[Bug 61532] New: Not my own work section could be confusing to someone who skim reads

2014-02-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61532

Bug ID: 61532
   Summary: Not my own work section could be confusing to someone
who skim reads
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: UploadWizard
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: bawolff...@gmail.com
CC: aarcos.w...@gmail.com, bawolff...@gmail.com,
fflo...@wikimedia.org, gti...@wikimedia.org,
mtrac...@member.fsf.org, nischay...@gmail.com
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

Imagine someone isn't reading all the steps very carefully

*User goes through steps like normal until release rights step
*User selects "This file is not my own work"
*User fills out source and author
*User sees the long list of links, assumes its additional unimportant info, and
doesn't read
*User is confused why the next button doesn't work

Suggestion: If user clicks next button, but can't proceed because hasn't filled
out the "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work"
section, that section should be highlighted, or it should otherwise be
indicated that that is what the user is missing.

Could we simply remove this feature from the extension? It appears to have been
tacked on as an afterthought, without a cohesive story about why and how it
fits with the rest of the extension. (I contrast that with the primary
functionality of the extension, which strikes me as a deliberate and practical
solution for a well-defined problem.)

Hiding it behind a configuration variable does lower the stakes a lot, but it
still plants a flag on this problem and adds another code artifact with which
alternative solutions will have to contend.

[Bug 61534] New: When trying to add a topic for testing an error occurs

2014-02-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61534

Bug ID: 61534
   Summary: When trying to add a topic for testing an error occurs
   Product: MediaWiki extensions

Intention:
I tried to create a topic to test the Flow extension (On
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Flow/Developer_test_page). Just with
random title and text.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Flow/Developer_test_page
2. Add a topic with random title and text
3. Try the "Add topic" and "Preview" buttons

Actual Results:
Every time when I click on "Add topic" an error occurs with the text "An error
occurred.
The error message received was: Exception Caught: Failed contacting Parsoid".
When I click on "Preview" I get an error also; "An unexpected error occurred."

Expected Results:
That Flow would add my topic so that it is publicly visible.

Reproducible: Always

Removing "easy" keyword - some of comments in Gerrit:

‹wgScriptExtension is still used in core to determine path to php files in PHP

Otherwise mw will keep generating files to load/api.php5›

‹It seems like the wrong thing to do as a first step. It seems more sensible to
remove $wgScriptExtension, convert the .php5 files to redirects instead of
inclusion, and announce deprecation. But actually breaking the URLs seems like
something we should do as a last step, if we do it at all.›

As I said above. evereything is working fine *except* Wikimedia sites. And it
seems to be only when accessing the eqiad servers. When changing /etc/hosts to
use cache in Netherlands, it works much better (although Javascript loading is
still very slow). So it doesn't make sense to contact my ISP, who will rightly
send me off.

But then it would be inconsistent with the other help messages. If we are going
to change one, I would prefer all would be changed.

Hmm, I definitely agree we should explicitly name the preference instead of
using the word "this".

[Bug 30959] Give editintro an own css id/class

Bawolff (Brian Wolff)  changed:

--- Comment #2 from Bawolff (Brian Wolff) ---
To clarify bug report:
When you use the editintro url parameter to add some template to the top of the
edit page (for example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?editintro=:Main_Page&action=edit
. People often do this to have custom help text), the included template should
be contained within a tag, which has some class (say mw-editintro). So
you would have TEMPLATE HERE instead of current
system where template is just plopped in without a containing tag.

See also EditPage::showCustomIntro in includes/EditPage.php for where its
implemented.

>Best would be if the content was passed to [[MediaWiki:Editintro]] for full
>customization options.

That seems overkill. Lets stick with the css class, unless you have a
compelling use case for using the message.

categoryTreeExpandNode is not a function in the ext.categoryTree module

I still think there is a (low-priority) bug here, as we shouldn't return a
"parameter doesn't exist" error for a "parameter disabled" error. Error
messages should reflect their actual causes, otherwise it confuses people.

Hmm, there putting an edit notice into a mediawiki message, which is slightly
different from the original request of a url pramater to trigger an editintro

[Bug 35746] {{PAGENAME}} must not escape special chars, otherwise it makes {{#ifeq:}} unusable

2014-02-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35746

--- Comment #15 from Philippe Verdy  ---
{{URLENCODE:...}} supports three styles of encoding.

{{PAGENAMEE}} uses the deprecated "WIKI" style; but still with its own
differences!

See [[mw:Manual:PAGENAMEE encoding]] for extensive details.

What a mess !

And yes Bawolff (Brian Wolff) is correct about the way to fix things when
comparing pagenames: you have to consistantly use {{PAGENAME:...}} or
{{PAGENAMEE:...}} on all texts to compare with #ifeq: and #switch. This trick
should also continue working after the proposed patch of #ifeq: and #switch in
order to decode HTML entities (in addition to trimming them) in their
parameters before comparing strings, even if they continue return strings with
HTML entities.

Can we figure out a way to make this work for all messages? Would something as
easy as reducing the space above the message and adding some space below be
enough?

