I think automatic transformation based on regular expressions can only work for a very narrow set of applications. We need something that is more robust and scales better in terms of community involvement.

I think we could sidestep the grammar issue by using unit symbols ("m" for meter, "s" for second, etc - see T77983). These still need to be localized to some degree, but don't need plurals (as far as I know).

We would have to get the symbols from statements, and they would have to be multilingual values (or multiple mono-lingual values), but that is still much less complicated than trying to apply plural rules.

An alternative is to use MediaWiki i18n messages instead of entity labels. E.g. if the unit is Q11573, we could check if MediaWiki:wikibase-unit-Q11573 exists, and if it does, use it. We'd get internationalization including support for plurals for free.

We could actually combine all of these approaches in a fallback chain:


first check for a system message
then check for a symbol statement
then use the label
and if all fails, use the ID.

TASK DESCRIPTIONWe may create a new datatype for wikitext. Values may have simple html formatting (bold, italics, etc) and link (internal, external), but not templates, parser functions, magic words and most tags. The text may be:


Untranslated wikitext
Monolingual wikitext
Multilingual wikitext (most usually)


This may be exported as three ways:


Wikitext used in Wikimedia project (e.g. [[c:|Commons]] is a '''Wikimedia''' project.) (Default display in Wikidata interface; need to resolve T42128 first)
Wikitext used in other 3rd-party MediaWiki project (e.g. [[commons:|Commons]] is a '''Wikimedia''' project.)
HTML (e.g. Commons" class="remarkup-link" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/">Commons is a Wikimedia project.)


Use cases:


Several usage note properties (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P41 for example)
Pages like https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Tools/External_tools , which is proposed to be converted to items
File descriptions in Commons may contains links to other pages
