Clarifying that for now this is a WONTFIX for web.

I.E. MediaWiki itself will not use an actual font file for now, for the reasons
given in that wikitech link.

However, we do still want a consistent palette, and I believe the Wikipedia
mobile app will be using fonts.

[Maniphest] [Updated] T667: Vet Q2 measures of success

2014-10-23 Thread Qgil
Qgil added a comment.

! In T667#13578, @Awjrichards wrote:
//Developers→Project management infrastructure and documentation for best
 practices.//
I am a little unclear on what exactly this means

You are right. I have removed the infrastructure because it is implicit in the
goal of teams migrating (no infrastructure, no team will migrate). And then I
have based the measure of success not in the existence of the document (which
is just a tool) but about the effect of this tool (good collaboration between
teams and most active individual contributors, sharing a common protocol). I
will fine tune the measures of success at {T558}.

 //Developers→Burndown charts.//
Similar to above, what does this mean exactly?

Removed. Not because we will not have this feature (we will have it) but
because, again, it is a feature contributing to the actual goal of teams
migrating to Phabricator.

//Developers→Eliminate most uses of Trello/Mingle (Fundraising Tech exempt)//
I've already heard some feedback about this particular goal, which seems to
 be making some teams uneasy.

Yeah, you are again right. Pushing teams to change tools because we have a
deadline agreed with management rarely helps, and frequently creates even more
resistance. Then again, it is reasonable to say that yes, one day WMF teams
will be all using Phabricator instead of Trello / Mingle. A realistic and
measurable goal in the spirit of this top priority is {T825}. This assures a
critical mass in terms of volume of activity and diversity of teams, a trend
with no return that the minority will end up following.

Is this intended to be a mandate that every usage of Trello/Mingle is
eliminated (with the exception of FR Tech)? Or is this intended to be a goal
of the project to convince all the teams to abandon Trello/Mingle and flock
 to Phabricator?

With the goal reformulated, the mandate is still there, just not tied to end of
2014, and not needing to name any specific exceptions.

How do non-team-specific based usages of Trello/Mingle fit into this rubric
(eg Scrum of Scrums which uses a matrix view to represent work dependencies
that can't be recreated in Phabricator)?

E v e r y b o d y

If Scrum of Scrums can't make it now because there is a feature missing, please
create the tasks required and join the minority that will stay longer out of
Phabricator with a justified reason.

Also, I get uneasy when I see the word 'most' in a goal.

Yep, now it says more than half of teams and ongoing sprints.

 //Stretch goal:
Developers→Basic plan for Phabricator as code review tool//
I personally would prefer to see this as either a goal, or not a goal

Not a goal, then. I will keep it in the ECT goals for this quarter, but we will
play the regular game for the rest of the projects. There is a critical mass of
code review champions that have a declared personal interest in pushing
Phabricator in this front -- deprecating gitblit and Gerrit sooner than later.
There is an ongoing request of one of our developer for a part-time allocation
to this project, and others are already contributing at their own risk, on
their own time. In fact, not being an official top priority seems to be an
incentive for some. :)

//Developers→Project management infrastructure and documentation for best
 practices.//
I am a little unclear on what exactly this means

You are right. I have removed the infrastructure because it is implicit in
the goal of teams migrating (no infrastructure, no team will migrate). And
then I have based the measure of success not in the existence of the document
(which is just a tool) but about the effect of this tool (good collaboration
between teams and most active individual contributors, sharing a common
protocol). I will fine tune the measures of success at {T558}.

 //Developers→Burndown charts.//

Pushing teams to change tools because we have a
deadline agreed with management rarely helps, and frequently creates even
more resistance. Then again, it is reasonable to say that yes, one day WMF
teams will be all using Phabricator instead of Trello / Mingle. A realistic
and measurable goal in the spirit of this top priority is {T825}. This
assures a critical mass in terms of volume of activity and diversity of
teams, a trend with no return that the minority will end up following.

Is this intended to be a mandate that every usage of Trello/Mingle is
eliminated (with the exception of FR Tech)? Or is this intended to be a goal
of the project to convince all the teams to abandon Trello/Mingle and flock
 to Phabricator?

