minor (because I
don't notice that the checkbox is ticked before I hit save ...). It would
appear that the checkbox seems to be pre-ticked when the previous edit I made
to that page was a minor one. Doesn't seem to be pre-ticked the first time I
edit a page, or when unticked on the previous edit. This makes it appear that
I'm marking non-muinor edits as minor deliberately - which is not a good thing!
Can someone please fix/investigate?

[Bug 41635] When editing sitelinks, target pages are suggested in a misleading order

--- Comment #5 from jeb...@gmail.com 2012-11-04 10:28:51 UTC ---
The two scoring functions I know works on this kind of problem are one for
sorting on full terms sort all found terms on prefixed matches on probability
or inverse document frequency or a similar function, possibly with some
weighting on shorter terms to make absolute matches go first, and one for
sorting on boundary effects sort all found terms on the probability that
syllables start within the right side of the boundary (aka within the prefix)
and continues into the found term, possibly with some simplification with
Markov chains.

The first form is the most common, and as I recall some comments aso the form
used in the live search on Wikipedia, aka the existing Lucene-search.

We could allow wikisyntax in the descriptions, but I think this will be better
solved by linking to entities in the statements.

If we should choose to use wikisyntax we probably need a stripped version that
can be made clickable.

The code iThe Man Between/i do not show up as italic text in the title
 of
the item. Changing it to ''The Man Between'' didn't solve the issue:
 https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q3092diff=314190oldid=249680

We can allow limited tagging in the field, but then we must strip tagging for
term search and similar. Some kind of stripping would imply rewriting the
string, and this could be quite complex.

The only allowed tags would be i and b, and only some characters would be
legal in sub and sup.

Oh! Can't someone just make it possible to reset just that one preference? I
looked for it, but it wasn't there - and I certainly don't want to reset ALL
 my
 preferences!

But to reset only one, you have to tell the system which preference you want to
reset -- but if you can find that preference you can simply flip its setting...

To help you find and confirm it: it should be located in the Advanced options
section in Editing tab.

Also, it's not marking all of them as minor by default - only
those ones where the previous edit was marked as minor.

Is your browser pre-filling it from previously submitted form?

But they *do* short-circuit now, though not in a proper way.

I just see some filters only saying `cond1 cond2` where cond1 is very cheap
and is false for most of edits (for example, user_name == 'FooBar') but cond2
is some more expensive consume more condition limit than expected (in
short-circuited evaluation).

Inside a gallery it is impossible to go to the file description page:

1. Click on the gallery thumbnail. TMH opens a window.
2. Click on Menu
3. Try to click on the title. It is a link but without any reaction

It works well with standard [[File:foo.ogv|thumb|...]] embedding.

On the english wikipedia that option isn't appearing in [[Special:Preferences]]
for me, and it's not hidden by CSS or removed by JS.

That option is appearing using the API (search for minordefault):

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=querymeta=userinfouiprop=optionsformat=jsonfm

So you probably can change it with the API:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=helpmodules=options

If some options are hidden (
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgHiddenPrefs ), they should probably do
not apply at all instead of still being applied to users that changed them.

Note that some edits are not allowed to be minor, like new section creation or
the creation of a new page. That would explain the randomness.

Also note that labels are used for identifying the entity, so html tags (or
other encoding) will break lookup if they are not properly removed before
storing to the term cache.

That basically means: Don't add tags and hope it will work as an correct
untagged label, it won't without work additional code.

What if we move

the div.overlay-win k-menu ui-widget-content with the controls, below the
videoHolder and below the timed text, and remove the z-index from from the
settings div. It will then naturally be positioned on top of the video. Which
is always better than mucking about with the z-index.

I've run across a nasty bug in Semantic Forms (2.5.1) while doing an autoedit
via the API where the autoedit changes the first character of another Template
field that was not part of the intended edit.

This is the autoedit command I'm executing (via python-simplemediawiki)

c = wiki.call({'action': 'sfautoedit', 'form': 'Book', 'target': title,
'Book[Cover]': 'Cover for ' + book['printouts']['Has Amazon ASIN'][0] +
'.jpg'})

It is targeting this Form:

http://rwbookclub.com/wiki/Form:Book

The behavior is very odd. It does update the Book[Cover] field as intended, but
it changes the value of any *dates* in the templates.

