The Multimedia team has come up with this framework, wrapped in an extension,
for experimental features. It's part of our rollout plan to get it on test2 and
mediawiki.org, so we can also start deploying extensions that use its
framework.

VisualEditor, Multimedia, Mobile, and E2 are all planning on using this
framework in the coming quarter to gate features they aren't ready to release
on an opt-out basis.

Please review for security and performance (in particular the update jobs for
user counts may be tricky for the latter) and add it to the extensions enabled
on mediawiki.org and test2.

Thanks!

A file containing an ampersand (&) in the file name was deleted. The ImagePage
that is shown in the historical file location displays the log message that
documents the deletion. Within this log message entry links are provided to
[[Special:GlobalUsage]] and toolserver.org/~delinker. Neither of these links
properly encodes the ampersand for use in a URL. The ampersand appears as a
litter element of the link href instead of being encoded as a '%26' entity.

[Bug 43046] 504 Gateway timeout when editing through API

2013-09-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43046

More data gathered from IRC with the help of MaxSem:
- editing *works* from API for
ro:Lista_monumentelor_istorice_din_județul_Caraș-Severin ‎(213K currently)
- editing *doesn't work *from API for
ro:Lista_monumentelor_istorice_din_București,_sector_1 (184K currently)
- editing works from browser for both pages

The error is "Maximum execution time of 180 seconds exceeded" and happens after
the page is saved, apparently during parsing of the page.

I still believe that editing should work just as well from API and from
browser.

[Bug 53862] New: Removing portal-url, currentevents-url and helppage from default Sidebar

portal-url ("Community portal"), currentevents-url ("Current events") and
helppage ("Help") lead to empty pages in a fresh MediaWiki install, when most
projects won't need these pages ever.

Let's save some work to new MediaWiki sysadmins by removing those links.

This is by on my own experience as MediaWiki hobbyist sysadmin. But also:

I went to http://wikiapiary.com/wiki/Youngest_websites and I took a couple of
samples of about 10 sites in languages that i could understand:

* Most recent
* 1 year old or more

Among the most recent (up to 2 months old) most still had those 3 links,
leading to empty pages. The rest had removed 1, 2 or the 3 of them.

Among the 1 year old sample most had modified the Sidebar removing 2-3 of those
links and offering sensible, non-empty pages for all options.

Most people setting up a MediaWiki has seen Wikipedia and is probably
considering whether to have or not an own community portal or help. I don't
think we need to force new MediaWiki sysadmins to have them or learn to remove
them from the sidebar - seeing that what happens most of the times is that
those pages are in the meantime left empty (bad user experience).

Thanks - I will test all new software!

I remember when we did the same on the TS (debian/ubuntu) we had some similar
issues, please confer [1] and [2] (search for "cv"). As you can see there a
(unofficial) backport of cv2 was installed - I think DaB did this...

[Bug 48958] Images: Inline image is missing alt attribute; parse caption separately all the way to DOM and use DOMFragment encapsulation

2013-09-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48958

Some notes re accessibility from a recent meeting with Gerardo Capiel:

* Long-term we should try to store the alt text or long description along with
the image itself, and use that to populate the alt attribute if none was
provided explicitly. This requires significant work in core to store metadata
along with image pages.

* For screenreaders it would be good to also provide a longdesc attribute
linking to the textual description on the image page.

[Bug 24739] Ability to dynamically change base font-size of Mediawiki

--- Comment #6 from Jared Zimmerman (WMF) ---
I think this is a great start to an idea. However I hate to spend design and
development cycles redesigning browser functionality.

1. My recommendation would be to have the default site skin react properly
during browser font zoom

2. Create a Beta Feature https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Beta_Features that
allows someone to switch to an accessiblity mode where we have significanlty
larger fonts by default

3. Have the site be responsive to window size when it comes to line length,
leading, padding & whitespace, (but not font size )which will all aid in
readability.

So what happened here was the change was merged without a merge commit. Will
require some manual wrangling one way or the other to fix.

[Bug 53834] Pronoun selection has gender bias

2013-09-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53834

--- Comment #7 from Jared Zimmerman (WMF) ---
(In reply to comment #6)
MZMcBride, there are three issues.

1. The 3rd option is a non-answer, and implies that people who do not fit into
binary genders "decline to say" rather than choosing a 3rd valid option. For
people who would intentionally choose a non-gender binary option they are NOT
answering "unknown."
2. By having the masculine pronoun first there is the less than subtle
implication that it is the default.
3. The options obfuscate what happens in the system when the current 3rd option
is chosen, it implies that the user is "opting-out" of the system, when in fact
they are choosing a gender neutral means of the system addressing them.