With the goal reformulated, the mandate is still there, just not tied to end
of 2014, and not needing to name any specific exceptions.

How do non-team-specific based usages of Trello/Mingle fit into this rubric
(eg Scrum of Scrums which uses a matrix view to represent work dependencies
that can't be recreated in Phabricator)?

 E v e r y b o d y will fit.

If Scrum of Scrums can't make it now because there is a feature missing,
please create the tasks required and join the minority that will stay longer
out of Phabricator with a justified reason.

Also, I get uneasy when I see the word 'most' in a goal.

Yep, now it says more than half of teams and ongoing sprints.

 //Stretch goal:
Developers→Basic plan for Phabricator as code review tool//
I personally would prefer to see this as either a goal, or not a goal

Not a goal, then. I will keep it in the ECT goals for this quarter, but we
will play the regular game for the rest of the projects. There is a critical
mass of code review champions that have a declared personal interest in
pushing Phabricator in this front -- deprecating gitblit and Gerrit sooner
than later. There is an ongoing request of one of our developer for a
part-time allocation to this project, and others are already contributing at
their own risk, on their own time. In fact, not being an official top
priority seems to be an incentive for some. :)

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72389

--- Comment #6 from Tisza Gergő gti...@wikimedia.org ---
(In reply to Bawolff (Brian Wolff) from comment #1)
Appears to be accientally caused by f7be7e6a (Abbreviation threshold for
files with long names was set to 140 for commons as a foreign repo, but kept
at 160 on actual commons, thus breaking all files with a name between
 140-160 bytes long)

Eventually we want to get rid of filenames in URLs completely (bug 64214).
Although I suppose some form of redirect would still be needed at that point,
to not break all hotlinks.

 * A simple improvement might be to fire the warning only some (fraction
of) seconds after the user has stopped typing.

We already do that – the username is checked 250 ms after the user stops typing
(plus a couple milliseconds for the API request). This delay was mostly added
to prevent unnecessary network requests rather than as user experience
improvement, perhaps it should be increased.

[Bug 72415] New: Many false positive warnings about missing continuation parameter

2014-10-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72415

Bug ID: 72415
Summary: Many false positive warnings about missing
continuation parameter
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: API
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: listenle...@gmail.com
CC: bjor...@wikimedia.org, bryan.tongm...@gmail.com,
roan.katt...@gmail.com, s...@reedyboy.net
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

The API shows the warning about missing continuation parameters even when it is
inappropriate. Many false positive warnings will hide the warnings that are
really relevant. There are two groups of false positives:

1. Queries that just can't be continued:

http://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/w/api.php?action=querymeta=tokensformat=jsonfm

Why should I add a continuation parameter for a simple query to get a token?
Just don't show a warning for meta submodules (I think these are the only that
can't be continued).

2. Queries that could be continued, but won't be continued:

http://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/w/api.php?action=queryprop=revisionsformat=jsonfmrvlimit=1titles=Main%20Page

I am interested in the latest revision only, otherwise I wouldn't have set the
limit to 1, so the warning is useless for me.

I can think of three different solutions for this group:

1. Don't show a warning for queries with an explicit limit=1, as these are the
queries that the user most likely doesn't want to continue.
2. Don't set the warning directly, but add a parameter to the continuation
data, i.e. return

query-continue: {
revisions: {
rvcontinue: 115406,
showwarning:
}
}
When the client continues the query, he should add all parameters from the
continuation data, so he will include the showwarning parameter in the next
query, which can be used to show the warning in the second answer.
3. Provide a nocontinue parameter, which can be used by the client to suppress
both the warning and the continuation data.

[Bug 72416] New: Parsoid output does not include Mediawiki:common.css

2014-10-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Bug ID: 72416
Summary: Parsoid output does not include Mediawiki:common.css
   Product: Parsoid
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal

  Reporter: kel...@kiwix.org
CC: elitr...@gmail.com, jforres...@wikimedia.org,

Parsoid output has broken output because Mediawiki:common.css is not included.

For example:
http://parsoid-lb.eqiad.wikimedia.org/frwiki/Guerre_froide?oldid=108085194

Here the original version:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Guerre_froideoldid=108085194

And with the visual editor:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Guerre_froideoldid=108085194veaction=edit

Like you can see the infobox width is huge probably because there is no rule
for the infobox_v2 CSS class.

