TASK DESCRIPTION Now that we have data model services (and numerous other components), we need to automatically generate a change log of what changes (including in components) are new to a deployment branch vs previous branch. ideally this should also find DEPLOY notes and referenced bugs, which need for our deployment notes and calendar. I used to mainly look at the git log for Wikibase (sometimes with --grep) and that was enough. I also looked at my gerrit dashboard at the list of merged changes. I think we reached a point with our components that we need another, better solution. When a new branch gets deployed, we need to be aware of what changes are actually going out, if cache epoch needs to be bumped or other config changes, and users should be informed of important, relevant changes. The case is made often that descriptions as they exist are evil. They are atrocious Why do we not get rid of all that rubbish. [and replace with] Automated descriptions … can easily be improved upon in two ways .. I agree in general, except for items that don’t have much data, e.g. person’s life years, (Or have too much data that can’t be selected easily, e.g. 10 occupations but only 1 is really notable). For people: I mostly copy the description from Getty ULAN: that’s very good, even if the life years are unknown (thus set too wide, or missing). So my point is, there should also be an algorithm to decide whether to replace the manual description. Why people invest time in writing “rubbish”: because there’s no worse description than a missing description. Most everything should have an EN description, to allow a user to understand what that is, esp in an auto-complete list. I am just one Wikidatan but it would be great if others could also keep Wikidata in mind while browsing Wikipedia. Can we publish this gadget in all languages on Wikidata? Maybe we should create a project on Wikidata called Wikipedia? I totally agree, people don't really realize yet that Wikidata is not really another project but another aspect of the same project. An example is the data quality question (I had to answer this one more time today with enwiki chemist bot owner), «is data quality of Wikidata enough for Wikipedia»). Hoi, This gadget is in active use on many Wikipedias. It makes a big difference because it is part of the extended Wikidata search in those Wikipedias. When I have to disambiguate between multiple items, I add statements so that I see the difference between items. I can then decide if I need another item or not because Reasonator has its automated descriptions always up to date. I am seeing items twice in wikidata.org's search suggester drop-down.
In a new Firefox private window, visit
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Random, click in the search box, and type
Padma Sa.
Most of the time duplicate results appear in the dropdown list of suggestions
under the search field:

Watching the network traffic in the development console, there are two
identical API requests for `action=wbsearchentities` of Padma, then two
identical requests for Padma S and then two identical searches for Padma Sa:

once there are few enough results, you see the results from the second API
request appended in the search suggester dropdown.
This also happens when I type Albert Ein, I get two sets of 6 results
returned, and the search dropdown combines them. Yet sometimes I only see one
API request and the search dropdown shows unique matches, until I type more or
backspace. If I paste a search string it seems there's reliably only one
request. Maybe overlapping key and change events are causing this.
I haven't looked at the code, but the duplicate API requests might be
revealing some search results API issues:
- consider aborting API requests in flight if a new request obsoletes them.
- don't make the same API request twice
- also don't specify a misleading falsy value with `continue=0`, just
`continue=` is fine
This sounds much like {T109697}, but happening in a different place.

One also has to be careful with qualifiers etc. For example, the start end end of a spouse statement should be copied to its symmetric version, but there might also be qualifiers that should not be copied like this. I would like to work on a proposal for how to specify such things. It would be good to coordinate there. A first step (even before adding any statement to Wikidata) could be to add inferred information to the query services and RDF exports. This will make it easier to solve part of the problem first without having too many discussions in parallel. We do have fairly good gender metadata (and getting better all the time!), so we can still do gender-specific relationship searches where needed. It also avoids having to force a binary gender approach - we are in the odd position of being able to give a nuanced entry in P21 but can only say if someone is a sister or brother. I think this is quite important. I think properties should focus on one thing at a time and there is no need to state both gender and family relationship in the same statement. Also, are we really sure we don't currently have linguistic issues? I bet there is at least one language in the world where sister and brother are not two distinct words.