Here is an example diff:

http://rwbookclub.com/w/index.php?title=Wired_for_War:_The_Robotics_Revolution_and_Conflict_in_the_21st_Centurycurid=884diff=4584oldid=4575

Note that November has been changed to Povember in all cases, including
*other* templates.

It isn't always a P either, see this diff:

http://rwbookclub.com/w/index.php?title=Among_Otherscurid=898diff=4594oldid=4592

November became Aovember.

To clarify: at the moment no wikitext or html markup, or any other kind of
markup, is supported for labels, descriptions, or anywhere else in a data item.
This is by design, and it's unlikely that we'll implement support for wiki
markup in general.

If you feel that there are important reasons to allow links (or italics, or
whatever), I suggest to make a page somewhere and collect the use cases, so we
can discuss what to do about them.

[Bug 32956] Form inputs should use HTML label tag for inputs that have labels

2012-11-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32956

--- Comment #2 from Yaron Koren yaro...@gmail.com 2012-11-04 15:04:49 UTC ---
It would be great to use label - the problem is that that sort of direct
substitution can't work with all template layouts, like the default table one,
since that layout puts the label and the input into two separate table cells. I
think the only way this can really be supported is if/when forms can be
generated on the fly from just a Page Schemas XML schema. (That, on its own,
would also make forms easier to create and maintain, by the way.)

[Bug 41767] New: Multiple blank lines in Wiki markup should be treated as a single blank line

2012-11-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41767

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 41767
Summary: Multiple blank lines in Wiki markup should be treated
as a single blank line
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Parser
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: eduard.bra...@gmx.de
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

When typing multiple blank lines in source the parser should treat them like a
single blank line, e.g. starting a new paragraph, like in other popular markup
languages like LaTeX.

The current behavior is that the first blank line starts a new paragraph, the
second blank line adds a br HTML tag, the third blank line starts a new
paragraph again and so on.

This is counterintuitive since it leads to nonuniform vertical spacing (about
half a line for new paragraphs produced by odd-numbered blank lines, a full
line for the br tags produced by even-numbered blank lines), therefore
rendering this method useless to produce defined amounts of vertical spacing.
Needless to say its typographical nonsense to produce vertical space by
repeated linebreaks anyway and its bad style to do it in HTML, too.

For possible effects of such a fudamental change to the MediaWiki parser see
the discussion here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29#Handling_of_blank_lines_in_Wikipedia_syntax
Basically the only case where two blank lines are actually used to achieve a
larger vertical spacing is before {{stub}} templates. These templates could be
easily adjusted to adopt to a potential change to the parser.

Is it worth considering Messages instead of talk if we're dropping My? I
realise Messages has become associated with LQT, but really a user talkpage
is just a collection of messages to the user, and every newbie I've talked to
thinks of them that way.

Just my 2c.

Hi guys, and sorry if this has been mentioned before (I did a search but
couldn't find anything relevant). I just saw the ULS live on Wikidata, and of
course I love it. However, there is one small annoyance: when you click outside
the area of the popup, the popup should close. This behaviour is pretty much a
standard on the web by now with these in-page popups (e.g. Facebook pictures),
and it is what I expect when clicking outside of its area.

Otherwise, great job guys! Bravo. :-)

If some options are hidden (
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgHiddenPrefs ), they should probably do
not apply at all instead of still being applied to users that changed them.

They don't. See includes/User.php, every pref that is hidden is automatically
reset to the default when accessed in both getOption() and getOptions().

(In reply to comment #3)
Is your browser pre-filling it from previously submitted form?

This is probably what's going on here. Or else they have a user script
installed that remembers the setting of the checkbox and changes it.

Precisely *because* it's such a good name. We've been discussing LQT for
literally ages, and even if we think Flow's going to deployed at some point in
the future, then it's going to be a replacement for talk pages, not going to a
confusing dual-system (at least I hope not). In the meantime, why should we be
put of using messages? I don't buy it.

Are, so Flow and user talk are going to run in parallel? How will that work? I
can see that Flow notifications + user talk pages works as an intermediary, but
are we really going to have two user messaging systems running in parallel?

[Bug 41672] Drop possessive in personal tools

2012-11-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41672

--- Comment #24 from Jarry1250 jarry1...@gmail.com 2012-11-04 17:17:33 UTC ---
Having it as (talk) rather than Messages avoids one kind of confusion
(down the line, one might have two messaging systems run in parallel) at the
expense of the other (users being completely confused at to where they pick up
the messages people have sent to them.

