A straight forward approach to this would be passing RevisionSlots (including inherited slots, after PST) to ContentHandler::getParserOutput. The relevant code is in WikiPage::prepareContentForEdit (resp. PageUpdater::prepareContentForEdit).

Note that there's plenty of other code that calls Content::getParserOutput().

With UUID the problem is it'd be very hard to test I'm afraid. However, we could just set prefix as genid{$shard}- instead of just genid and that should work I think.

Ah, I guess this is till a problem when joining dump file shards into a single file.

I would suggest going with another class named "CompactContext" or "SerializerableContext" which has two (more) public functions. "newFromContext" which tuns the context to smallest size possible and returns a new self and other method that turns the compact version into a Context implementation instance with dummy EntityContent (or something similar). For ApiComparePages, ApiEditPage, ApiStashEdit, and ApiParse, I need to figure out how exactly the API should accept being passed data for multiple slots to replace the existing text parameters. This will probably take the form of parameter-templates that turn into parameters based on the value of some other parameter.

One possibility is to have the template-parameters reference their parent parameter:

Some notes on other interactions:


ApiHelp would add a note about template parameters to the documentation.
ApiParamInfo would (regardless of whether these wind up being returned by getAllowedParams() or a new method) separate them out into a 'tempateparameters' array separate from the existing 'parameters' array.
ApiSandbox would add or remove fields as appropriate when the value of the named template-for parameter changes.
ApiStructureTest might make sure none of the template parameters result in collisions with other parameters for the module (template or non-template).

Something needs to change, because the way it's currently called gets "the" content handler, passes revision IDs without any indication of desired slots, and relies on DifferenceEngine to extract "the" Content object for each revision.

If the only change is that we get a content handler per slot and pass the slot role when creating each DifferenceEngine, that's fine, but it's still a change in the signature of ContentHandler::createDifferenceEngine() and DifferenceEngine::__construct().

And it should also be possible to specify multiple slots explicitly with text parameters.

That would be nice (for ApiParse as well as ApiComparePages), but I'm not sure it's really needed.

ApiParse doesn't actually use WikiPage::prepareContentForEdit(). I don't think it even can, since ApiParse would need to pass in ParserOptions and that method is designed for preparing a ParserOutput for canonical options.

The message is from the DecimalValue constructor, which is used in the QuantityValue constructor. This situation can happen when an edit is made via the API, and a quantity is submitted as a floating point number instead of a string. The code in the DecimalValue that converts floats to strings, but does this in a way so it can violate it's own limitations. Basically: The float is converted to a string with 100 decimal places. If the number before the decimal point is longer than 27 characters, the conversion fails with said error message.

This is very closely related to T155910: Erroneous digits in QuantityValue. Diffs will be slot-by-slot. For T174036 we need to figure out how in what order they should be shown, with what headings, where the code for composing the HTML should live, etc. None of that matters for API output. Most core API modules are simple enough, they just use the RevDel constants and Revision::userCanBitfield() which are easily enough replaced by the same constants and method on RevisionRecord.

ApiQueryRevisionsBase and its subclasses need a "slots" parameter, both to select which slots should have content-related metadata returned and to indicate that the existing, main-only content format should no longer be used. A new prop to list the available roles per revision is also useful.

For ApiComparePages, we need to first figure out T174036: Allow the diffs to show multiple slots [MCR].

For ApiEditPage and ApiStashEdit, we need to first figure out what editing looks like. See also T174033: Refactor EditPage to allow multiple slots to be edited atomically [MCR].

I can't think of any reasonable method of doing page views where that would make sense for any existing use of action="" Maybe a method that blindly concatenates them in alphabetical order by slot name?

Neither your proposal nor mine works with parsing the slots individually and returning separate HTML blobs for each one. Yours has another layer on top of parsing individual slots that somehow combines them all, while mine only directly parses the main slot and lets other slots either be transcluded or implicitly add themselves like Cite's automatic adding of references if no was present.

That's both "combining", the question is just what does the combining. But I'D only do any kind of combining if the slots param is not given.

Breaking change: a change to an API or data format that violates guarantees given or widely assumed before. Breaking changes include removal of API functions, parameters, or data fields and changes to the interpretation or format of parameters or data fields.

The policy requires an announcement two weeks in advance for breaking changes. One could argue whether it applies or not (it talks about www.wikidata.org APIs, which would not change), but that seems doable anyway; that means we should decide now which way to go and make the announcement (or not). I think how to handle legacy clients is a product decision so I'll kick this upwards. @DannyH asked for the breaking change option (or at least that's how I understood T184000#3953713) but maybe he or @Lydia_Pintscher wants to reconsider in light of the arguments brought up since.

To recap, we can either:

change the behavior of the API, to return the override when called the way clients call it currently (no extra parameters etc). That would automatically "upgrade" all clients out there to honor the override; if for some reason they rely on the description being specifically the same as the Wikidata description (e.g. because they allow editing and then write it back to Wikidata), they might break.
make the override a new "mode" of the API (that could be an opt-in behavior of the pageterm API that can be enabled by some extra parameter; or an extra field in the API output; or a new/different API module). That would mean all clients which want to honor the override need to be updated to use the API in the new way (see T184000#3954787 for a list of current clients); and then wait until end-users update their clients (for apps and other locally hosted software that can have a considerable long tail).

If we go with the first version, someone needs to decide whether we need to apply the timeline from the stable interface policy (at least two but preferably four weeks between announcement and deployment). That's a call for the Wikidata developer team I think.

@Addshore I guess the problem here is that what technically is a breaking change is also the requirement of this ticket: make existing clients receive the overwritten local description, without any change to the client. We cannot fulfill that requirement without a breaking change.

If changing client behavior is an option, my preferred approach would be to introduce a new API module that offers a short description and (to the outside) says nothing about where it comes from, and then have one implementation that uses wikidata, one that uses the magic word, and one that combines both using some kind of fallback logic. Although I still think the solution here is to improve the descriptions on Wikidata (and @daniel was spot-on here in his comments above), leaving that aside I have a question about the implementation. Hm… doing these redirect dumps separate from the current dumps will mean that the complete dumps might be inconsistent (as both aspects are dumped at separate times).

According to the API info, it looks like a pageterms API call is doing the correct thing, returning a Wikidata value. That probably shouldn't be broken. It appears the issue is the bits of code making the API calls. They are explicitly requesting Wikidata values.

It looks like the magic word description belongs under pageprops. However returning Wikidata descriptions though here would be just as wrong as returning the page description via the Wikidata API call.

It looks like the options are:

Abuse the Wikidata API call to return a value from either source;
Abuse the page properties to return a value from either source;
Have the calling code deal with both API calls;
Have a new API call somewhere that isn't explicitly tied to a source; or
Open a discussion on Meta and/or some of the other big wikis to consider the likely case that "silent" wikis have the same concerns and the same position as EnWiki. Then all calling code could be changed to use a pageprops API call.

1 and 2 are basically broken APIs. I hope we can veto broken APIs. 3 is gross, and should be scratched as well. Assuming I didn't miss anything, I think that pretty much leaves 4 or 5 as credible options. And in regard to #5, the fundamental reason for mess here is the plan to use one source for 50% of pageviews, and use a second source for the other 50%.