This bug seeks primarily to rectify issue 3, but also change the tone of the
explanation text for why we ask in the first place. The current one is somewhat
devoid of any personality and is rather cold and technical.

As far as this being english only. While I'm logging this bug in english and it
refers to the current english language copy on the site, it was meant to spark
the conversation for this setting in all languages. I think this is a workable
improvement to what we have in english and I'd challenge speakers of other
languages to attempt to make improvements in their own language to be more
inclusive and open to project contributors of any gender.

I think it would be fine not to include the pronouns after the examples.

Why would "decline to say" be something bad?

Not necessarily, and actually mostly not. It just means that they don't care
about whatever is currently the default language. The default is hopefully
gender neutral enough but may be not; or it may just not matter at all in the
language of the user.

Grammatical gender is something rather cold and technical. If you proposal
seeks to add more emotions to this heated-enough topic which should focus on
grammatical issues, then it's surely a bad idea.

Both are true, but only in part; see above.

The message documentation already encourages translators to do so.

This actually looks more like generic content styles to me.

To keep the overhead in the head element low, we should probably link one CSS
file only, and compile that from default MW styles and our custom ones in our

[Bug 51698] Parsoid: Output MathJax rendering for Math tags instead of images

2013-09-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51698

Arg -- I had responded twice, twice it was lost... Trying again.

===

On Sept 4 (after the IRC chat log) I tried to post:

Obviously, I'd love to see MathML + MathJax on Wikipedia. That would be a huge
step forward for math on the web, accessibility, and education.

But on the wikitech-I thread I started a while ago, there was a bit of
uneasiness when it comes to MathJax performance, especially on mobile. I got
the feeling that fallback images will be required for a while. Perhaps SVG
might be better though and MathJax could help there, too.

MathJax is modular on input, internal and output which is sometimes confusing
in discussions; so yes we have an HTML/CSS output and an SVG output. At the
same time, the texlive+texvc backend is a bit horrible. Personally, I think
LateXML is a great tool for converting full LaTeX documents but I worry that
you'll need another texvc to limit it -- it's too powerful. MathJax might just
fit better because of its restricted syntax (and is extensible through
javascript). Obviously, I'm terribly biased. For the record, LaTeXML is miles
better than texvc. I'm meeting Martin Schubotz (the author of the arXiv link)
over the next few days, so I hope to learn more about his projects (and he's
coming up to WMF after that I hear so that's awesome).

Copy&paste is tricky. Yes, it works in FF, but often OS clipboards do not know
how to handle it, apps sanitize it away etc. MathJax offers a context menu to
access TeX & MathML source (and in our upcoming release any annotation-xml);
cumbersome but it works everywhere. We are considering web components / shadow
dom, but given the state of support that's for the future (current
implementations have some funky copy&paste behavior).

I did get the strong impression on wikitech-I that wiktext should keep TeX as
its internal format, so I'm wondering what you have in mind for pasting MathML.
MathML isn't semantically rich enough to produce human readable TeX.

Regarding Content MathML, that's a topic of debate. I'm not an expert on
Content MathML but I've heard relatively negative things about it from a
semantic point of view. A case in point is that accessibility tools don't do
better on Content MathML than on Presentation MathML -- they build their own
semantic structures on top of it anyway. In any case, you don't see a lot
ContentMathML in the wild since no one can render it.

From a search point of view there doesn't seem to be much difference (but of
course a specific search technology might prefer Content, Presentation, or
TeX).

It's more important to produce high quality Presentation MathML instead of low
quality Content MathML. MathML today is a bit like HTML 1 -- we have the
language, some basic rendering, that's it. MathML has missed out on 20 years of
web development (although it's the de-facto standard in publishing and
technical writing workflows). MathML on Wikipedia would be important to push
things forward but small steps in what's currently possible would be better.

Yesterday I tried to post:

cc'ing Fred and Moritz who have been actively working on the math extension
recently.

@Gabriel I'm a bit confused by your last two messages. [[well, less so after
seeing that mine didn't get through]]

Are you just collecting thoughts on this? Are you thinking about long term or
short term? Is the topic now the back end or is it still the front end (as the
issue title suggests)?

Anyway, here a few more thoughts, trying to provide some outside input.

