By the next deployment of Wikidata, the first year of the next week, we will be able to properly track Wikidata usages from Lua (T179923) - so all dev blockers are solved, and it is up to configuration/operation.

Operation implications


wbc_entity_usage - expected to grow (any row with eu_aspect=X may be replaced with few rows), but AFAIK this should be only a slight growth (up to say x4, where All usage (X) is replaced with other (O)/label (L)/sitelink (S)/alias (A), and usually less). This is under assumptions that (T151717) is not deployed - e.g we dont track claims (they are just O usages), but eventually, this task becomes relevant too.
recentchanges - expected to see much less updates from wikidata (non relevant updates)


Suggested deployment plan
I suggest the following timeline for deployment:


T179923 - week of 2018-01-02  - enable it on cawiki, cewiki, elwiki, kowiki, trwiki (@Ladsgroup if this is OK from you and all stack holders, it means we can abandon https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/398823/ )
If everything works well, we can deploy the next week (week of 2018-01-08) to few large wikis for evaluations and if all rocks we can deploy everywhere.

CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTION...*Select n rows from the revision table that do not have a corresponding entry in the content table (a WHERE NOT EXISTS subquery is probably better than a LEFT JOIN for this, because of LIMIT).

*For each such row, construct a corresponding row for the content and slots table[***][]. The rows can either be collected in an array for later mass-insert, or inserted individually, possibly buffered in a transaction*Repeat until there are no more rows in revision that have no corresponding row in content. This will eventually be the case, since web requests are already populating the content table when creating new rows in revision.

TASK DESCRIPTIONPopulate empty ar_rev_id fields:


Determine how many rows in archive have ar_rev_id = NULL. Let's call that number m.
Reserve m (or m+k, for good measure) IDs in the revision table:
Make a note of max( max( rev_id ), max( ar_rev_id ) ), let's call it b.
Insert a row with rev_id = b+m+k into the revision table, and delete it again, to bump the auto-increment counter.
For any row in archive that has ar_rev_id = NULL, set ar_rev_id to a unique id between b+1 and b+m+k. This could be done via a temporary table, or programmatically.


Make ar_text and ar_flags unused:


For each row in archive that has a non-null ar_text field, insert a row into the text table, copying ar_text to old_text and ar_flags to old_flags. Set ar_text_id to the old_id from the newly created text row.
Set ar_text and ar_flags to the empty string everywhere.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Set MediaWiki to write content meta-data to the old AND the new columns (via config[**]). Don't forget to also do this for new entries in the archive table.
Wait a bit and watch for performance issues caused by writing to the new table.
Run maintenance/populateContentTable.php to populate the content table. The script needs to support chunking (and maybe also sharding, for parallel operation).
Keep watching for performance issues while the new table grows.

Operation of populateContentTable.php:

Select n rows from the revision table that do not have a corresponding entry in the content table (a WHERE NOT EXISTS subquery is probably better than a LEFT JOIN for this, because of LIMIT).
For each such row, construct a corresponding row for the content and slots table[*][**]. The rows can either be collected in an array for later mass-insert, or inserted individually, possibly buffered in a transaction.
The content_models, content_formats, and content_roles tables will be populated as a side-effect, by virtue of calling the assignId() function in order to get a numeric ID for content models, formats, and roles.
When all rows in one chunk have been processed, insert/commit the new rows in the content table and wait for slaves to catch up.
Repeat until there are no more rows in revision that have no corresponding row in content. This will eventually be the case, since web requests are already populating the content table when creating new rows in revision.

Set MediaWiki to read content meta-data from the new content table.
Set MediaWiki to not populate the ar_text and ar_flags fields.
Watch for performance issues caused by adding a level of indirection (a JOIN) to revision loads.
Set MediaWiki to insert content meta-data ONLY into the new columns in the content table. (To allow this, the old columns must have a DEFAULT).
Enable MCR support in the API and UI (as far as implemented).
Optional: Drop the redundant columns from the page, revision, and archive tables, see Removing Redundant Information above. Schema changes desired for revision storage optimization may be applied at the same time.

Looking at Q45825750, there were 7 edits made very quickly right after another, so it seems reasonable that a links update would be in progress, holding the lock, and then another links update would be unable to get the lock and fail. However, AFAIK failed jobs are supposed to retry after an hour, so I'm not sure why that didn't happen here. So probably if we round timestamp and remove sessionId your proposal for dattaset #1 is safe to keep long term (cc @mforns for anything I might be missing)

I think it depends highly on how drastically we sanitize the potentially identifying fields (user agent and client IP) and the fields that can indicate user acivity/features (query, location).
Intuitively it seems to me that we can keep this data in a private store indefinitely if sanitized. But having those sensitive 4 fields in the same data set will make it difficult to publicize, even if sanitized. I don't know how frequent are WDQS queries, but I imagine they are several orders of magnitude smaller than pageviews. Thus the buckets of this data set are likely to be sparse and small, which increases the threat to user privacy.

If we wanted to make this public, I'd go for removing the geographic location field entirely, and probably for daily or monthly resolution instead of hourly (depending on bucket size).
Also, splitting the data set in several unrelatable thematic data sets could help: queries by country, queries by user agent, session queries, etc.

Perhaps we should enforce rate limits for edit and creation on wikidata. The entry in $wgRateLimits that affects edits on all sitesis currently:

so, for regular users (and bots), there is no limit on editing (and no separate limit is enforced on creation - core doesn't even check such a limit, but wikibase does).

I propose to change this for wikidata.org to the following:

A limit of 10 may be too restrictive though. Perhaps it would make sense to introduce separate rate limits for bots. I am not entirely sure how you define "uptime" here? If you try to
access query.wikidata.org, it'd be very close to 100%. That said, we had
a couple of incidents where one or more servers failed, causing some
queries to get stuck or be rejected, see

These do not take the whole service down, so I am not sure how they
qualify uptime-wise.
