[Wikidata] "Wikipedia and IIIF" will be topic for IIIF community call this Wednesday

2018-08-13 Thread James Heald

Hi everybody,

A heads-up that "Wikipedia and IIIF" is the proposed subject for the
IIIF community call this week -- see
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/iiif-discuss/wy2uRl_ukJ0

The IIIF community call is a one-hour conference call on Zoom (people
can also dial in by telephone), that happens once every two weeks, with
either a technical or a community focus -- see
https://iiif.io/community/call/ .

This call will be in two days time, on Wednesday, the 15th of August, at
mid-day Eastern time (ie 5pm London time, 6pm CET).

The scope will include all Wikimedia platforms (ie Commons, Wikidata,
etc), and presentations can be included by prior arrangement. It might
be good if someone from the structured data team could listen in, and
perhaps present the team's thoughts for upcoming IIIF-compatible and
accessible annotations ?

Background:

IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) is a Library and
GLAM led consortium developing standards for making images, image
metadata, and document metadata available over the web, so that content
provided by a GLAM (eg a scanned book) can be viewed in a multitude of
different viewers; and documents can be created combining or annotating
images, which remain served from their home institution's servers.

A small test service at present exists on Toolforge, which can interpret
IIIF-format requests to serve scaled Commons images or image-fragments.
This is currently used to display P2677 "relative position within image"
fragments, amongst other things, for example if this script is used to
turn those values into blue links:

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Husky/ifff-viewer-link.js

A developing agenda for the call can be found at
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_QGZjyYR38HfDtqgoJ-Tc5kIZXkqCETBbeWbzlCRzFk/edit

No pre-registration is necessary, but it may be worth checking
beforehand that your computer or smartphone is set up for Zoom.

It would be useful to be able to provide some input as to where we
currently are, and what we're hoping to achieve in this area.

   James.

Re: [Wikidata] Wikidata in the LOD Cloud

2018-08-13 Thread Lucas Werkmeister
Hi Ettore,

speaking as the person who’s entered the current data into the LOD
Cloud… no, I’m afraid it’s not as easy. Some of our namespaces (i. e.
RDF formatter URLs) are wrong, some of the namespaces in the LOD Cloud
are wrong, some datasets just don’t have a clean namespace (or they have
several of them), some of our properties map to more than one LOD Cloud
dataset, some LOD Cloud datasets map to more than one of our properties,
and in general this is all just a terrible mess.

We might be able to start cleaning up this mess if we create a property
“LOD Cloud identifier” or something like that, but I think if you try to
match datasets between the two databases automatically you’re just
asking for trouble.

Cheers,
Lucas

2018-08-13 Thread Jo
Amazing news indeed! I live nearby, if you like I could demo something I
created which connects OpenStreetMap.org to the Wikipedias through Wikidata
(20 minutes or so):

I used it on this page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Bridge_(Vietnam)

under External links.

Re: [Wikidata] Please support risk factor Wikidata property

2018-08-13 Thread Houcemeddine A. Turki
Dear Mr.,
I thank you for your answer. This is an absolutely interesting question. The
method we will use is based on PubMed Entrez API. Using a Python code, we
retrieve the number of PubMed publications jointly involving the name of the
disease and the name of the risk factor and we retrieve the PubMed ID of the
most relevant search result. As you already know, the relations having
important number of query results are more likely to be accurate. After we do
this, we will give the list of the retrieved risk factors to a number of
physicians for verification. After that, we will add them to Wikidata using
QuickStatements. As for the concerns you raised, they are absolutely accurate.
We can discuss them in details after the acceptance of the proposal. You can
also be a co-author of the work.
Yours Sincerely,
Houcemeddine Turki

Dear Houcemeddine,

interesting proposal, indeed. I left a comment on the page, which basically
says we need qualifiers and references. The references because some claims will
be controversial (even if backed up by literature), while I also see these
links as likely time bound, due to changing health policies (I can think of a
few other reasons), at least for the residence examples (I hope no one gets any
ideas about Q4 'risk factor' 'residence' 'war zone').

With kind regards,

Egon

Dear Mr. or Ms.,
I thank you for your efforts. I invite you to support the proposal of risk
factor as a Wikidata property. The property will be an excellent contribution
to Wikidata as it can allow this high-scale knowledge base to be useful for
digital epidemiology purposes. The proposal is available in
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/risk_factor. This
property is a generalization of the first property proposal I developed.