[Bug 72417] New: Put the model and format tags before the text tag.

2014-10-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72417

Bug ID: 72417
Summary: Put the model and format tags before the text
tag.
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Export/Import
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: daniel.kinz...@wikimedia.de
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

According to export-0.9.xsd, the model and format tags follow the text
tag. That is however quite annoying when processing the XML event stream, since
it means we do not know how to process the contents of the text tag when we
receive it. Adding model and format at the end was simply an oversight on
my part when I introduced them.

Outputting these tags before the text tag would be simple to do, but would
technically be a breaking change to the export format. I see no good way to
make this backwards compatible, aside from outputting these tags twice.

As a stop gap, model and format could be included as attributes of the text
tag. This is however rather inconsistent with the rest of the format, and would
also need to be included in a new version of the XSD.

[Bug 72108] VisualEditor: [Regression wmf4] Link continuation is broken

--- Comment #5 from D Chan dc...@wikimedia.org ---
(In reply to Roan Kattouw from comment #3)
Oh also: the bug as filed (select link, start typing, replacement text is
linked in CE but not in DM) also appears to be caused by the unicorn change,
presumably because such replacements are now considered simple rather than
complex so as to not get in the way of IMEs that replace text?

Actually, I think it's just due to the basic issue with link continuation when
typing. The change of the linked word (a href=xbefore/a) to the first
character typed (a href=xa/a) works correctly. But then the continuation
does not occur, so we end up with just the first character linked (a
href=xa/after).

When applying sticky toolbars, using tooltips (i.e. the copyright tooltip and
error tooltips) would result in the tooltip bubbles hiding elements being
interacted with. In terms of the UI change, it is proposed to implement a
sticky notification bar (basically as part of the sticky section edit headers)
replacing those secion-wide tooltips.

[Bug 72183] New serialization code needs to support language fallback

2014-10-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72183

--- Comment #1 from Adrian Lang adrian.l...@wikimedia.de ---
After a discussion today we agreed to the following:

* The data model has to have knowledge of the fact that an entity can have a
term for another language than the term is in
* The data model serializers and deserializers have to have knowledge of the
fact that there are language fallbacks

Premises:
* We want to provide a view on our data which includes for example language
fallbacks (for the API, for wbEntity, …)
* We want to enable users (for example the JavaScript frontend code) to work
with these views
* Data model deserializers should return data model objects
* Data model deserializers should not lose information

Necessary steps:
* Make TermList a TermMap
* Make TermMap::_construct respect the keys of its parameter
* Make TermMap::setTerm expect a language parameter (adapt callers in DM)
* Make EntityDeserializer::deserializeValuePerLanguageSerialization respect and
pass the keys
* Make EntityDeserializer::setAliasesFromSerialization respect and pass the
keys
* Make EntityDeserializer::assertIsValidValueSerialization assert on the key
* Make FingerprintSerializer::serializeValuePerLanguageArray (and everybody
above it) aware of the fact that there are different ways to serialize a map of
terms (with and without keys, with and without fallback terms included)
* Write high-level, implementation-independent documentation on this decision

The view counter was removed in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/150699/

But this is an essential to determine which pages are most useful to users or
just popular.

The reasons for it having flaws do not apply to company / intranet wikis.

On my company wikis I use a list on the start page 30 most popular pages as a
quick jump link list for unexperienced users.

Every shit blog, CMS etc has a list of the most popular pages. This cannot be
done with trackers.

Furthermore you hereby encourage admins to use evil tracking software. That is
so super backward thinking...

Please bring it back and leave it an optional decision for the admin to use or
not to use it.

MEDIAWIKI IS NOT WIKIPEDIA!

[Bug 71744] Username taken warning is too fast and alarming

--- Comment #2 from Nemo federicol...@tiscali.it ---
(In reply to Bartosz Dziewoński from comment #1)
 This delay was
mostly added to prevent unnecessary network requests rather than as user
experience improvement, perhaps it should be increased.

Worth trying, IMHO. I think it's safe to assume the user takes at least 1
second to type password twice and confirm the form?
