I speculated that php.getEntityId in mw.wikibase.lua sometimes returns junk due to a timeout when it tries to establish a network connection with the Wikidata database (that I know nothing about). On the other hand, I saw something yesterday that made me wonder if mw.title.new in mw.title.lua sometimes has a problem when it executes php.newTitle (see en:WP:VPT). And I ran into couple of confusing issues: RC page with only 'Wikidata edits' filter with the option ' Group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist' enabled shows (1) Just to confirm that the following is the expected behavior. If only one of the grouped changes is a wikidata change, then the collapsed state does not display the 'D' flag. At present, there's no problem having a category for the building. Smalyshev added a comment. @EBernhardson we have per-IP limits, and they work fine in 99% of cases. In this case, however, the query is bad enough that it is causing load even when only 5 instances of it run in parallel. Which would be not a big deal if it happened just once, but since it is hammering all the time, as soon as one of the heavy queries is finished, it is replaced with another instance of the same. So server is constantly running 5 heavy queries on top of the usual load, which brings it down. EBernhardson added a comment. I don't know if it would work as well here, but other services in the cluster user a cluster-wide semaphore via the PoolCounter service. Perhaps it would be a bit annoying to tie into, but it's a very simple service. TASK DESCRIPTIONThere are query sources for query service that produce a lot of very heavy queries very fast, bringing down the service. We could either drastically lower the limits (excluding legitimate users with longer queries or workloads that do not harm the service) or block that specific source until they fix their scripts.
Example:
141.2.108.223 repeatedly sends queries like:
SELECT ?cid ?article ?gnd WHERE { ?cid wdt:P227 ?gnd. ?article schema:about ?cid . filter( regex(str(?article), "en.wikipedia.org" )) } limit 1000 offset 185000
to the tune of tens of thousands per hour. E.g. on 2017-07-17, hour 16, there was 13970 such requests. Most of them are blocked by IP limits but unfortunately hundreds still pass through and harm the service, due to very long offset and large amount of data returned (may be also timing out and so not being cached).
This query obviously doesn't need to be repeated 10K+ times in a short period, so it looks like a broken bot. I'd like to block it and have tools to block such occurrences in the future. Not saying it's the right approach but something to consider as MobileFrontend's main purpose is formatting html content from editors that is not mobile friendly and providing a different skin for mobile (see Extension:MobileFrontend to get a list of things it does - and think about whether Wikidata uses/needs any of these). Not sure if all of them makes sense strategically for wikidata when all you seem to need is a responsive skin but worth thinking about. I am watching this page: https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ole%C5%A1nice_(Polsko) for several days and the error is still present (not purging as it can be useful for debugging). Another thing: it looks like all wikidata entries on the affected page are displaying this error simultaneously. daniel added a comment. The bad data seems to be coming in via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject(). mw.clone() is a candidate for returning bad data. Or bad data gets into the local cache somehow. JohnBlackburne added a comment. I mean to Category:Pages with script errors. The link at the top of the page lists them by the date they were added. As always seems to be the case with this error no edit triggers it; it can happen to actively edited pages or to pages that have not been edited for months or years. You make some change to a page that does not have anything to do with wikidata, preview the page and see the error, click preview again without changing anything and the error is gone. Jarekt added a comment. Daniel, I have not seen this error in some days now, but when it occurred purging was usually enough to fix it. It seemed to me that any save, page preview or purge of a page accessing Wikidata had some small probability of showing this error, and a new purge was a new cast of a dice. JohnBlackburne added a comment. It has always been the case that the pages can be fixed by purging – that was noted in the initial report. Purging is easy if you know to do it and how to do it, but many if not most editors, never mind readers, will not know to do so. And it is the nature of the problem that it can appear in almost any article, as probably most now have a template (Authority control, coords, cross-project linking templates) that uses Wikidata, from almost empty stubs to high importance featured articles. Māui Pōmare got added to the category 90 minutes ago. It has not been fixed and is still happening. daniel added a comment. @JohnBlackburne So you confirm that it is not happening any more. There are still bad renderings in the parser cache, but the root cause seems to have been fixed, su puring the page fixes the rendering. We should still find out what happened, and a mass purge of the affected pages would be nice, but the error is no longer occurring. Note: I just purged Māui Pōmare to confirm.
