TASK DESCRIPTIONYesterday I tried to enable Statement usage tracking on cawiki (which means we're exactly tracking which Statement has been used, and not just that "all entity data" is used). When doing this I discovered that many many usages on cawiki are needlessly added due to a performance bug in their Mòdul:Wikidata (https://ca.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=M%C3%B2dul_Discussi%C3%B3:Wikidata=18938979#Critical_performance_improvement).

The problematic code

		-- otherwise, iterate over all properties, fetch their labels and compare this to the given property name
		for k, v in pairs(entity.claims) do
			if mw.wikibase.label(k) == property then return v end
		end

can easily be replaced with

		property = mw.wikibase.resolvePropertyId(property)
		if not property then return end

		return entity.claims[property]

There is a problem with watchlists that show a large number of pages. Until it has been fixed Wikidata edits will not be shown in recent changes on Commons or Russian Wikipedia. Hi, There's been reports of high amounts of lag on commons causing read only mode, especially between 7:10-10:10 UTC today. After banging my head into this for a while…

It turns out that restoring the focus to the button that originally opened a modal is actually a feature of Bootstrap. And the way that Bootstrap does this (node_modules/bootstrap/js/modal.js, right at the end) is wrapped in so many event listeners that I can’t figure out a way for our own code to run after Bootstrap’s focus restorer, so there’s no good place for us to put some code that focuses the editor. It's going to be stable most of the time, but then (on big template/ module changes) it can very very quickly change a lot.
For cawiki: I've contacted them to fix the problem that caused this spike (https://ca.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=M%C3%B2dul_Discussi%C3%B3:Wikidata=18938979#Critical_performance_improvement), once that is fixed, we should be good to go ahead here.
In general, we will probably need to revisit T176273: Move the wbc_entity_usage table onto a dedicated DB shard here, especially for bigger wikis.


Can we also count the recentchanges rows from wikidata on day granularity before/after deployments? I guess whatever it cost increase the wbc_entity_usage in cawiki, it is probably acceptable if recentchanges is getting smaller.


We can only weigh these up to a certain amount, as a spike on one table does not usually mean an equal reduction of activity on the other. Small correction/clarification on "this was found to generate too much load" as an ops, I interpret load as throughput/backlog work. The insertion [load] itself was not the problem (the spikes on inserts were too large, but something that could be smoothed); the problem lies in the proportion of wb-originated changes vs. others and the size of the recentchanges table itself. Literally, issues could be solved by making the 2 million different query patterns of recentchanges better, but I am going to assume that is more difficult than changing the wb rows behaviour :-).

@jcrespo I fully agree to use create instead of altering tables. This has been part of the design all along, altering existing tables when introducing MCR was never the plan. We'll create new tables, copy information, and stop using some fields in the revision table. If we want, we can at some point drop these fields from the revision table. @eranroz I see no blocker, T151717#3675687 is only relevant for enabling per-property statement usage tracking, which has a separate feature switch. Avoiding X tracking when no statements are used, but only labels and/or sitelinks, would still be very helpful. There is potential for increasing the usage tracking table (because we may track L.de and L.en instead of just X), but I don't expect that increase to be explosive - and it should be offset by a dramatic reduction of inserts into recentchanges. I am confused about this issue is it fixed or is it still a problem? Is the task is "resolved" but the fix is not deployed yet?

I came to phabricator to report an issue I noticed today with "type constraint " d:Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/P1472 reports a constraint violation based on an item that is an instance of "newspaper", which is a subclass of "media company", which is a subclass of "organization", which is on a list of approved types for the constraint. TASK DESCRIPTIONOriginally, we inserted a recentchanges row for each local page affected by a change in a connected wikibase repo (e.g. if the label of Q159 was used on 1 pages, we inserted 1 rc rows when that label was changed). However, this was found to generate too much load (see e.g. T171027), so a hard cut-off was introduced as a quick fix, see https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/383384/

That situation is however not satisfactory. 1,  @hoo so how do we move forward with deployment to larger wikis/wikis with more wikidata usage such as cawiki? Do we have an issue with DB size? (e.g requires more thought on wbc_entity_usage design) or is it disabled in cawiki because it updated too fast? (so we just need to make the buildup slower?) I think most of the usages tracking are going to be static once it finish the first build-up?


Can we also count the recentchanges rows from wikidata on day granularity before/after deployments? I guess whatever it cost increase the wbc_entity_usage in cawiki, it is probably acceptable if recentchanges is getting smaller.

Huh, action="" should really only emit x-wiki for wikitext. The Content-Type header should come from ContentHandler, and should be application/json for JSON content. I wonder why this isn't the case here.

TASK DESCRIPTIONThere are some minor issues of much lower priority that we may want to address in the future like what Smalyshev pointed earlier, for example:


Splitter - dragging left moves it right and vise versa
Dropdown menus show left alignment (it may be valid for "tools", as tools have Latin names, and wrong for "help")
It may be more correct to have the arrow icon mirrored in RTL
X of the query helper should float left not right
Some RTL languages (Arabic, Persian) mirror the question mark for help. In others (Hebrew and probably Yiddish) the question mark is same as in LTR languages (e.g currently shows correct)

@cscott Yes, this needs a release, and a version bump in composer.json. Also, jsonld needs to be added to the default of the entityDataFormats setting in Wikibase.default.php (and possibly to production config). JSON-LD also need to be added to RdfWriterFactory. The code should be self-explanatory.

I can do the release, but you'll probably want to wait until the "tweak" patch is in. But I can't review it, I have no clue if it's doing the right thing. One additional comment is that if you kind of agree, in some cases, to do the "new table and copy" pattern rather than an alter. It is much easier to add or transform columns later, so no need to optimize in advance. NULLs in compact or above rows formats take 1 byte min, but only 1 bit is used for each nulled columns (e.g. a table with 7 null columns only takes 1 byte in total per row). Indexes not accounted.

If the tables were small and do not have a lot of activity (e.g. <20GB), alters are trivial. They become a huge burden if they are large an busy because we have to do the alters at the same time that queries are reading and writing from them, as in most cases we have to pool and depool every server. This is mostly true right now for revision, (maybe page and recentchanges), and image on commons.

Another thing that would cut a lot in time for alters is to integrate etcd into mediawiki. Ok, here is what I plan to do:


make sha1 field nullable. That way, we can easily stop writing it to preserve space, without the need for a schema change.
no page IDs in the content or slots tables. Since we won't use native MySQL partitioning, we can introduce the fields if and when we create the shards - or leave them out if we don't need them then.
I'll make slot_revision a bigint to avoid the need to alter the table when rev_id becomes a bigint.


But we'll do some benchmarking to see how that impacts join performance.
