[Bug 42059] New: Kill section auto-numbering

2012-11-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42059

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 42059
   Summary: Kill section auto-numbering
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: rkald...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Section auto-numbering
(https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Table_of_contents#Auto-numbering) is,
IMO, one of the worst ideas in MediaWiki that has survived to the present day.
It makes every article look like a legal treatise instead of something designed
to be read by a normal human being.

Strangely, you can actually add auto-numbering to the headers themselves (an
even worse idea), but you can't remove it entirely.

It's time for us to adopt a kinder, gentler table of contents and get rid of
all the '3.2.5.1's and '2.3.2.2's. I'm sure many years ago (when most articles
were stubs or only had one level of headers) it seemed harmless enough, but
these days some ToCs have more numbers than words.

I see that WikiVoyage has wisely decided to eschew the numbering. We should
learn from our new comrades and adopt this strange but elegant Western fashion
as our own.

My proposal would be to turn off all auto-numbering by default, but allow any
hard-line loyalists to re-enable it in the preferences. The option to turn on
header auto-numbering, however, should be sent to the firing squad.

If this is deemed too radical by others in the politburo, perhaps we could at
least introduce an option to turn off auto-numbering in the preferences for
those wishing to escape the tyranny of numbers.

It seems to be forgotten in this discussion that ULS will also set the default
language for anon users based on the accept-language header even before they
select any language explicitly. That feature would not work with the solution
described in comment #47.

[Bug 41451] ULS causes pages to be cached with random user language

--- Comment #49 from Erik Moeller e...@wikimedia.org 2012-11-13 09:50:13 UTC

Niklas, that feature could be disabled for now. If I'm understanding things
correctly, implementing that feature reasonably well would require selection of
cached language copies of a page based on the contents of the ULS cookie, and
scalable implementation of purging across all cached copies.

Is the description in comment 47 correct/workable? Is it preferable to a
URL-based approach?

If the answers are yes and yes, I suggest we iterate, and once we've got that
solution implemented and deployed on small wikis that use ULS, focus on what
the desired behavior will be in the glorious Varnish future.

 If I'm understanding things
correctly, implementing that feature reasonably well would require selection
 of
cached language copies of a page based on the contents of the ULS cookie

To clarify, the Accept-Language feature would require selecting the correct
variant from the cache based on Accept-Language, _and_ overriding that choice
with the variant specified by the ULS cookie if set. Again, please limit the
feature set to something that's feasible now and iterate from there.

[Bug 41489] ULS: JSON loading problems (Access-Control-Allow-Origin)

--- Comment #11 from Niklas Laxström niklas.laxst...@gmail.com 2012-11-13

(In reply to comment #8)
ULS shouldn't be using CORS to load JSON data from static files. It should use
 JSON-P, preferably from the API.

As far as I know it is jquery.i18n which is loading the files. We are not going
to change the i18n file format for this, so the ULS extension would need to
implement custom loading wrapper for both backend and frontend.

Or perhaps we could just skip the effort and load the static files from the
current domain ignoring bits altogether?

The numbered headings slightly increase scannability of wrapped headlines.

Compare:

1 This is the long long Heading of
Doom that continues
2 This is another heading
3 This is another heading

with

This is the long long Heading of
Doom that continues
This is another heading
This is another heading

I tried browsing en.wp for a while with tocnumbering off but found that loss of
scannability too annoying. YMMV and I have no strong view on what the default
should be. However, it might be nice to adjust the layout to address this
scannability issue.

An alternative to disabling numbering altogether would be to disable it at a
high nesting depth. If lots of folks like having the numbers, that might be a
good compromise that doesn't require the addition of Yet Another Preference.

[Bug 42063] New: Provide a linked data endpoint for accessing entities

 Bug #: 42063
Summary: Provide a linked data endpoint for accessing entities
   Product: MediaWiki extensions

  Platform: All

Status: NEW

In the spirit of the linked data web, entity URIs should resolve to a machine
readable representation of the respective entity. While the API and
Special:Export already provide access to this data, their output contains
wrapper structures and meta-information that does not belong to the entity
denoted by the URI.