* Content MathML won't help on the front end -- you need Presentation MathML on
the front end and use polyfills where necessary. MathJax works on all current
browsers and while older machines and older Android devices may still see
performance issues, those will continue to improve. Replacing images (PNG or
SVG) on the fly is a progressive enhancement on all systems.
* the prototype that Gerardo mentioned combines MathJax and ChromeVox, so
you'll run into the same problem for MathML support.
* generating static speech strings is the lowest form of a11y, especially when
you could use MathJax which math accessibility tools support.
* generating static images of any kind will remove all the advantages of
reflowable and accessible content.
* the math extension does not yet use LaTeXML but Fred and Martin are working
on that.

I can't help but point out that there are also a number of serious issues with
WIkipedia's math that are more important than ContentMathML. For example,
there's no display math mode which is an incredible shortcoming. There's also
poor unicode support and poor RTL support. None of this will improve by
switching to Content MathML -- garbage in, garbage out would be the result.

This breakage seems to be a side-effect of the gerrit migration. For me,

$ git clone https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/p/mediawiki/extensions/VisualEditor
$ cd VisualEditor ; git log --oneline -1

Note that

As far as I can tell, the version of opencv supported by Ubuntu precise is
2.3.1, with seems to provide only the 'cv' python module (though it binds with

I'll install this now; if you are missing further requirements, I'll look into

Add the opportunity to have different markers for different query results.

Idea:
{{#ask: [[Category:XYZ]]
| ?Has coordinates
| format=map
| ?has icon
}}

So if I had stored a HAS ICON property on my page (has
icon=Corporate-sign-40px.jpg), different markers would be shown on the map for
every result.

It would help to get a fast overview.

Not entirely sure why I was CCed on this, but...

Regarding the FORCE INDEX (user_timestamp) in comment 0, that appears to be
coming from includes/specials/SpecialContributions.php,
ContribsPager::getUserCond() and ContribsPager::getQueryInfo(). git archeology
finds that this force index was added way back in 2005, r9796.

Regarding the FORCE INDEX (change_tag_tag_id) in comment 3, that's coming from
ChangeTags::modifyDisplayQuery(), added in r49068 with a comment "fix tag
filtering by adding a FORCE INDEX to the relevant queries". There's also
forcing of that index in API modules that do the same sort of thing added in
r58399, which refers to bug 22032, which makes it sound like r49068 was fixing
some issue where a bad query was bringing down the site. Since I have no idea
of the background on that and the problematic queries don't seem to be
mentioned in the change summaries, I'm CCing some of the people involved in
those revisions.

Seeing the two numbers in the bug summary of bug 53840 autolinked (Allowed

I wonder to generally doubt how useful $replacerGitCommit actually is with its
current configuration of lengths between 8 and 40 characters ({8,40}) as it
links against Gerrit's query functionality (hence searching for a 5 digit
changeset would also be a potential target here, but that would like collide
with bug numbers so whoever set that up likely started with 8 chars because of
that).

[Bug 53856] New: VisualEditor: weird behavior with double square brackets

2013-09-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53856

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 53856
Summary: VisualEditor: weird behavior with double square
brackets
   Product: VisualEditor
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General
  Assignee: jforres...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: elitr...@gmail.com
CC: jforres...@wikimedia.org, krinklem...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Try to start a line with a wikilinked word as you might do in the source
editor.

1) Typing the opening double square brackets will not trigger the no-markup
warning.
2) The opening brackets will immediately disappear, the closing ones will stay.
3) When you reach the second closing bracket, VE will also add another one on
the following line. (If instead of moving to step 4 you use the keyboard arrows
around the word, you will not be able anymore to type something outside the
brackets, and will need your mouse to place yourself outside of them).
4) Keep typing something instead, then press Enter: whatever you added is
automatically copied to the next line, while the "third" square bracket is
furtherly moved onto the next line.
5) Now add the brackets to an already existing word, correctly triggering the
warning. Save anyway.
6) Review the changes. The brackets that triggered the warning did not trigger
the nowiki tags as well. An opening one and a closing one are gone, and what is
left is weird anyway. (This can also be triggered before saving by hitting Back
Space, but I can't say where).
The brackets that we added in the first place are all gone, the duplicated text
is gone as well, just a lonely closing bracket stands still.

To do this, they've made a few patches to core in different places. I think
these patches can be eliminated by calling a hook in Linker::linkText().

Could you separate your steps (and sentences) by using punctuation marks?
Have you asked on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Support_desk ?
Still no idea what your error message is, still no idea why you think this is
related to this bug report. Again, see
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug
