What is more problematic than the p/q business:

If I run a SPARQL search at our endpoint - such as this one:

but they do not lenk to wd, wikidata, but into our database 
https://database.factgrid.de/entity/Q25. 

The same problem in the other direction: If our users have never seen a SPARQL 
search in their lives (and that's 100%) and if they now click at sample queries 
- they will qet Wikidata sample queries which do not work on our database - 
just as our P and Q numbers do not match.

Of course! More specifically, at OSM that's the only Q-numbers people are
aware of. All other ID systems do not have nearly the same level of
recognition.  It would be silly to wait for government agencies to switch
to the Q-numbers too, right?  Or to wait for 5-10 years until (and IF!) Q
numbers become more common at other projects that are large enough to
become well known, and use that potential future as a justification to not
use a much more convenient system for the next 10 years.  The cost of that
10 years of "wait and see" is a significant user confusion.

I think the extra parentesis produce more harm than good. Most of the time, VALUES is a relatively short single-value list, not a list of lists, so making it one item per line creates unnecessary hindrance to understanding and maintaining the query code. Daniel, it is not so clear cut.  Most users will not be exposed to a
"zoo".  Case in point - Open Street Map.  In OSM, the entire user base of
tens of thousands of people know the meaning of Q123. The "Q" prefix has a
strong identity in itself.  Anyone will instantly say - yes, it's a
Wikidata identifier attached to the majority of important OSM objects.  So
whenever someone sees an object with the tag  "wikidata=Q123" or
"brand:wikidata=Q123" or even "species:wikidata=Q123" they know that there
is a WD item describing this object, or the brand of this object (e.g.
Mc.Donalds store), or the tree species.

As Lydia said, Wikidata is a huge tree in a forest, overshadowing all other
trees.  It is totally ok for both OSM and some genetics storage to both use
the same prefix - there will be no confusion between the users of the two.
Yet both of them are likely to reference Wikidata itself.  Keeping "Q" as
primarily Wikidata identifier will help the users.  That's why I call this
a philosophical debate - on one hand, there is very real usability problem.
On the other, there is a philosophical dilemma - the best approach in a
hypothetical world.

Now that we also have Wikibase on OSM wiki, all of the metadata about those
tags is also stored in the Q numbers.  So   "wikidata" key itself is Q827
[1].  Now lets say at some point we decide to store an item's "class" in
osm Wiki, e.g.   "item_class=Q123".  How often do you think users will
confuse this Q123 to be wikidata's ID vs OSM wiki ID?  This is almost
certain to cause confusion, especially among the novice users, without
actually benefiting anyone except the philosophical "everything must be a
prefix".  Note that unlike Mediawiki, there are hundreds of different tools
in OSM, and they do not share anything except key-value pairs. So it would
not be possible to make the same "smart" interface for each of them.
People will have to use Q123 as a string.

Lastly, up until this morning, the Query Service hardcoded wd:, wdt:, and
other prefixes to always mean "current wiki" (conceptUri), which obviously
was very confusing -- wd:Q123 had different meaning depending on where you
ran it, and if you used federation query with Wikidata itself, you had to
hardcode a new prefix into your query to revert the meaning of wd: back to
wikidata's.  Luckily, it wasn't too hard of a fix that I hope will be
merged soon [2].

The dev team is committed to a strategy that is about building an
ecosystem around Wikidata. This means making Wikibase more usable and
useful outside Wikimedia. We have put words and work into this and we
will continue to do so. It matters to me that Wikidata is not a single
oasis in a big dessert but a big tree in flourishing jungle. We want
much more data to be open, machine-readable and accessible but it
doesn't have to all be and shouldn't all have to be on Wikidata.

TASK DESCRIPTIONAs a Wikidata editor I want to check which Wikidata entities are the most used on the Wikimedia projects (as the number of Wikimedia pages containing data from them, something similar to Special:MostTranscludedPages) in order to be aware of Wikidata's weaknesses, know how much damage a vandal can cause when modifying these entities and make decisions about them (watching, protecting, etc.).

Problem: Vandalism on a single Item can cause thousands of pages in several projects to appear vandalized.

I would expect to get a list of entities ordered by the number of Wikipedia pages on which these entities are used (first the most used one) with at least the following information about each of them:

The list should be as long as technically reasonable.

Perhaps only confirmed users should be able to access the list?

Apparently the test added for T209232: Add a unit test to Scribunto testing it is not vulnerable to CVE-2014-5461 is sometimes running out of allowed memory (set by ulimit most likely) before it runs out of Lua stack space (a constant set in Lua's C code), so it's giving a different error from the one that was expected.

Please expand in the report what's meant by "Wikidata usage", it's ambiguous and could be interpreted as items linked vs statement-level data reused via templates.

The exact definition of what "Wikidata usage" refers to on this dashboard is provided above the table, almost at the top of the page, right bellow the Wikidata logo:

Wikidata (WD) usage upon which the reported data are based excludes Sitelinks
[see: S usage aspect, wbc_entity_usage table in the Wikibase schema].

The definition of Wikidata usage is dependent upon the exact meaning of the item usage aspects as provided in the documentation of the wbc_entity_usage Wikibase table (also cf. this Diffusion page). The wbc_entity_usage table lacks a functional documentation in a sense that it does not explicitly state what user actions map onto what usage aspects, preventing the analytics from providing more meaningful, interpretable insights (e.g. going beyond expressions like "... a (S)itelink usage aspect would be registered following an application of this or that Lua module on the page..." - which are not very informative neither to our readers or editors, neither to us in analytics who take a behavioral, user-centered perspective on the data). A separate ticket will be opened soon to ask for a more thorough documentation of this table. In the meantime: this dashboards exludes only the (S)itelink usage aspect, so yes it does take into account the usage of statements (or, the so-called (C) usage aspect, quote from the documentation: "statements (C): certain statements (identified by their property id) from the entity are used").

Also: do we have the complementary chart?

How much of Wikidata, by class, is reused?

This might take a while, but I certainly agree that is worth answering the question.

[Wikidata] Wikidata Advanced Training 2018, in India 15 and 16 December

An advanced Wikidata training will take place on 15-16 December 2018 in
Mumbai (most possibly). Asaf Bartov (User:Ijon) will be the primary trainer
of this workshop.

Background and objectives

In India a few Wikidata trainings took place in recent years, notably User:Asaf
(WMF)/2017 Technical trainings in India
.
After this training of Asaf, we saw several Wikidata developments in India
including the formation of WikiProject India, a few label-a-thons, and
Indian Independence label-a-thon. Now, we are trying to take the Wikidata
experience in India to the next level.

The plan is:

Wikimedians in India who are

   - actively working on Wikidata and
   - aware of basic Wikidata editing

will attend the training to

   - learn more about advanced Wikidata editing
   - plan future Wikidata activities in India

TASK DESCRIPTIONI would like to point out some bugs present in the Wikidata - The Distributed Game. I am not asking it in Wikidata is because of the reason that it is being hosted in wmflabs.
The problems/suggestions are:
1)In the page https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-game/distributed/ , the option to open a link/option in new tab which appears when I press the scrolling button on mouse needs to be enabled(don't know whether its my browser issue).
2)In the same page, when I click an option(for example Common Category Matches), it redirects to the corresponding page. But, when I press the back button, it is not going to the previous page which I have visited recently.
3)I am able to find two options with same name ie. 'Automated Constraint Violation Correction'  in which only one link is working. So my suggestion is to remove the inactive link. If it needs to be kept, then the name of any one of them needs to be changed.
If I am not at the right place, please tell me where I need to mention this. SQL search is intentionally disabled on Wikidata, and all the data that would back it (i. e. the term_search_key and term_weight columns) is not available. If for some reason we want to enable SQL search again, all that data needs to be reconstructed first, but the reason we disabled it in the first case is to reduce database bloat, because wb_terms is such a worryingly large table.

Basically, keeping the ability to fall back to SQL search costs us large amounts of database storage space, which doesn’t seem to be worth it when we really want to be using CirrusSearch anyways. Does it mean SQL-based search doesn't work now on Wikidata, or that we need to do some more setup to make it work? Would setting useTermsTableSearchFields be enough? I confirm that generating the locales in the image, or installing locales-all (which has all locales generated) will make the étoile test work. I agree that it might be good for Blubber to automatically add one of those, but at least there's a workaround without Blubber changing. locales-all adds about 125 MB to the size of the image, so generating a UTF8 locale is probably better.

I don't know which locale should be used. The C.UTF8 locale does not seem to work with the test case.

I ran this command: docker run unitest env LC_ALL=fr_FR.UTF8 python3 -c "print('étoile')"

Varying that to set C.UTF8 or fi_FI.UTF8 gives different results. Fixed, as far as I can tell. Hey, I just wanted to say please contact the development team before doing something as major as this. The wb_terms table in production is fragmented (we emptied lots of its data) and never should be used as the search backend, specially in prod. The plan is to completely drop it. I would add another very important aspect - query prefixes - to build some
cohesion within Wikibase community.

Currently, WDQS hardcodes prefixes like "wd:" and "wdt:" to be based on the
"conceptUri" parameter.  Which means that any Wikibase installation that
has its own data would still use well-recognized wd* style prefixes, but
they would not mean the same thing as for Wikidata, causing confusion.
This is especially important because in most cases, people will want to use
federated queries to join data from their own Wikibase instances with the
Wikidata one.

My project - sophox.org (OpenStreetMap data and metadata) - has set up an
additional set of prefixes that mirror the wd* ones -- osmd, osmdt, ...,
but users still have to override the default wd: meaning to point back to
Wikidata, otherwise they cannot meaningfully use Wikidata federation.

This only happens on Wikidata, not on Test Wikidata. No idea why.
This happened before the wmf.6 deployment as well, we just didn’t notice it. Therefore, I’m removing this as a train blocker, since it’s more likely to be due to a wmf-config change IMHO.

Context: We used to use the wb_terms table for entity search, and for this it has two extra columns, term_search_key and term_weight. However, since we now use CirrusSearch for entity search on Wikidata (and have done so for, I think, at least a year? a while, at least), those columns were unnecessarily bloating the database, so in T188993 we wiped them. (The columns still exist because having a different table schema on some wikis would be icky, but they’re never written to nor read from.)

The error message

Using wb_terms table for wbsearchentities API action but not using search-related fields of terms table. This results in degraded search experience, please enable the useTermsTableSearchFields setting.
