TASK DESCRIPTIONWith wikidata, following the recent update, when text is pasted with leading spaces or a tab, the lookahead function used to be able to ignore the leading characters and focus on the text for its search. The chomp function has disappeared.

" is a text copy from the description field and it used to be able to be pasted into "instance of", and remove the superfluous spaces in its lookup. It seems that the wikidata API is slow overall, so this might be resolved by external work.

Congrats! That's great!

But I am afraid that we need to do some cleanup of the already existing values. 
For example the “URI used in RDF”  for GND identifiers was 
"http://d-nb.info/gnd/$1/about/rdf; that is the URI of the file describing the 
entity in RDF and not "http://d-nb.info/gnd/$1;.
I believe it's a good use case for a feature that would allow to protect 
statements from good faith mistakes that could completely beak a mapping and 
all tools that use it.

We could probably pre-process the input, yes. Though I am not sure we should encourage these things... while something like case-insensitive match is common search functionality, pasting URLs etc. with magic rules seems to be going a bit too far. But if old one supported it, fine. I wish there were some docs though or tests which extra syntaxes we process. So far I've got:


URL - should it match only wikidata URL? Would http://google.com/Q42 also look for Q42 (which is kinda weird)?
Parens removal - (Q42) is the same as Q42. Should it work for others too, e.g. (P42)? (L42)? (Douglas Adams)? Should (Q42 and Q42 and ())Q42() also work?


If this fails, the regex /.*(\b\w{2,})/s tried to grep the last ASCII sequence from the users input, and parse that as an entity ID

That's not how Elastic search currently works, in general, we don't have ID parsing etc. In fact, Elastic index has no idea what "ID" is. We match the title against Elastic index. We could add an extra step of ID-parsing, but this complicates things quite a bunch, since if we don't run the search we don't have the necessary data. We could parse ID and then extract it and run the search on it, but that looks like duplicating the work. For unhelpful file names, I want to extract the old and new file names from the move log whose change reason is meaningless or ambiguous, and then train a model to classify these file names. Just keep using wgsearchentities. It now uses Cirrus as a backend, instead of
SQL. That should provide better performance, and better ranking.

Correction: this happens on any item with two identical statements, regardless of whether the property has constraints or not. (Another example: Denmark (Q35)’s head of government (P6).) I think Laura raised a very good point here.
One question, broader :

is Wikidata team thinking about moving their dataset over *block-chain*?
That, I do believe, would incentivise people to participate, maintain, and
even craft useful thing with clear licenses (eventually profiting based on
utility of a thing ) .


Again, the possibility to compute / process things that are of public
utility / governance depends on accessibliity to data.
Or, very large computation / legal / negitation power of a few stakeholders.

Making data accessisble from multiple stakehodlers from public audiences,
or at least mirroring the meta-data, would allow a sane "competition" /
collaboration in governance - with also concrete applications saving $$$ ,
like preventing companies collusions.

I also tried to connect with OpenCorporates - research and CEO.
No answer so far.

When showing labels from fallback languages we do have little language
indicators in other places. I believe we should have this here as
well. Otherwise I believe it is confusing where certain labels
suddenly come from because you might not see them when going to the
actual item.

I'm slightly leaning toward showing both.

It helps in the cases where you want to get an understanding about how
large an item is and if it is worth your attention. If people actually
use it... Not sure. They definitely do in recent changes and history.

I'd say in this case we could get rid of the word/byte count. To get a
good glimpse of the quality of the item I'd say we'd want to show
count of statements (excluding identifier statements), identifiers and
sitelinks.

OK, just asked. Their reply was that they "reserves the right under paragraph 
3.3 of ODbL to release the database under different terms", which is to say 
their data is NOT free because they want to control how and where the data is 
used.
Are we starting to see "free vs open" all over again, this time with data 
instead of software?

The code that made this possible was in EntitySearchTermIndex::getEntityIdsMatchingSearchTerm, introduced via T117763. The idea was intentionally trivial:


The first step always tried to parse the users input as an entity ID.
If this fails, the regex /.*(\b\w{2,})/s tried to grep the last ASCII sequence from the users input, and parse that as an entity ID. This covers full URLs as well as copy-pastes like "(Q42)".
All this is cheap.
In addition the term table was queried in two steps: exact matches first, then prefix matches.


This code path is not executed any more with the switch to the new EntitySearchElastic implementation, introduced via T125500.

Ah, I didn’t think about that. Happens when you have two identical statements (same main snak hash) with a property that doesn’t have any constraints. We add a NullResult for each of them so they still appear in the API response, we try to sort all the results (including the NullResults), the snaks are identical so the comparer tries to compare the constraints, boom.