> Hmm, I definitely agree we should explicitly name the preference instead of

This should probably be done regardless of other improvements to the styling.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61099

--- Comment #5 from Erwin Dokter  ---
Perhaps off-topic, but I have to ask: Why does mixin only add the -webkit-
prefix for linear-gradient, and not the -moz- prefix? Even weirder, why is the
*legacy* -webkit- version there and not the -moz- prefix?

The prefix-less linear-gradient property was not introduced until Firefox 16.
Older versions still require the -moz- prefix. Around the same time, the
non-legacy -webkit- version was introduced. So it seems weird to have one but
not the other. Also, Opera up until 11.6 still requires the -o- prefix. Is it
worth adding that?

Bug ID: 61536

Parameters "other_fields" and "other_fields_1" are mostly meant for use by
other templates customizing {{Information}} template but they sometimes could
be used by experienced users when combined with {{Information_field}} template.
The field is a hack meant for injecting HTML code into the table created by
{{information}} template, in order to add additional fields. The field should
not be included unless is needed. Otherwise unexperienced users use the field
in a manner not intended and break the HTML structure of the page. In the past
that was resulting in pages which rendered correctly in some browsers and
incorrectly in others.

The default upload by the UploadWizard should not include "|other_fields="
field. The earlier upload tools did not add nor does the recommended empty
template on the {{Information}} template documentation.

[Bug 61099] Make Vector's basic styles image-independent

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61099

--- Comment #6 from Erwin Dokter  ---
On-topic again... I have some CSS here to make the Vector tabs completely
image-independent. There is a one-pixel discrepancie with active tabs, which i
think is way too minor to fix (can you spot it?) There is no fallback (yet),
just a proof of concept for the tabs.

Paste this in your vector.css:

div#content {
/* Reset -1px margin */
margin-top: inherit;
}
div.vectorMenu ul {
/* Reset top border for drop-down menu */
border-top: 1px solid #a7d7f9;
}
div.vectorTabs,
div.vectorTabs span {
/* Tab break */
background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(bottom, #a7d7f9 0%, #fff 100%);
background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(bottom, #a7d7f9 0%, #fff 100%);
background-image: linear-gradient(to top, #a7d7f9 0%, #fff 100%);
background-size: 1px 100%;
}
div.vectorTabs ul li {
/* Tab background */
background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(bottom, #e8f2f8 0%, #fff 100%);
background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(bottom, #e8f2f8 0%, #fff 100%);
background-image: linear-gradient(to top, #e8f2f8 0%, #fff 100%);
}
div.vectorTabs ul li.selected {
background-image: none;
background-color: #fff;
/* Fix bottom border for active tab */
border-bottom: 1px solid #fff;
}

[Bug 60220] Move wiki.toolserver.org to WMF

> This brings me to the question *who* is going to move the wiki. That

The move of the content (bug #60415) is a two part process: nosy (or amette)
switches the WMDE Toolserver wiki to read-only and creates an XML dump.
Someone with import rights on the WMF Toolserver wiki then imports this and
tests that it worked.

Unfortunately, it's not up to them to determine the time to move: First, the
WMF Toolserver wiki needs to have been set up.

[Bug 60484] CirrusSearch: Don't index text in visually hidden elements

2014-02-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60484

--- Comment #7 from Nik Everett  ---

The biggest case I can think of for excluding text from search is the license
information on commons. Please take that as an example. Maybe it is the only
example I think it is pretty important.
1. The license information doesn't add a whole lot to the result. Try
searching commons with Cirrus for "distribute", "transmit", or "following" and
you'll very quickly start to see the text of the CC license. And the searches
find 14 million results. Heaven forbid you want to find "distributed
transmits" or something. You'll almost exclusively get the license highlighted
and you'll still find 14 million results. This isn't _horrible_ because the
top results all have "distribute" or "transmit" in the title but it isn't
great.
2. Knock on effect from #2: because relevance is calculated based on the
inverse of the number of documents that contain the word the then every term in
the CC license is worth less then words not in the license. I can't point to
any example of why that is bad but I feel it in my bones. Feel free to ignore
this.  I'm probably paranoid.
3. Entirely self serving: given #1, the contents of the license take up an
awful lot of space for very little benefit. If I had more space I could make
Cirrus a beta on more wikis. It is kind of a lame reason and I'm attacking the
space issue from other angles so maybe it'll be moot long before we get this
deployed and convince the community that it is worth doing.
4. Really really self serving: if .nosearch is the right solution and is
useful then it is super duper easy to implement. Like one line of code, a few
tests, and bam. Its already done, just waiting to be rebased and merged. It
was so easy it would have taken longer to estimate the effort then to propose
an implementation.
I really wouldn't be surprised if someone couldn't come up with great reason
why #1 is silly and we just shouldn't do it.

The big problem with the nosearch class implementation is that it'd be pretty
simple to abuse and hard to catch the abuse because the text is still on the
page. One of the nice things about the solution is you could use a web
browser's debugger to highlight all the text excluded from search by writing a
simple CSS class.
