This bug is partly wontfix since this is linked to an upstream Mailman for a proper resolution, but could be partly mitigated by changing some configuration parameters, although there is no proper solution. I open this bug partly to isolate this mailing lists issue from other DMARC-related bugs (56414, 59731, 64795), and properly tracking the issue. Two mitigations: 1/ http://www.spamresource.com/2014/04/run-email-discussion-list-heres-how-to.html is a way to mitigate the issue, although the main point is to change the From: header to a fixed address like wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org (quite disruptive for all users). 2/ http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf/current/msg87176.html proposes to rewrite Yahoo (+AOL) sending addresses from some...@yahoo.com to some...@yahoo.com.invalid to bypass DMARC. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. It started for me on Friday May 2nd. I was on an old svn version. Changed to compat, same behaviour. Every single edit appeared as done from my IP. On core, I get a first run OK; but when I call the bot from a different script, it keeps asking for reauthentication. As a resume of the proposed solution above, there are three solutions (at least): (1) a quick one: set Wikimedia’s $wgUserEmailUseReplyTo to true. This would apply for all users, kind of functionality loss for me since the user no longer see who is the sender. (2) a more robust one: patch MediaWiki to decide on a domain-by-domain basis if $wgUserEmailUseReplyTo should be used. Yahoo and AOL would fall into the first case, others not. This would add inconsistency from an user to another, and hence a bit more difficult to document and explain to users. Steps to reproduce == 1. Set wiki to have read access only for users: $wgGroupPermissions['*']['read'] = false; $wgGroupPermissions['user']['read'] = true; Note that if testing on local environment, you will have to first open VE with the 'Edit' button, so that Parsoid is not locked out by this configuration. 2. Open the 'Media' button in the VE toolbar and search for something. 3. The AJAX request will return 'readapidenied', because it won't recognise the user credentials. Cause = ve.ui.MWMediaSearchWidget.js makes a JSONP request to the localhost. However, MediaWiki's ApiMain.php:180 (https://git.wikimedia.org/blob/mediawiki%2Fcore.git/9db61c9ab58b11b639a1f95916b37b57530ec674/includes%2Fapi%2FApiMain.php#L180) will remove user credentials from JSONP requests for security reasons. Therefore, the user is treated as not being logged in and the 'readapidenied' message is returned. Solution There is already a TODO here from Trevor Parschal bf268e82: // TODO: Only use JSON-P for cross-domain. // jQuery has this logic built-in (if url is not same-origin ..) // but isn't working for some reason. However, I can't see anything in the jQuery $.ajax docs that says it will switch from JSONP to JSON for same-origin requests. So if it's not automatic, the obvious fix is to add a function that checks for same-origin in the Javascript. But since this issue is hard to debug and may occur again for other extension developers, I think it would be better to patch the MW core so that it only strips user credentials for cross-origin JSONP requests ApiMain.php:180. I didn't want to make a patch for this without checking about the security implications, and also to ask if there is an existing utility function in MediaWiki which checks if a request is same-origin? I think both of these components address valid UX issues. If the UX testing data we gathered in the usability initiative has been of any value, the removal of collapsibleNav is going to be a notable UX regression. Especially the long language list on some pages, and the overall visual impact of them was quite big (they take up too much space by default, and attract too much attention, hiding them by default removed a lot of clutter). However I agree, the way it was implemented as sufficiently badly performant that it's OK to remove for now, but we really should invest in re-implementing this ASAP. However I don't think we should remove collapsibleTabs the same way. That one isn't too bad. Sometimes when messing locally with different things, a page might look broken.
Then I look at the response for a request like:
/load.php?debug=falselang=enmodules=mediawiki.skinning.interface%7Cskins.vector.stylesonly=stylesskin=vector*
And it's near impossible to figure out that something is wrong. In this case,
module mediawiki.skinning.interface could not be found.
debug=true makes no difference in this regard.
Had it been a regular request that isn't only=styles, it would've contained :
mw.loader.state({mediawiki.skinning.interface:missing});
We should probably treat this the same as we do in case of exceptions and other
errors in stylesheet requests, namely by prepending a comment to the response
body.

Although some of your points are valid I noticed you multiple times now closing and merging bugs in a more than questionable manner. Fact is: - most people will be confused by the description of bug 44197 (the only thing that is a little clearer is the title and that's it) - Bug 17212 is a *totally different* bug as Bawolff said.