To provide a machine readable representation of the entity, a special page
should be created that generates the canonical JSON representation for a given
entity. URL rewriting can then be used to make this special page accessible via
a canonical URI/URL schema, as described by
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Notes/URI_scheme#Machine-readable_access.
The representation returned by the data endpoint should be consistent with the
representation used in the web API (no necessarily with the internal
representation, which is exposed by Special:Export and does not even need to be
JSON).

Care should be taken to allow caching of this data on the HTTP level, making
use of the appropriate Cache-Control, ETag and If-Modified-Since headers.

The AbuseFilter extensions tries to detect vandalism using, among other things,
pattern matching against page content. This is currently targeted at wikitext
and does not work well, if at all, for non-text content like Wikidata items.

AbuseFilter needs to be adapted or extended to handle structured content
smartly. It could define hooks which the Wikibase extension could then use to
implement the desired behavior.

No, that is not the case. The number comes from counting the users on

Anyway, this bug just got worse. Now Special:Statistics shows that the active
users are -1. Added a screenshot and upped the importance to normal.

[Bug 42065] New: Filter redundant jobs from the queue

2012-11-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42065

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 42065
Summary: Filter redundant jobs from the queue
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.21-git
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: JobQueue
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: daniel.kinz...@wikimedia.de
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Under some circumstances, like multiple successive edits to a much used
template, the job queue may get quite full, and many of the jobs will be
redundant: After a template is edited three times during a short period of
time, the affected pages have all to be re-rendered, but only once, not three
times.

For jobs that re-render page content, this can be done using the page_touched
field. When the job is created and scheduled, it should remember the current
value of page_touched. When the job is later executed, it can then first check
whether page_touched is still the same as it was when the job was created. if
not, the job can be canceled and the page is not rendered again.

Consider this scenario:

1: Template T gets edited, page P needs to be updated.
2: Job J1 is scheduled for updating the page
3: J1.page_touched is set to the page's current touch timestamp,
P.page_touched.
4: Template T gets edited again before J1 was executed, page P (still) needs to
be updated.
5: Job J2 is scheduled for updating the page
6: J2.page_touched is set to the page's current touch timestamp,
P.page_touched. This is still the same as J1.page_touched, since we assumed the
page wasn't re-rendered in the mean time.
7: J1 gets executed.
8: J1 checks J1.page_updated against P.page_updated and find it's still the
same.
9: J1 re-renders P. This sets P.page_touched to the current wall clock time.
10: J2 gets executed.
11: J2 checks J2.page_updated against P.page_updated and find it's not the
same.
12: J2 aborts.

This also covers the case that P gets re-rendered for some other reason:

4: P gets edited and re-rendered. This sets P.page_touched to the current wall
clock time.
5,6: nothing
7: J1 gets executed.
8: J1 checks J1.page_updated against P.page_updated and find it's not the same.
9: J1 aborts.

--- Comment #9 from Yaron Koren yaro...@gmail.com 2012-11-13 13:43:49 UTC ---
I may have some insight into this: yesterday I was trying out my Data Transfer
extension, which uses jobs, on my wiki with MW 1.21alpha, and discovered (like
Raimond) that it wasn't adding anything to the job table. I looked into it,
and found that the issue was the call to $dbw-onTransactionIdle() in the
method JobQueueDB::doBatchPush(). Everything inside that set of code was never
called. When I commented out the onTransactionIdle() line (and its closing tag
about 30 lines down), everything worked perfectly again.

By the way, I have PHP 5.3.10 and MySQL 5.5.22 on that server.

So shouldn't this be filed under the AbuseFilter component then?

Well, technically, a request to add the hook point we need would go into the
AbuseFilter component, while the ticket for implementing the desired behavior
would stay here. But I think we can omit the former.

 http://wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Hlutur_eftir_nafn (this is Icelandic alias
 for
 Special:ItemByTitle) Even with uselang=is, it's not recognized.

That´s correct. However, I have changed the icelandic alias for that on
wikidata.org at Wikidata:Aliases for special pages. There are three aliases for
Special:ItemByTitle, per Jeblad´s suggestion and the icelandic ones are:
Special:HluturEftirTitli, Special:HluturEftirTungumálatengli and
Special:HluturEftirVefsvæðistengli.
I am not sure when Jeblad is going to push that change to gerrit. You will
probably need to ask himself.

there can be a bot to move patch-released to resolved-fixed after some time?

Also see
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2012-November/064317.html

after the patch is live bug can move to resolved fixed

That's very Wikimedia specific while commits go also into MediaWiki.

To me, RESOLVED FIXED == patch has been merged, not necessarily deployed on a

-make the wikibugs bot join #wikimedia-wikivoyage
-let it report changes only on the wikivoyage related bugs

Playing the devil's advocate: Who exactly wants this?

As a separate wikivoyage product/component currently doesn't make sense IMO
(it's WM/Site configuration), the only possible way is to use a wikivoyage
keyword and parse the X-Bugzilla-Keywords mail header (as neither
dependency/blocks field values nor CC field values are bugmail headers).
That's exactly the same problem as discussed in bug 38994 though.

[Bug 35038] Make MathJax menus translatable [upstream]

2012-11-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35038

--- Comment #22 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2012-11-13
14:47:05 UTC ---
So, here's the update:

Apparently, it's already possible to use menu-i18n.js as it is to localize the
menu. We translated the menu to a few languages and it works. To achieve this
we just need to change our code, but we would be happy to send you the
translations that we made to a few languages already. I'm just unsure to which
folder in GitHub to add them.

However, translating the menu alone is not enough. Messages like Typesetting
math: 45% cannot be properly localized with the current code for at least two
reasons:

1. Most importantly, they are concatenated on the fly. This will not work in
languages with a different word order.

2. The digits in the percentage are not localized. This is relevant for Arabic,
Persian, Marathi and some other languages.

Our jquery.i18n library has a ready-made solution for both problems - it has a
flexible parameter system that allows any word order and it has automatic digit
localization. So to have complete localization you should either use
jquery.i18n or come up with your own parameter functions.

Will be on labs as soon as it's merged.

How about making the talk-page link the same as this one (instead of view
reader feedback, also make it 4 suggestions), for consistency?

Also, I was wondering why the link should only be shown to editors; wouldn't it
be beneficial if readers are intrigued and end up marking feedback as
helpful/unhelpful? (we could even put up a notice that they get more powerful
feedback moderation tools after registering an account)

menu-i18n is an experimental extension made by Thomas Leathrum when we started
to talk about localization. It was useful to give a prototype to base the
discussion on. However, this extension has limits and we found many issues to
address including your point 1). I don't think we thought about 2), although we
also mentioned use of commas/dots in numbers. I'm sure Wikipedia folks has a
good experience with localization and we certainly want to take benefits from
your efforts and make the interface as convenient as possible for localization
folks.

As Peter said, we are going to have a developer meeting today to plan MathJax's
future developments now that MathJax 2.1 is released. Localization will be one
of the topic. Personally, I would be in favor of using your extension or at
least relying on it as much as possible. There is one thing that I would like
to ask. Your extension is called jquery.i18n so I guess it requires jquery at
the moment. Does that mean that MathJax has to include jquery or call a jquery
installation on another server? Perhaps it does not rely so heavily on jquery
and we could replace the use of jquery by MathJax's own API?

Thanks.

A bugzilla account for awb developers would be good. We could forward the

No subcomponents should be needed for starts.

We have 50 exceptions reported and 2-3 more bugs that are MW related.

All other reports can be solved in the old wikipedia page.

I'd rally prefer to see some agreement and commitment among AWB developers
(also on the bug report workflow) before setting up something that in the worst
case only one or two persons might take a look at from time to time.

(In reply to comment #13)
A bugzilla account for awb developers would be good. We could forward the
notifications to the current awb devs.

Not sure if I understand completely.
Does this depend on creating an AWB product in Bugzilla first?
With notifications you refer to bugmail, but who would receive this? An email
address to an existing AWB mailing list? Asking as one Bugzilla account is
always linked to one email address.

[Bug 40496] Other actions beside login should be throttled based on failed captcha attempts

2012-11-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #3 from Chris Steipp cste...@wikimedia.org 2012-11-13 16:20:39

I agree, this would be a very useful feature, although implementing it needs to
be handled carefully.

For passwords, you typically either present a captcha, or you introduce an
exponentially-increasing delay.