To expand somewhat, talk is an active verb, and (talk) is clearly used
throughout the interface as a way of saying click here to send a message to
Y. I don't think it's obvious at all to newer users that you would click on
that to read messages sent to that user (i.e. me). Even My talk was less
cryptic in that respect, because implied that the target was a thing that you
had control over.

Imagine sitting down with a new user. You ask them to find the note about
copyright issues you sent them last Thursday. Would they be more likely to
click My talk, (talk) or Messages?

It is not at all working on text input boxes of hotcat and reftoolbar. You may
choose a better subjectline if it is confusing.

I choosed the word crash because it was working well earlier.

Tested on ml.wikipedia, other Narayam enabled projects. It doesn't crash, it
doesn't seem to work at all. Control-M closes the HotCat text field as opposed
to enabling / disabling Narayam when trying to add a new category using HotCat

Unfortunately, there are many, many instances where users are instructed leave
a message on my talk page or you've got a new message on your talk page.
This was one of the reasons for the switch from Discussion back to Talk.

Until there's a new framework, we should leave it as is.

This bug is not the best place to discuss Flow or its plans; this bug is for
discussing possessives in labels.

Fair enough, we can leave the discussion for another time. But in any case, I
would contend that My talk is substantially clearer than (talk) or simply

This change has been done in the Polish translation of MW a long time ago (in
fact, I don't remember the possessive ever being there), with the exception of
my talk and my contributions, for which the possessive was kept.

frame:expandTemplate does not work on parser functions. I didn't test #style
but at the very least fullurl doesn't work with it.

This would be problematic for the same reason it's problematic for templates.

[Bug 41770] New: Highlighting syntax within editing window by default

2012-11-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41770

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 41770
Summary: Highlighting syntax within editing window by default
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Page editing
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ijethro...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Having read https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16268 and
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11627, this enhancement
proposal is sufficiently different and is based on different discussion.

There is a wide consensus of editors who would like to see syntax highlighting
in the standard editing window turned on by default, particularly for
references, for wiki markup. This consensus has been reached in two
discussions on en.wiki, one at the Village Pump
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28proposals%29/Archive_92#Differentiating_reference_syntax_in_the_editing_window.
and one in a Request For Comments that was a part of Centralized Discussion for
30 days:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Syntax_differentiation_in_editing_window.
Given the course of the discussion, and the overwhelming support for this
functionality, I decided to submit this proposal to bugzilla.

Many participants in the above discussions expressed that adding a syntax
highlighter would make editing a more accessible experience for newer users.
In fact, direct feedback from new editors has suggested that this has been a
problem (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:FeedbackDashboard/46104).
They are also unsatisfied with

Previous proposals have stated that implementing this internally is not
possible. However, this is incorrect; there are at least some examples of
non-external editors that work or could work reasonably well:
- jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/ (with implementation:
http://doc.jsfiddle.net/)
- AceWikiEditor: http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hjelp:AceWikiEditor
- en.wikipedia user RememberTheDot's syntax highlighter:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Remember_the_dot/Syntax_highlighter
(which I use).

The only thing I would have liked to see more of in the above discussions were
persons who might be able to discuss a specific implementation. Some
discussion of that is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Syntax_differentiation_in_editing_window#Implementation.
Such discussion would be helpful here, given the above information on how it
may be viable to implement this internally.

MediaWiki already has JavaScript table sorting.

Ah. I had been under the misapprehension it was something template-based. Okay.

The issue is that paginated results will make the sorting useless, isn't it?

Well, in many cases it's possible to see all the results of the query by
bumping up the limit parameter, at which point sorting becomes valuable.

It should be made clear that sorting applies only to the visible results.

The following 50 pages link to Example.
Sorted in alphabetical order. [change sort direction]
(previous 50 | next 50) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500)

No, that didn't fix the bug, I can still reproduce now with 1.19.

http://www.mwusers.com/forums/showthread.php?18000-Error-sending-confirmation-Email
states there was a fix in 1.18.1.
However the error message is so generic that I can imagine many reasons why
this fails (and that the two affected users who commented here might have
different problems with the same outcome).

For the records, a similar report without a solution is
