as a comment, I believe that we also used to have a terminating chomp of trailing space as part of the lookahead function, and now the addition of a space is literal in lookahead.  If that is purposeful behaviour, okay; if it is not, then maybe it can be looked at again.

CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTION...Wikidata's search functionality, wbsearchentities, returns the proper JSON response given a search containing the aforementioned characters, but the results are not rendered properly at all. In particular, the warning "//The value passed for "search" contains invalid or non-normalized data. Textual data should be valid, NFC-normalized Unicode without C0 control characters other than HT (\t), LF (\n), and CR (\r).//" is attached to the results. This causes either 1) the waiting icon to remain indefinitely, if it is a new search query, or 2) the previous results to remain, if it is a modification to another search query. A screenshot of 1) is presented below.

To see 1) for yourself, you can change your interface language to Bengali, copy the text "বিষয়শ্রেণী:" ("Category:" in Bengali) and paste it into Wikidata's search box, and see no category pages pop up. Change the "য়" in that word to "য + ়", after removing the two spaces and the plus from that quotation, and such category pages will appear. Note that you don’t need to change your interface to Bengali to see these effects, and the fact that it is the Bengali keyword for “category” doesn’t seem to matter either. You can search for single characters and get the described behavior.

(Be sure to clear the search box between examples—otherwise you the old results, as @Mahir256 noted above.)

For Bengali and Devanagari characters, the precomposed versions hang, and the decomposed versions et suggestions:

Unless anyone objects, I'd like to start with reverting our emergency varnish max_connections changes from https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/386756 .  Since the end of the log above, connection counts have returned to normal, which is ~100, which is 1/10th the normal 1K limit that usually isn't a problem. My gut instinct remains what it was at the end of the log above.  I think something in the revert of wikidatawiki to wmf.4 fixed this.  And I think given the timing alignment of the Fix sorting of NullResults changes + the initial ORES->wikidata fatals makes those in particular a strong candidate. To me this looks like UTF-8 got read as if it was an 8 bit encoding (most probably ISO-8859-1), and then stored as UTF-8 again. If I do iconv -f UTF-8 -t ISO-8859-1 query.svg -o output.svg on the downloaded SVG, it's fixed.

Note this might be browser-depended. I also saw this code being the main reason for super-useless spam on users watchlists, because whenever a very high-level item gets edited on Wikidata, all child-items get a notification. In the specific example I have seen the user got hundreds of notifications about articles of artists he is watching, because someone edited something on the item "human" (yes, literally).

A short-term solution is to just remove this bad behaving maintenance code from the communities module. It really is nothing but this: maintenance. It does not influence the article (except for a hidden category).

Providing an alternative that allows the community to rewrite this code in a much more efficient way is an other thing we can do. It could be a literal isParent method that hard-codes the knowledge about what a "parent" is. Or it can be a getter that only returns the statements that are really needed (which I believe is exactly what we discuss in T166056 and https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/383990).