To get a handle on the effect, it would be nice to start logging captcha
presentations, in addition to the pass/fail logging that we do. That will let
us calculate the pass or fail rate of a single IP or User.

I suspect that if we throttle based on the pass rate, instead of a static
number of requests, that would more accurately block someone brute forcing,
while not disrupting edits for users who happen to be behind a proxy with a
large number of legitimate users.

[Bug 42068] New: Internal error on Special:Preferences on Wikimedia Incubator

   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal

Hello,
Whenever I go to [[incubator:Special:Preferences]], I get an internal error
similar to the following:

[31b42f98] 2012-11-13 16:12:12: Fatal exception of type MWException

I don't know if I changed my preferences there recently, but I'm unable to
change preferences now, or even see what they're set to. Special:Preferences
seems fine on other WMF wikis (works on metawiki and enwiki).

I believe this could somehow related to the language setting or the
(WikimediaIncubator-extension specific) test wiki preference.

My settings for this are de/incubator and I am able to access
Special:Preferences.
However, trying with another account whose preferences were never edited
(therefore the settings are en/none), it fails.

I've also asked a non-sysop with the settings en/incubator if he can access it,
to confirm that this is not because of my sysop status.

For a reason unknown to me, I'm getting French as the language for the central
notice on enwiki and mediawiki.org. I probably had French as my language at one
point or another, so this isn't *totally* off base, but my language preference
on mediawiki.org is currently English, so I'm not sure why it's giving me
French.

Clearly this is bad--talking to someone in anything but their native language
can't be a good idea. I'd love to help bug-hunt if needed.

[Bug 42070] New: Improve the search capabilities when searching for media

 Component: History/Diffs
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: robert.ribn...@gmail.com

I recently searched for media (images) about master race on commons. Master
race is a concept going back to the 19th century, that one race is superior
to the others. Instead of what I wanted, I was given various images of races,
so race-cars, drivers of race cars, bikes, ...

I therefore propose the following search algorithm:
-First search for the phrase as it was entered
-Then search for modifications of the phrase (eg. all lowercase, ...)
-Then seearch for different parts of the phrase.

For each hit you get, you should keep track of which of the three cases it
originated from.

The UI can then be modified, to let the user toggle the different kind of
hits he gets. In addition, very basic stats could be displayed (as in: 15 hits
for case 1, 22 hits for case 2, and 200 hits for case 3).

Corollary: CiviCRM doesn't have any way to switch languages, so once this
happens, I'm stuck with French. Since I know enough French to fumble my way
through an interface that I wrote, but not nearly enough to understand
instructions for credit card transactions, this means that I'm unable to
donate. So we should maybe have the Universal Language Selector (or something)
running on our CiviCRM instance, too.

   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW

AssignedTo: d...@ucsc.edu
ReportedBy: bjor...@wikimedia.org
CC: jger...@wikimedia.org, wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

On enwiki, the page [[en:Portal:Featured sounds]] embeds 380 media files.
Something within TimedMediaHandler causes my browser on my laptop (Firefox
16.0.2, Linux) to grind (100% CPU, unresponsive) for about 10 minutes at around
the time the DOMReady or onLoad event fires, apparently while generating the UI
for all those embeds. Others on IRC reported similar experiences or outright
crashes in Firefox and Chrome. In further testing, a page with 90 embeds seemed
to be handled fine for me, and a page with 180 ground for about 15 seconds.

If this can't be fixed directly, perhaps TMH can process the embeds on the page
in batches (waiting for one batch to complete before the next runs) or just
refuse to process over a certain number of embeds in a page.

[Bug 39473] Running parser test files with phpunit.php should behave like running them with parserTests.php

2012-11-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39473

--- Comment #5 from Daniel Werner daniel.wer...@wikimedia.de 2012-11-13

Actually, from the current state I would rather prefer to drop phpunit.php
being smart and executing parser tests. It seems that this has a somewhat
poorer implementation compared with the parserTests.php, parserTests.php seems
more flexible to me.
On the other hand, it's nice having them executed automatically with unit
tests.

If anyone wants to keep parserTests.php for some reason, we should try to make
a common base. And when we have that, we should try to make it more flexible
again, stuff like not being able to create upper case articles within those
tests and articles being created in the beginning and not in a sequential order
really sucks.
